  • I get a lot of questions about cleaning and re proofing textile bike clothing. So i nicked my mates £1500 Rukka adventure suit and made this demonstration video using NIKWAX Tec wash and TX wash in water proofer.

I used exactly the same technique on my Dainese Goretex jacket and trousers that I wore all year round from 2006-18. I lived in London, did c. 10k miles a year and the amount of dirt that got into the fabric was unbelievable. Its the sort of thing you don't notice until you look at the colur of the water coming out of the washing machine. I washed the suit twice a year (Ocober and March) in Nikwax tech wash and TX reproofer and and it remained fully waterproof, even in torrential rain and inches of water on the motorway. Eventually the zips failed and after 12 years of faithful service the cost of replacing two zips put it beyound economic repair but its waterproofing was never in doubt.

mate of mine used to swear by baby shampoo and hand wash. Tried to claim on his warranty because the Aramid panels started to disintegrate. Clothing company refused his claim because it was the baby shampoo that had caused the damage! Thanks for mentioning this issue. Its not just about cleaning, its about preserving the lifesaving properties of your kit. Tops marks and a like from me!

Just a tip from someone who used to repair washing machines, on some machines the drain pump will operate first before it folks with water so as to drain it any residual water from the last wash. If you fill the powder draw with liquid soap it will go straight into the drum and the pump will drain it beefier it fills with water. Put your liquid soap in a soap cup and put it on top of the wash before you switch the machine on.

    • @domster200

Very interesting, sensible guide to care of synthetic outer clothing. In my forty odd years of biking I have tried many different types of clothing. What I found with the synthetic fabrics is that, although very good at keeping you dry and warm, they just don't last. This may not be the case with clothing at the upper end of the price scale but I have never been able to afford the very best so, for me, this is moot point.
I now use two jackets, a traditional bike leather and an Oxford wax cotton. I use 'Leather Genie' products to clean the leather and make it water resistant. My current jacket is about 16 years old and is good for riding through showers and does not creak when I move! I carry an over suit if torrential rain is likely. I combine this with a Cashmere jumper (expensive but worth it) as it can be rolled up and kept in a jacket pocket, is very warm and if your jacket lets in water will still keep about 80% of its insulation properties when damp.
My wax cotton is 5 years old and sheds any water Mother Nature throws at it. I reproof it with wax yearly but find that a more frequent application of Leather Genie (same as I use on my leather) keeps it tip top. I know this comment has little to do with this video and the guidance in it but I thought I'd mention what I do for the financially challenged rider, as many riders, especially young riders, struggle to buy the best gear and rely on traditional clothing.

A good way to dry gear after it's stopped dripping is to use a dehumidifier. Also useful after getting caught in a storm. I recently got a pint of water out if my jacket after getting soaked. That's what led me to wash my jacket as it was filthy.

Very nice suit, I once used Nikwax on Goretex jacket from Dane, when I bought it, the textile felt sturdy and stiff, the jacked felt like a little armor. I've gone trough the process like you did in the video and when it dried, the textile felt very different, very supple and stiffnes was totaly gone, didn't felt anywhere near that initial armor I so much liked. now it's just like I wear a burlap bag. Probably did something wrong or used to much product I don't know. My new Richa Armada jacket needs a clean I guess but very afraid of going down the same road as with previous jacket. Did you experienced it with the nice Rukka suit? What's your recommendation? After seeing your very good explanatory vid I like to try it again but.. Thanks for putting this vid out Stu!!

hello! just saw this video while searching for content of this type.
very good tips and i'll try the Nikwax products to my Modeka Tacoma jacket, that already deserves some care of this kind. was never very keen on using sprays but it's probably my mistake.
but, as you say, this type of wash should be done one or two time a year, so for who uses the jackets all year how should it be cleaned when it has enough dust, dirt, one stain or another, etc, from daily use?
washing it with just clean water? just with the tech wash?
or just wash it these two times a year, when using these products?
also these wash liquids cause no arm on the breathable mesh panels on the jackets, namely the summer ones, right_
    best of regards.

How to go about, if I don't have one of those washing machines. I only have a twin tub washing machine. Spins too fast.
    What to do?

Yes it will, providing the care label permits machine washing.

Great stuff. I’ll check the label, keep up the good work. 👍
