Your videos helped me get my start in photography.I discovered your channel through a friend in highschool, now I’m married and a full time professional photographer. My husband and I are pursuing missions full time starting this year and I’ll continue shooting abroad and state side. Thank you for sharing your journey. It changed my life man ❤
What do you mean by missions?
@@papaelf_her dreams…passion, or path.
@@Mineasu Oh, I Thought they meant Christian Missions...
@@papaelf_ That's what is called jumping to a huge conclusion.
yeah,i from china ,now I'am learing making video.but,.i have some problems for my future, because i will come in
social now😅
Peter - watching your growth as an artist is so so inspiring. Thank you for sharing your journey for all of us.
“A man named Don.” Not a Native American or Indian - but a man. As a fellow Native, I appreciate that. 🙏🏼
The photos, amazing, expect nothing less from Peter. But Don's explanation of the valley with the sand was mind-blowing.
1000%
I love how peter has evolved over the years as a photographer and content creator, it makes me proud.
OMG, epic video, great storytelling Pete, and that sharing of how the caves are formed by Don was 🤯. Thanks for “Making Photos” and inviting us on the journey!
Peter you're not just a photographer, or a filmmaker, or a brand even, you're a whole movement man! Reading all these comments about how you inspired people to go into this field is so relatable, I started watching your videos before I even bought my camera. If in 10 years I do 20% of what you did I'm a happy man!
From your bedroom studio to film photography, it's the positive vibe that you give your viewers that made us watch and rewatch your videos.
Your videos are my "anti-burn out" activity from being a developer. So thank you for being an inspiration. 🙏🏽
The story telling, music, clips, color grading, photos etc = magic. Crispy photos!
Pete talks about photography in such a beautiful, pure way. I'm sure everyone who listens can feel it
100%
It's just absolute passion and genuine love and care for the craft
I love everything about this video! As being Navajo, Diné photographer it’s amazing seeing Peter come to where we’re from and taking photos of where our grandparents played in the canyons and him embracing the Navajo culture of where we’re from and seeing the Navajo people representing in this video in an amazing way us something I love. I have also watched Peter for a long time and have to thank him for starting my photography and thank you for representing Navajo people it means so much to me personally ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Same the headdress was a little much but I get it.
Was really interested to hear indigenous perspectives on this! Wondered what your thoughts were on the use of the war bonnet? I wrote an essay last term about indigenous representation in photography through history so began to question the motive behind Peter's work (not necessarily negatively!) But just thinking how the western projection and ideologies might be present here, constructing an image that has been made many times before- would love to know your thoughts if you had any!
Uh he flew down to again have a savior complex and exploit and promoted western narratives or First Nations people. It’s exploitive tourism cloaked as some sort of life long passion project. It would better for him to do a deep dive into his own demons and put them on display if he wants to share something.
@anyawilding I think there are many people not in touch with their culture and don't see an issue with this but when you really know about the ugly history and how our ancestors and many of our brothers and sisters are still treated you will see this in a new way.
It really blows my mind that there are some people in the film community that are genuinely mad that you've gotten into film photography at all. it's cool to see a creator so many of us look up to learn how this film stuff works right along with us.
awesome video, man!
yes!! i got my start in film right at the cusp of when the pros were going all digital. and i miss film. there def still a niche community out there keeping it alive
This has to be one of the nicest videos of yours till date. It became great because u narrated it from the depth of your heart and I still feel photography will never die❤️
I enjoyed seeing my culture being represented not only in your video, but that it will be a part of your photobook. I've enjoyed your videography and photography for years, and have enjoyed your ongoing growing passion for the art.
Im applauding alone in my house for this men. So inspiring so beautiful. Thank you Peter.
My man Peter did it again! Tears man...
I've been following you for the better part of the past 10 years, and although I love all your content, there is something about these short docs you do that just captivate me and touch my soul in a different way. I would pay to watch this on the big screen!
Thanks for inspiring me, and so many others over the past years
💟
Just how one guy can enlighten the passion of millions of people around the world with just a video. The way he creates, puts everything it takes for each video. Thanks pete, truly.
I love that you have brought indigenous people in. respecting the land and culture💜
Genuinely teared up a little at the photos of Don and Mrs Don? Beautiful and profound images that truly make you really feel something, I’m starting my Sunday feeling inspired and grateful, thanks Peter 😊
Glad you got to visit my Ancestral Pueblo / Hopi homelands. Theres so much of our history in the Four Corners. Love your photos!
Peter ... you captured the ethos of the American West in these photos. The vastness that defies "near" and "far," the "emptiness" of a land teeming with life, the merge between heavens and earth, and the dignity and pride of its earliest peoples. As a 7th generation daughter of said West, you touched my soul. Your fluency in gear, switching between film, digital, still, video ... epic. Thank you, for all you do.
NPC
As a true descendant, you would know that this depiction is overused and tiresome. You’re probably a colonized descendant (if you are truly a descendant)
I wrote I am a descendant of the "American West"; you are reading something else into that. Sorry you feel the legacy and tradition of a people is "overused" and "tiresome" for being depicted in a manner they feel honors their present as well as their past. Why would you also want to cut them off from how they choose to portray, and then share, their images? Somehow I doubt Peter forced them into posing, let alone selected the manner of dress. @@HAlariousInc
@@phillipbanes5484 Never said there was an issue with being a colonized descendant. It’s obvious that colonization will always exist.
I simply state it as a way of understanding this situation. From a colonized descendant perspective, this is non-issue and can be seen as a celebration of the history and culture. However in this instance, Peter McKinnon, a person who has no genuine ties to the culture, shapes his vision to represent the extensive culture and rich history of it. This, of course, is acceptable…but its the way he goes about it that’s wrong.
McKinnon, who has a very large following, has a responsibility to express a fair understanding and demonstration of the culture and not perpetuate common tropes often associated with it. Biggest red flag is the headdress…like this is it? This is the only story you can tell? What about the actual truth? The hardships of reality? Not just glorifying indigenous culture that stemmed from ideas that have been rooted by colonizers from the early days of media? You don’t just put someone in a headdress so you can get your instagram photos and make a youtube documentary
I loved how you used multiple cameras and formats at various focal lengths to document your journey and tell such a heartfelt story, thanks for continuously inspiring us all. Absolute legend.
Just one word. Beautiful. The photographs, the storytelling, the visuals , the sound design everything. Just beautiful.
oh my God the shot of him on the horse is perfection ❤❤❤
Peter, your new southwestern style is on point! Well done, dude. I work in the film industry here in New Mexico and two years ago I finally made my way into the camera union! I was a portrait photographer for over 20 years, like you shooting weddings on film and learning what it was like to run a photography studio from my parents. My mom started her studio in 1980! However, with the advancement in digital I started to see that perhaps having a studio like my parents wasn't going to be an option to withstand a career so in 2014 I closed the studio and headed west to New Mexico. I found my way into the film industry as a PA and worked my way into CAMERA. Local 600 ICG and I am proud member. You have inspired me since 2019 and during covid your photo challenges were so fun to keep me creating. I love image making! I love people!! Several years ago, I too got back into shooting film! It is humbling to say the least. :) Keep being you and rocking those cool sweaters! Come to New. Mexico sometime. :)
Lots of people are mad because you're now shooting on film, but I truly appreciate the time you take to explain the love that you have for photography through film. The voice that you have to express your feelings for this craft is something that I admire and want more people to feel it too! thanks Peter for always bringing back this love and pure feeling for something that lots of us took as work, but should be seen more as an art and oportunity to let our souls speak
Love your videos back in the day, and today even more!
Usar film fotográfico, no es por lo que más están enojados con PM en estos momentos y con este video...
Photographs are immortal.
What you are doing peter is so valuable that you dont even know how many people you are inspiring.
I've been with your story from the beginning when i was in my college.
Your influence in my life is priceless. No course can give me what you gave me. Thank you again, for sharing your story in your own way.
That itself gave me so much.
Amazing video! So wonderful to see the Navajo people and their Nation getting showcased. Such beautiful people! It is always a joy to spend time out there with them when I get to go a couple times of year with my church. This video brought tears to my eyes and joy in my heart.
Photographer?!? Filmmaker!?!? CZcamsr?!?… Yes all of those. But to me you’re simply just the best storyteller there is. Thank you 🙏🏻
Sure, but you need to watch life of riza too
Agreed
My entire photography career was built in the Utah/AZ desert. It’s where I grew up and where I find the most inspiration from. So it’s really cool and surreal watching this video, combining my favorite places on earth to photograph, and the photographer that inspired me the most when I first started. So awesome you were able to make to this special part of the world.
Peter, you don’t know how much of an impact you’ve made in my life. It got me into photography. I’ve been watching you for some years now. And every video is like a learning curve. I’m so grateful that you exist. Thankyou❤
Pete, congrats on this video, my man. I've been following your content since the start of my photography journey, about 7 years ago. For the first time a youtube video gave me chills. I've been in the process of reworking my approach to photography after a bad burnout, and this is exactly the inspiration I needed. Thank you Pete.
Gah damn this pumps me up!! ♥️♥️♥️
Well, this was refreshing. I feel like you just contributed to the film photography industry by encouraging all your fans to start this journey. Thanks Pete. Also, true. Doing film photography just hits different and feels so good. Also, you then get to say you DID make those photos yourself and not a camera lol. Cheers mate!
Was fascinating to watch! I’m sure it was worth the 20year dream! 📸🎞️
Thanks for showcasing Arizona and the wonders of the Navajo people who reside here.
I was so excited to see this after your teaser yesterday. Thanks so much for sharing and continuing to inspire us day after day Pete!
This is one of the most soulful projects you've created this far! Stay in tuned Pete ❤
Pete, I could literally watch your videos everyday. They are so inspirational and truly make me want to push the boundaries of my own photography adventures. Thank you so much for your passion for truly chasing our dreams.
I’ve been a subscriber since forever but truly I am now appreciating your work and videos now more than ever. I think your videos were the cutting edge fast paced to me back in the day but now in the world of short attention spans you allow your movies to breathe. I appreciate that a lot.
Incredible man, can't wait for that book, Peter! Thanks for inspiration and for challenging so many of us on pushing your creative boundaries!
Pete has totally changed his film style . It's so awesome
You’ve done something so special here. These photos are iconic and so incredibly beautiful. The level of inspiration is mind-blowing.
These are my favorite photos you have ever captured!! I am looking forward to see the one of Don looking extremely strong and proud on the horse in print then the book comes out! Amazing stuff!
I've been thinking about Photography books myself recently, especially as I've been reinvigorated to continue, or more like, pick back up my photography journey. I think that's an important point that you have been on without saying it (at least, I don't think you've specifically said it that way), you've been on the JOURNEY of photography. It is a journey that we all can take if we so choose, and choosing to do so is profound.
Thanks Pete, and Capt Kirk. It was moving.
thank you pete for inspiring a depressed 15yo kid back in 2018 to be out there. and for the last five years what I realized is, photography goes beyond than what one might initially think. for me, it's story telling and we are story tellers.
One of my fellow Marines took his life the other day. I dont know why this comes full circle, but your video has reminded me to embrace the beauty of life, and the simple things, as hard is it may seem. Rest easy, Rob. We love you, brother.
That Don fella is amazing! Watching him tell the story, pointing out the eye and beak, making the sand into sculptures.....
I've spent the last year completely rutted-out, not really interested in picking up my camera, "meh, I've got my phone with me..." has been the attitude.
You are, and have been, a HUGE inspiration to me and many others. Thank You Peter.
Pete you are so inspiring for us smaller creators ... honestly have such a huge impact on my life... Thank you for Sharing Man !
I can't wait to see that book when it's published - Just the captures of don and the woman in Monument valley made me feel something so deeply that I'm confident the whole book is going to impact a lot of people in really profound ways. You're crushing it, man. Thanks for sharing your art and thoughts with the world.
Thanks Peter for ALL that you do. You inspire me on all levels. Keep doing what you're doing. 👊
Next level photography! As someone who grew up with film, there is something very different about shooting film. You need to know what you are doing. There are no redo's. We didn't shoot 10 photos because it was too expensive. We never really knew what we had until it was developed. Sometimes exciting, sometimes disappointing. Film is definitely highlighting your skills! Thanks for sharing the journey.
It was - and still is - magic that happens in that developing tray, teasing out an image from a blank sheet and light, in front of your eyes.
Wow, Peter, 'The Valley' is an absolute masterpiece. The emotional depth and storytelling are awe-inspiring. Your passion for your craft shines through every frame, and the vision you've shared has left a lasting impact. The emotional grab this piece induced is truly unparalleled; it's as if you've reached into the very core of the viewer's soul. Thank you for pouring your heart into this and sharing it with us. Keep up the incredible work!
This project is cringe and this comment has somehow out-cringed it.
Nobody had ill intent. It’s about all of us getting educated through the process without hate. So please rethink your approach. Lead with respect and kindness.
Ah, it seems we have a seasoned veteran of the internet with a 12-year account and a grand total of zero contributions. Would you like some goats to accompany your trolling efforts? They're known for their ability to climb great heights, much like your talent for observing the creative and inspirational work of others without adding any value of your own. Perhaps in the future, you might consider adopting Thumper's philosophy: 'If you can't say something nice, don't say nothing at all.' Cheers!@@TheShelbinator3000
@@brainmt Do you all just like to speak in generic platitudes? "It’s about all of us getting educated through the process without hate." Listen to yourself -- you're not saying anything at all. Lack of critical thinking in this entire comment section about how this project is lazy and self-servicing.
All of us that are watching these videos…Sorry to ruffle your cancel culture feathers. Glad you provided so much info to help the indigenous people.
Dude, I love this! By far the best you’ve done! You show so much heart for the craft! You don’t just make photos Pete you make energy and emotion to go with them!
Peter, I've been watching your videos for as long as I can remember. It's amazing to see how your style evolved and eventually came to this. Watching this video leaves me inspired and emotional. Keep up the work, we all love this
I’m glad you used actual indigenous peoples for your photo shoot 👏🏾👏🏾 Also finding someone who can teach you about the lands is even more important.
It’s neat to see you push yourself also to try something new.
Much better than having a paleface cowboy there
Pete I at times feel like the closest thing to my own blood is the water of the Colorado River. You continue to run a thread, that is so parallel to my life. Even getting fired from SF. to waking up your passion in photography when you first clicked that macro shot. Anyway, you amaze me once again as you head to a place that is sacred to me, for lack of a better word. That area you flew over of Powell, if you could rewind that scene back to 92 you'd see a small, happy child exploring the shores of Powell literally just near where you flew over, building a rock path on an island at the base of two very defined and well known caves in the area. about 6 years ago I went back on our annual trip and was blown away when we discovered portions of the trail still in tact. This year however, that section was well above the water line, you most likely flew over it on your approach to Page from the West side of Powell and would never notice it. But I often think back to that moment, not even 10 years old and was already obsessed with creating. I'd love to work with you some day if ever given the opportunity. I live in OC and often collaborate with another CZcamsr Jeven Dovey. I love seeing your success, been here since 100k and those cheesy balloons.
Pete, this photos brought tears to my eyes man. Thank you for inspiring so many people. There's something special about you.
I loved seeing you unlock a new perspective through photography and keeping it as a journey, never arriving. Keep going with this dude..could feel your heart in your words. Cheers
A very different Peter McKinnon video than we're used to seeing. Quite possibly the best one you've ever made.
Such a great video Pete! I was there at the end of July and were able to get some bangers but it is fun to see this awesome film so recently after my trip! Hats off to you and Captain Kirk for this masterpiece! It was sooo great to watch and fun to see the bangers that you were able to get along the way!! It is such a beautiful landscape and it deserves great story telling!! Keep up the great work!! And come visit Utah more often!!
Huge respect to YOU and MATTI, I have learn so much from both of you. From photography to friendship to videography and lot more. You are the one of key for motivated myself for living my life. Love from bottom of my heart ❤️❤️.
Your evolution in photography is so contagious and inspiring to many of us. I started my career as a photographer know nothing and most of the things I learned from your CZcams in the early days.
And following you along the journey has definitely helped me to constantly rethink and challenge myself to evolve in my creative approaches.
Thank you for creating this amazing piece that has and will inspire many of us out there.
Pete being as real as it gets. Love the new goals!
😂
Tengo años siguiéndote y siendo admirador, pero en estos últimos dos años he visto la evolución y madurez a la que haz llegado y es fascinante, respeto.
Absolutely love your docu-style videos. Seeing the story of how you create photos from start to finish is a pleasure to watch. The way you've captured the emotion of the journey in both this film and The Bucket Shot is incredible. I have a few bucket shots myself I'd like to capture and hope one day that I can not only get the photo, but the journey along with it.
I used to do photography a few years ago but along the way that took a backseat for my passion in music. But I've been watching your channel for some years now and the more I do the more I feel that little inner photography flame in me quietly flickering...growing again. Your videos just might be the reason I pick up a camera again Pete! Your passion for the art is infectious. Keep up the great work.
I’m an IATSE member who left the Navajo reservation to work in the film industry. Monument Valley is on the Navajo Reservation and the headdress and clothing isn’t and was never apart of Navajo culture. I don’t know if this is an actor or background person flown out for this photo shoot. It’s an inaccurate portrayal of the local Navajo indigenous people; stereotypical to how john ford portrayed natives in films.
He literally said the outfit was an antique. There was nothing said about culture
Thank you for this comment.
Yeah. I don’t blame anyone for making money - but the cultural sensitivity isn’t there. Do better Peter.
@@phillipbanes5484I'm a proud conservative and I agree people are too sensitive these days. But only a really ignorant person would think that means there shouldn't be any sensitivity at all. Native Americans have been shat on by the film industry for like a hundred years there's nothing wrong with this guy speaking up and asking for an accurate representation of his people. He was totally reasonable with what he said So instead of whining about how people whine too much try to show a little respect
@@mjmartinejohnwhat the hell are you talking about. He did a whole mini documentary featuring the Navajo nation and the things which are culturally important to them. Yet he makes one wrong choice and he's "culturally insensitive". Don't be such a little brat. We all need small improvements
Lots of love from Pakistan 🇵🇰
Anyone who collaborates with Indigenous people in a good way is FIRE... Love this one.
I can’t even put into words how incredibly inspiring your videos are for new photographers (me). They truly open doors and churn my inner artistic soul that I thought I lost years ago. Please keep making these cinematic masterpieces so all of the viewers are inspired and push the limits of their creativity. Thank you.
I've started learning how to take photos when I stumbled on your CZcams, back in 2018. I've learnt so much from you and Matti Haapoja. And now I've recently been on a film as a B cam operator. Everything I've learnt are from you. And just wanted to say how much you and your vids have impacted my life. I also love how you are bringing lite to my people. As an Native American person who is living in Australia I love seeing this. Thank you.
Hey Pete, I was a struggling photographer who couldn’t land a gig to save my life and your first video that blew up on CZcams changed my photography career path for the better, now I do it full time and travel for my job! Thanks to your inspiration otherwise I’d have given up.
I love passion. Your passion has always been inspiring. Please continue to chase your passion through your journey. Cheers!
Thanks for all you've done to help me and inspire me on my storytelling journey. Seriously couldn't have done it without your videos. I never knew how much I could do until you encouraged me to take the first step. This one really took me back. The last half of it especially. Thanks again man. Keep up the good work
I feel that you put a part of your soul into this video, my wife was watching it, reading subtitles(she doesn’t speak English) and she was impressed as well!
Wish you the best! Happy to see how you are getting to the new tops!!!❤
Love that you are capturing this and the older generation. I bet you felt in awe the entire time!
Often I go through periods of being on CZcams for work rather than enjoyment so my feed fills up with the same stuff that I become burnt out on but when a video like this comes along, it takes me back to watching stuff for fun and enjoyment and is a great break from it all.
Thank you.
This video Pete…. Omg! This has brought me to tears! It’s your incredible passion for this craft is totally inspiring ❤️ thank you for making my day after watching this ❤
I’ve been shooting film since 2019 and I wonder why I keep going back to it. I love how you talked about it at the end, it connects you to the craft. I told me wife just yesterday, it just feels like you’re making art as opposed to just taking photos. I love it.
Seeing the passion you have is very inspiring, thanks for always being there.
"Make the photo" such beautiful advice and amazing video. Love what you're doing with your content now
Very well done! This is what I needed to see today! I’ve been isolated and becoming more and more cabin feverish as I fight off catching covid earlier this week, and this video has inspired me to get out of my digital routine I’ve been stuck in for years and start using those film cameras sitting on my shelf for “decoration”! Thank you Peter for sharing this with the world!
This is beautiful, Peter! Thank you for what you do.
True words Peter!! And fantastic shots, there is definitely still something to be said about taking photos of a moment that can never be gotten back and how it’s in a way better that setting up a whole shoot. The spontaneity of snapping a moment is something very special that you cant get in making photos.
Beautiful people in a beautiful Land....Thanks Peter.
Amazing as always Pete. You are truly an inspiration to many! Keep coming at us with these bangers!
Man, you have always been an inspiration from the way I first started getting back into photography. It has helped drive me to want to pursue the ever-evolving aspects of shooting the animals (snakes) we own. Thank you, Pete, and congrats on a 20-year milestone.
Just so beautiful....the choice of music with the fantastic shots is a match made in heaven.
This was awesome. Thanks for sharing Peter!! I love seeing your journey. It inspires me! I’ve been taking more photos recently. And working on videos!
Dude, your way to talk and express yourself is so mermerizing ! You give so much motivation for many photographers/videographers !
Such an amazing video! Thank you for taking us along on your journey.
Geeze, dude...everything about this vid gave me goosebumps. Can't hype up all your mini docs more. Every time I watch one I get a million ideas of my own.
It's crazy to think that this is an amalgamation (I think that's your favorite word lol) of vlogging and filmmaking combined. It's not something I've witnessed. It felt like a short film, but also a vlog, but then, something else I can't describe that is absolutely divine. I'm surprised I started to watch your videos later in my photography journey. I wonder where life will take us.
This was a MASTERPIECE, Peter. So perfectly filmed, told and assembled. Well done and thanks for always inspiring so many of us!
Had a smile on my face watching this whole video, thanks so much Peter. Absolutely beautiful.
I discovered your channel in 2020 and I’ve been here since. When I first came across your videos, what continually struck me was the enthusiasm and charisma you demonstrated in your craft. It was as if you photography was embedded in your DNA. This made my desire for photography/filmmaking to spiral high. You’ve truly been an inspiration. Cheers to more achievements. Thank you Pete🙏🏽 Shout out to SquareSpace for believing in you too.
This is by far my favourite video, no STORY, from you! I live in AZ and have had the opportunity to visit all these same places, they are breathtaking and I'm so glad you got to experience them! I encourage anyone who can to visit these places, it's an emotional experience.
Seeing you find such passion and inspiration in Film photography, and you can see how much you've learned and captured in such a way it resonate to us viewers. As a indigenous fan from Gitxsan nation, you have captured such raw beauty of Don & the backdrop. Colors is amazing! Well done Peter, bravo!
What a guy. Thank you for always being you and inspiring us Pete. God bless!
