This was a fun video, Katie! Like to use the zebra mild liner highlighters in my sketchbook & they have a lovely brush tip on them - the colours are more muted than traditional neon colours so they’re beautiful!

Very fun video 😄 I have seen pieces people have made using highlighters, but not the process, so thank you for taking us along your experiments. I really love how it turned out, and the colour palette definitely suits you 😊💜 I think this would be a great exercise for loosening up, because you don't take it so serious when you have some highlighters. And you've kinda forced to embrace the texture of the mark making. Definitely going to try this in some way 😄

Gorgeous illustration Katie! I have a couple of these highlighters and like using them for quick life drawing sketches. I think you’d like ‘cloudy blue’, it’s a dusky purple toned blue.

I did enjoy watching your video tonight!! Since you don’t sketch there are no pencil lines on the paper, which makes it so interesting to see where your lines are going next! Next thing you know, there is a garden, sidewalk, wall, and building. And it all comes together beautifully. Wonderful video Katie and truly, a beautiful piece of art in your journal. ❤❤❤

Ive been using a sketchbook thats sort of in between these two lately (because i like to use one sketchbook for drawing/inspiration/journaling, collage and any other bits and bobs)
The sketchbook is actually the soft cover Strathmore drawing sketchbook. Its similar to the mixed media (which I LOVE btw) but its more off white, a little thinner and has 96 pages instead of 64. Its also slightly cheaper. Even the b5 is only around 15 dollars US. I just wanted to throw that out there. It takes watercolor surprisingly well so of course gouache works perfectly. Colored pencils are great in it too.

Nice! Very informative on the sketchbook test part. Now I know that this highlighters are not for me as I only use Royal Talens 🫠 but I might rebel and get one or two of them 😂 thanks Katie!
I find that in the royal talens if I layer quite a bit of my brush pens I get that same bleeding that Katie had with the highlighters in this 🧡
Thank you for watching, Fauzana! As Colzo has said, you can still use them for a light layer! So I reckon a rebellious little shopping trip is still on the cards 😜
Could you report back to us in a few months if the highlighters have faded? I use a similar set of name brand highlighters but they are definitely NOT lightfast; the lighter ones (particularly the neons/fluorescents) faded significantly over time -- even in a sketchbook. (The sketchbook does get opened a lot though, particularly outside on sketch crawls.) Definitely don't make art with them if you plan to hang up your picture on a sunny wall! Would be nice to hear your experience with them as time passes... Thanks! Really cute painting, btw! :)
Oh yes of course, what a great idea! I didn't mention about them being lightfast in this video, as you say I'm pretty certain they wouldn't be but it's really interesting to hear that the lighter ones are worse! I'll keep my eye on the sketchbook page and see if it fades - I'll probably do a tour of this sketchbook in a few months time so I can update you then! 💛
I tried something similar before with zebra mildliners and they could not blend at all 😂 it's a cool idea to use them mixed media though
I think it would definitely depend on paper stock! I feel like using stationery items opens up a whole new level of art supplies we can use now 🤣
