- Overnight wild camping trip with an amazing cloud inversion among the highest mountain peaks in Scotland.
Cloud, or temperature inversions in Scotland are a thick layer of mist clinging to the ground. If you are lucky enough to be standing on a hill when this happens you can be treated to incredible vista of a sea of cloud, with island-like mountain tops rising out from the mist.
On this trip I was also lucky enough to see my first ever Brocken Spectre which was named after the German mountain on which it was first noted.
When an observer stands on a hill which is partially enveloped in mist and in such a position that their shadow is thrown on to the mist, they may get the illusion that the shadow is a person seen dimly through the mist.
The illusion is that this person or 'spectre' is gigantic and at a considerable distance away from them.

Absolutely stunning 😍 what an experience & grand company.
Hubby & I headed to Kingussie for a few days to catch some munroes but.. when the forecast 22c turned out to be 28.5c.. we ditched due to lack of water sources and instead spent a very fine & relaxing few days hiking to a parasol in a beer garden for a cold one and swimming in the Spey.

Wow, perfect conditions. I watched Murray’s video but only just seen yours. You can’t beat a good temperature inversion ( to use the correct term), especially when surrounding peaks are visible like that. Fantastic. 👍

Fantastic inversion Ray. Got fantastic footage there. Stob Binnein was my first hike after lockdown. My thighs and calfs were burning for a a day or two afterwards lol.

I have only seen it that good on Snowdon and once on Ben Nevis it was nearly a full inversion

Wow,.. stunning conditions - my fave weather. Its like being on top of the World. I love a Brocken Spectre, amazed that's your 1st considering you live up the hills Ray. The footage of you both being enveloped by the cloud around 10 mins.. love that. I remember seeing a video of someone camping on Suilven and waking up to similar conditions...
