  • Toni Morrison is one of the great American novelists, period. In this video, I break down my thoughts of her powerful novel; its not so impressive film adaptation starring Oprah Winfrey, Danny Glover, Kimberly Elise, and Thandie Newton; and what Beloved still has to teach us about our current society.

I believe Toni Morrison’s Beloved was inspired by a enslaved woman named Margaret Gaines. I want to do more research since I’m from Cincinnati and her story of running away from a plantation in northern Kentucky and making it to Cincinnati and that’s when she was desperate to save her children from going back to slavery. Thanks for sharing.

@@kiajohnson Her last name I accidentally used intertwined, but it is hard to tract everything with our history because of the uncertainty our ancestors went through and the masters or married name that was taken on, but I believe Garner was the last last name she had. Thanks.

Thank you for sharing this with us, I have a question please, based on your reading.. is there any postcolonial counter discourse in Beloved, against the colonial hegemonic discourse?

Thanks for your comment! I'm not 100% sure how to answer since I haven't taken a postcolonial class before, but the book is primary from an anti-colonial hegemonic perspective. Its focus is on the humanity and traumas of the oppressed Black population of the South.

I appreciate that comment. I'll work on being louder in future videos. I had very thin walls at the time of this recording :)
