They could learn a thing or two from deep rock galactic. It got a perk that allow to tame a grunt beetle for combat and they can be pet with an animation as a response.
And they react a lot like a mix of dogs or cats.
In game Necromunda Hired Gun,, a Warhammer 40k shooter, when the game was advertised with having a dog companion, like the first question in official FAQ was "Is the dog petable?'.
At this point of time its propadlly not legal to put a dog or cat or fox or whatever petable thing they put there and not making it petable.

I would absolutely be that game designer who wouldn't even consider that anyone would voluntarily pet one of these annoying, barking, stinking canines.
Some are worse when they add them, make them not aggressive and you have to hunt them to complete quests... it's one of the reasons why some of my games where never finished...

Yes! I have actually played games where, if you're standing around idle, dogs and cats will actually come over to you and look up expectantly, or even roll around in front of you, exposing their bellies, but _YOU STILL CAN NOT PET THEM!_

I just played through the demo for The Pale Beyond, which has not one, but _three_ buttons to let you pet the sled dogs! And it's not just the same "you pet the dog" every time. Sometimes you scratch his ears, sometimes you pat its head, sometimes _he offers you his paw._ Truly a masterpiece of modern gaming.

In OSRS you can pet dogs and stray dogs, with animation and the player automatically saying "Who's a good doggy!" for dogs (with a chatbox message "He tries to lick your hands as you pet him.") and for stray dogs. The both respond with "Woof!" and the stray dog starts following you around for a time.

It's going to be a consumable item that you get in a lootbox. I like that Warframe actually removed the pet feature and reimbursed everyone because one guy started going at it like a slot machine. The devs realized that having a button that let people buy random pets was too powerful and addicting. Meanwhile, Blizzard and EA might just start charging for each step your character takes.

I vaguely remember something about dogs evolving certain looks to their eyes because it was more likely a human would take them in. Really that's probably just natural selection via humans thinking certain eyes are cuter than others, butanyways.
