    Hi Andy
Maltby locals have such respect for the fallen of both world wars ...
That wall of poppies is stunning and most unusual.....along with the two Cenotaphs ....
My respect to the people of Maltby..
    Also a lovely place...
    Well done Andy

London here but I grew up in Maltby many years ago - the Comp - was the Grammar School back then and the Leisure Centre was built on he old Council offices, the Civic centre. The Full Life Church was the old Folks home, my Mom worked there while I was at school.
Todays Concil HQ used to be the "EDward Dunn memorial Home"
The old Chaple like building on Firth Cresent was the Church of Ascension. My Parents married ther and I was christened there.
The poppy Wall on Bluth Road was the old fnce around Maltby Craggs School I was there as a child but they demolished in in 2008.
The Five Rivers pub used to be called the White Swan. Great pub and one of my first watering holes when I turned 18.
Thanks for this Video, Nostalia overload for me.

Oh man, the nostalgia feels! Grew up and went to school here from the ages of 6-11. Lived in Australia from 16 on so have not seen it for many decades. Actually recognise some places still. The Whiston and Wickersley vids (went to school in the latter from 11-16, when it was a Comprehensive!) also shivered my timbers. Happy days.

That's great! Once again someone who's moved abroad seeing these and loving them, always a nice comment to get. Thank you! :D

Hi Andy lovely to see Maltby. The old chapel on Firth Crescent was The Church of the Ascension built for the miners of Maltby Pit to Worship. My wedding was the last one held there in 1992. Princess Margaret (The Queen's sister used to stay with Lord and Lady Scarbrough for the weekend. And his cousin Joanna Lumley was seen having a drink in the Black Lion at Firbeck.

Definitely a Part 2 worthy comment right there! Thanks Claire! That'll be why they're called Ascension Mews then? :D

Thank you for posting this, i came from scotland in 1979 to maltby. i miss the place, lovely people. my best friend owned the queens, great times being a teenager in maltby. being fostered by a lovely mining family back then was a life saver back then - such generous people. i left in 1990....it was originally called bymalt in the domesday book.

Great video of my home town left over 20 years ago brought back many memories running and cycling around those streets 🙂. My pal lived on the Sandbeck estate, so we camped out in tents in the private woodlands.

    • @TheVillageIdiot
      @TheVillageIdiot  Před 3 lety +1

He lived on Sandbeck Estate? That's amazing, I wish I'd have got into that, but with it all being private it's nigh on impossible with CCTV and security everywhere nowadays. Not that I would trespass, but it'd be awesome to look at it.
      Glad you liked it :D

@@TheVillageIdiot Yes there's a few houses on there and his dad & mum both worked for the Earl of Scarborough. I always remember it's a very long road up to the houses and I had to always have visits planned, if I ever visited Stuart unannounced we would have a guy with a shotgun stop us. Quite frightening as children to be honest.
I'm watching your videos, I grew up in Rotherham, live in Blackpool now and haven't been back in a long time, so I'm enjoying reminiscing. As kids we got all over the borough on our bikes so lots of memories for me 😀
Have you done a Rawmarsh one? As can't see it in the listings.
