  • Delighted to sit down with Australian and Salomon athlete Lucy Bartholomew for a long overdue conversation. A day before the big festivities kicked off in Chamonix, France we covered her journey into ultrarunning, how the youngster ran her first ultra in her teenage years, what it's like to travel and live her most authentic life and much much more.

There is something remarkably courageous and inspiring about Lucy. And it's not about her running. It's about how she deals with more than her fair share of adversity to live her best possible life, and doing so with values that include ambition, kindness, curiosity, grace, and a smile.

The interview chemistry was fantastic. And there really is just something so inspiring and comforting about Lucy. I love how determined she was at such a young age, and she manages to be so ambitious yet laid back at the same time.

As you two were speaking so openly about issues around eating disorders and expectations/pressure within the athletic community around food, weight and body image, I was reminded of Mary Cain talking about being pressured so brutally by Salazar and the Nike coaches to achieve and maintain an unhealthy low body weight, and the negative consequences it had for her physical and mental health. My impression is that most male running coaches are severely under informed about healthy nutrition for women runners, especially younger ones. Props to you guys for talking about this.

I actually really like Lucy she's just a normal person, just being herself. Hard to find people like that these days. Great interview thanks for sharing x

It’s super nice for me to see someone closer to my age in this community. Lucy is a great example for me, thanks Billy!

What an incredible collab. Billy, your videos inspired me so much before my first marathon at 18 (you even replied to my comment before the race which gave me such a boost!) and Lucy, I've been hardcore fangirling for the past few months ever since I discovered your ultrarunning - even though you're just a couple years older than me you are such a massive inspiration and I want to be you when I grow up haha

Great interview. Thanks for asking the hard questions about eating disorders and needing to be thin. Lucy's honesty is great and I love her decisions about racing! Great interview.

thank you for sharing! very inspiring to follow your own bliss not the opinion of others! that is right way of ambition that comes from authenticity. I always wonder how is the life of those people who i see winning, running well. what about the rest of time. the rest of time is what makes them win, be great.

Lucy B is the B(om)b! After meeting Lucy in person at the Kendall Mountain Race in Silverton two years ago ? one year later, She took time to spend with my 11 year-old daughter, Dewa, when she was in ilg's h(om)etown of Durango and Dewa got to run our backyard summit; Hogsback with Lucy which was TOTALLY transforming for Dewa, so THANK YOU, Lucy! love the way you wear your emotions out loud, it helps many young runners like Dewa (who, btw, is CRUSHING Her first XC season!). Keep cranking ever Higher, Lucy! (ps; Dewa is still looking for Her Lucy Cap!) head bowed, spirit vowed...

A meaningful conversation between two very inspiring and thoughtful people. The technical difficulty in the middle was very minor and I think it added a humorous moment to the podcast rather than detracting from it. Great work as usual.

This is so inspiring. I think Lucy is such an honest athlete. I follow many athletes journeys on social media to both get inspired, motivated but also to learn. And I think you can only really learn from the truth, which is, that running ain't always rainbows and butterflies. There is so much behind it. Also the way you covered the topic of eating disorders is really honest and I want to thank you for that Lucy. Stay as honest and authentic as you are, you are loved for it!

One should NOT be doing 100k races or even marathons at the age of 16. They, after all, are still children and their bodies are simply not developed enough to handle that kind of distance
