  • This Critique discussed the very controversial film Beloved. Starring Oprah Winfrey and Danny Glover, Mercedez charmingly gives insight into this notoriously confusing plot.

I couldn’t get through this as a child and in my early 20s but at 31 I was able to watch it and understand 50% of it

The 'H' in Thandie Newton's name is silent (so its pronounced 'Tandy' like candy). The 'the' at the end of Sethe is pronounced like 'tha' like the end of Martha "Seth-tha", and Jonathan Demme's last name is pronounced like "Dem-mee" .

Great review. Well done. It is a weird movie, just watched it, but I think it’s kinda symbolic. Like you say, guilt and the mindset of a slave or ex slave. This movie is certainly one to think about. I guess I’ll have to read the book.

I do love this movie but I've always wondered about the beginning when the boys ran out of the house who were they never understood that

  • @alysiamerdavid-wasser9165

RIP Toni Morrison. idk why this woman, Mercedes, is calling Sethe, "SETH", if she just watched it, but it IS "Setha".

I was looking for commentary to share hopefully by one of our people but this commentary... Smh.... you missed out so much that was necessary to go into and got it all incredibly wrong! Did you not rewatch the movie before shooting this l, at least? How about reading the book to get more insight.🤦🏽‍♀️
It would do Toni Morrison and the director proper well deserved respect by redoing this commentary and actually putting some work in it.

Pretty much this movie is like the conjuring before the conjuring It is a very weird movie very long movie sometimes boring movie but the boring parts is going to get you to know what's going on how beloved went from a spirit into flesh, your average person is not going to watch this movie that long because they going to get lost and with the boringness they lose interest but this is a sick film very sick definitely a horror flick...

That was not her husband it was a friend from the plantation. Her husband was their father who was left behind most likely dead.

And Beloved was a demon more so then a ghost. Ghost can only appear and disappear and then move stuff and come in your dreams, however, a more sinister poltergeist like Beloved came into the home and causes turmoil, grief and depression. Meaning she never existed to begin with but more so as a reminder to her mother for the guilt she held near for what she did. The reason why she disappeared at the end was because of the payers the women bestowed upon the house in that scene. The true soul and spirit of that baby was already gone. It long sense passed. Which is why Beloved was completely gone at the end. So I guess the child towards the beginning was sent back to her mother as a you g grown women, rather than a baby. I’m the movie they made it look like her throat heals in her coffin and she finds her way out back to her mothers home. If you think this one is creepy or confusing it’s because that’s exactly how it feels when you allow a demon to your home first they are familiar and make you feel happy if long forgotten loved one and then they become the nightmare. Causing you pain, turmoil and grief.

The women who came out to pray on them knew that something was wrong and figured that prayer would cast it out. By then it did. Leaving nothing behind but a memory. She was now no longer there to cause more pain. I feel like Oprah portrayed the character of a mother who never wanted to do what she did but was left with no choice. Made a decision for her daughter before she was old enough to make the decision for herself.
