      …then again if you don’t soak and thoroughly rinse things like rice you can ingest an apparently cancer-causing fungus or something over time?! And legumes like peas, lentils, and beans have an “anti nutrient” coating which is why you should apparently take the time to soak&rinse those for hours…

Yet at five it was clear I am allergic to perfume and after my rabbit died I became allergic to grass. I was 13-14 years old and had never reacted before. Yet the summer after my rabbit had died I developed a pretty bad allergy to grass.

    Two theories: 1. We'vr always had these conditions, but we were so busy with all the other parts of not dying before the advent of modern medicine that things like asthma were simply ignored. 2. As we have improved hygiene, our immune systems have slacked off, evolutionarily speaking. 3. Our immune systems have gotten bored with the lack of compelling enemies and have started taking pot shots at our own bodies (I.E. energy that our bodies would normally devote to keeping the parasite at bay is now being turned on the body; with no obvious threats, the immune system is now tackling anything it sees as foreign.

    Something that's always crossed my mind is the fact that we have so many 'anti-bacterial' products such as hand sanitizer and sprays that 'kills' 99.9% of bacteria on surfaces and/or hands, which exempts our bodies from actually 'learning' everyday about new and improved viruses/bacteria and halts our immune system from building stronger antibodies each day (which i logically assume, weaken our immune system beyond the capabilities for self immunization against developing more powerful and efficient defences) I wonder, where would humanity end up with constant and/or abusive anti-bacterial product usage?

  • @thejarofrice
    @thejarofrice Před 6 lety +4

    Kinda wish they touched on the IgE antibody and how it is pretty specific to helminths. If the IgE antibody is not activated by a helminth, it leaves IgE to be activated by an allergen.
    My parents had worms (idk what kind) when they were young. No allergies their entire life. But then my father developed serious allergies (mostly pollen) after about 15 years living in the U.S. Then my brother and I were born. We both had asthma, but my brother grew out of it and is now as healthy as can be. Unfortunately, I had eczema, and later developed psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. All my cousins in the states have had asthma or eczema (or both) in their youth. My cousins in the Philippines have no such worries.

    I might need someone more informed than me to help:
    How exactly was the connection made between having worms and the hygiene hypothesis? My impression was that the worms themselves would try to prevent inflammation by producing compounds that protect themselves from being discovered as a foreign organism. That would mean that worms and not humans were the ones that evolved to keep the parasitic relationship working, the worms that produced anti-inflammatory compounds survived and the ones that didn't died because of the reaction of the hosts immune system.
    References are welcome

  • @bigghoss762
    @bigghoss762 Před 6 lety +4

    It makes sense. The parasites would evolve to prevent the immune system from attacking them and eventually even take it a step further and start helping the host. If it becomes a sybiotic relationship rather than just parasitic the host would not try to get rid of the worms and even go as far as to seek out the worms to gain the benefits from having them.

    It sounds less like our bodies evolved to be somewhat symbiotic with worms, than our bodies evolved to *compensate* for the presence of worms, so that they could still function, hence the warning at the end. Kind of like how the body becomes less susceptible to the intoxicating effects of drugs or the lethality of poisons by compensating for their presence when they're introduced consistently & with non-lethal doses. Taking small amounts of poisons to get high might've stopped an assassin, but that sure as hell doesn't make intentionally ingesting toxins a good idea. It's just that in this case, our bodies are so used to being screwed over by parasitic worms that, with our cleanliness, the natural selective processes have turned into cases of overcorrection.

    Four things should be considered before drawing these conclusions with stats.
    A. areas with less access to healthcare and proper facilities which have higher parasite exposure.. *Probably have lower quality healthcare.* I.E. less cases of asthma are diagnosed because of improper diagnosis. Less equipment coupled with underpaid/overworked/under-educated medical specialists means less accurate diagnosis, and less patients making it to the doctor at all to BE diagnosed. These parasites are often easier to diagnose, because samples can be sent off to a lab and tested en masse, while asthma patients require an extensive diagnosis by a specialist using expensive equipment and treatment. I can imagine a stressed healthcare system prioritizing the much more common and present danger of parasitic organisms which can easily be prevented over asthma, which is less common, and a lifelong condition.
    B. these areas have worse education. Plain and simple. When someone has breathing problems, they may not think 'Oh no, better go to the doctor,' or even 'Oh no, I have asthma.' They may think 'Oh no, I have a spiritual problem which needs mending' or, 'Whelp, better keep this to myself and tough it out.' It is a hard and uncomfortable reality, but look no further than the easily avoidable 2014 West African Ebola epidemic to see how spiritual beliefs and superstition exacerbated it from a few isolated cases to almost a country-wide pandemic.
    C. people with asthma in these places may *die from an asthma attack before they are diagnosed.* This plays into A and B, because well, if you can't get someone with severe asthma the treatment they need, misunderstand their issues and don't seek treatment, or the doctor simply doesn't render the right care.. Especially in such a stressful and dangerous environment? *They're going to die.* And likely die without being properly diagnosed and added to that statistic. We've seen a similar thing with cancer statistics, but in reverse. More people than ever before being diagnosed with cancers in developed countries, at least in part *because the technology to diagnose and understand it has improved drastically.* Now, about the statistics.
    This isn't even to touch on geopolitical problems like corruption or lack of funding which may skew these statistics. Maybe reporting higher numbers of parasite outbreaks than observed earns more donations and funding? When we use these statistics to draw conclusions, we should also discuss the accuracy and possible lack thereof, and other factors which may set these demographics apart.

    We breed clean green bottle flies when we want to use their grubs (their larvae) to clean out necrotic tissue (grubs eat necrotic tissue, and some differentiate between dead tissue and living tissue).
    So, similarly, we might want to breed clean healthy tapeworms so that we know what's infecting our guts, rather than depending on natural infection to sort things out on its own.
    Of course, before we do that we may want to nail down what parasites are doing what for us.
