I appreciate your unbiased observations…for the untrained ear..it’s mind boggling..especially Rob. When I first heard this..my comment was you can still hear Austin’s souther twang ..subtle…but it’s there….
Rob had two comments about this recording during the premiere. First, do not ever expect them to do at a live show, because it takes a different kind of preparation to sing than the rest of the show. Second, he played the recording for his father at Father's Day, since opera is what his father most enjoys. His father cried to hear his son once again sing what he originally trained for.

Props to them for introducing their audience to opera. Austin was 100% expected but Rob was 200% amazing.
Thank you, Peter. As much as I like these two, I fully understand that we should respect those professional opera singers who have honed their crafts for years. While to ordinary people's ears Rob and Austin sound 'perfect', that's not the case to those in the genre.
Still, we, as homefries, should be very proud of Rob and Austin. As non-opera singers, based on Peter's (and Maggie's) comments, they seem to do a superb job...
Another thing that we should really appreciate them singing Nessun Dorma is that they bring Opera to those who normally do not listen to the genre.
Agreed! I'm a Home Fry, & I absolutely adore both Rob & Austin. I've met both of them in person several times, & they're truly lovely people as well as extremely talented singers. BUT that doesn't mean I automatically think they're perfect at everything they do (nor do they think that). I know nothing about opera, so to my untrained ears it sounds fantastic. But I absolutely understand that to professional opera singers there's probably a lot of small things to improve upon. Opera is a very unique style of singing that requires years of training to perfect. That said, I do think Austin & Rob did a great job considering that they haven't spent years training in that style..

I’m a home fry and I love these guys and they are both extremely talented. And I understand that there’s a huge difference between opera and country but not being trained opera singers they did wonderful, absolutely wonderful. Just wondering if you’ve ever tried singing country?
@@carolynyerby361 Yes I actually lived in Nashville for summer and sang country music, and I grew up in the mountains of Virginia so country music has been a big part of my life
They said that they recorded this separately, and when Austin heard Rob he wanted to redo it after they got off tour. Austin wanted to give it everything he had to make sure it was given the respect it deserves.
I don't think there's a reactor more qualified to react and analyze this than you.
When Rob and Austin take off their hat and look at each other, reminds me of the glance in the Ring of Fire on the Sing-Off before Tim hits that massive LOW note. Like they are saying, "They have no idea what is coming."
The point of dropping the hats (and the change of clothing) is a very clear signal that this will NOT be country.
Both Austin and Rob studied vocal performance in college. Rob has more training in opera than Austin has, but Rob hasn’t sung opera In 15 years. Austin majored in musical theater, but did some opera in college.
I'm assuming they hired opera coaches in the making of this video. So they did what they could with what they had.
I really appreciate the way you approach this-giving these guys all the credit they deserve for even trying this, and for everything they’re doing well, and showing the respect you have for them as singers, then pointing out where a professional opera singer would handle things differently. Very fair, very constructive and balanced. I also love the way you pick out details to talk about, then go back and let us hear it again (some of us really need the demonstration). You do a great job of making some very abstract thoughts make sense. I’ve said this before-I really wish I’d had a teacher like you when I studied vocal music in college. I might have stuck to it instead of getting discouraged.
Even if it isn’t perfect operatic technique, I do love this piece. Austin’s obvious joy and bright tone are really pleasing, and I could listen to Rob sing like this all day. Hope they veer out of their lane more often!

I was hoping that you would react to this. It's nice to hear the explanations about the differences in styles and seeing how close they got. Both are really talented and I'm excited that they went out of their wheelhouse to attempt something new. And that they did it well. I do have to say that your "that's a choice" comment cracked me up.
I took one class on singing, am not a Home Fry, and do not like opera. I am trying to wrap my head around how it is I just spent 45 minutes raptly listening to your commentary and loved it. Damn, you're good.
LOL Dare I say welcome to the Home Free rabbit hole? These guys are an amazing vocal band (there's five of them) and I think you would really enjoy their music.
I think if you don't love opera but enjoyed this you would also love Olimpico by Dimash Kudaibergen. A nice rock approach but operatic approach. Dimash does have a solid bel canto training background though. You can search Dimash Olimpico Arnau. Enjoy.
Ahahaha--you sound a bit like me when I found Peter's channel: a combination of "*What* is this I'm listening to?!?" &, after I finished watching, "Why was that so interesting? I never even knew that ____ existed before, let alone learned about it...." Peter's a great engrossing teacher regardless of what genre of music he's talking about, & I enjoy all sorts of music more because of him. Plus I shocked a music geek friend recently by knowing something, which was all kinds of fun! >;-)
Good job. It's been over 35 years since I was a voice student learning to sing opera. My professor at that time used very subjective terms to try to teach me how to sing and I just didn't get it. I've always needed objective explanations. So I appreciate you going at least a little bit into the physics of singing. I ended up taking a different path and switched to physics. Now I combine the two as a audio engineer. Even in the world of sound reinforcement, I encounter some vocalists who naturally have that "cut" (an emphasis on particular harmonics generated by vocal folds and shapes of resonance cavities) and others I need to use EQ and compression techniques to draw out those harmonics. In opera where you aren't going to have sound reinforcement, the vocalist needs to work to develop those harmonic patterns they don't naturally have. So you are right in saying that there is much about singing opera that isn't natural. There's a very good reason for that.
Rob is my favorite in the group because he is a very good whistler...another talent he hasn't used a lot in Home Free. But to hear his operatic chops stand up to professional critique also? That makes me respect him on a whole other level. Thank you for the honest deep dive into this aria. I clung to every word.
Peter, we got what we expect from you, a true defining of what we heard, yet affirmation that they have really great voices. You are one that I truly appreciate as you tell it like it is but always so encouraging. You did not come across as negative, but educationally balanced and fair. Quite frankly Rob and Austin brought a large audience to opera experience that hopefully in the long run helped both interest to the opera world and attention to Home Free. Thank you Peter.
Thank you for this reaction. I found it honest and of a complimentary nature. It's not always understood how very complex singing is. These two guys are amazingly accomplished.
This was the one aria that would always bring tears to my eyes when Luciano Pavarotti sang it. I got to see Turandot in Florence with Zubin Mehta conducting, so it also brought back fond memories , (I still have the Italian libretto). Your analysis was interesting and spot on Peter. While you'd never expect this good a performance from two country music singers, I agree that Rob's voice was remarkable!
Rob's voice almost brought me to tears on this one - I definitely had the sting in my eyes! As much as I love this aria, up until this was released, no other singer after Pavarotti has pulled that reaction out of me again. Rob did it! (I mean no offense to any other vocalist with this; it's just my own personal emotional reaction to hearing it.)
Rob must sing more opera! He’s amazing.

The key is getting us home fries to hear something many never would consider and then possibly get curious...plus it made Robs dad cry in happiness so I'm happy twice

You had me listening to your whole breakdown on regular speed which is truly an accomplishment. It felt like you really enjoyed getting to drill down on their "operatic" performance instead of their usual music. I respect the honesty and educational information in your analysis. I also appreciate that you give these fellas the props they're due for being brave enough to take this on. There are a handful of you professional singer reactors which likely read to the apprehension these two experienced prior to this debut. This was a commendable performance from two talented singers, and it brought emotional responses. I actually saw Pavarotti perform this in Modena when I was twelve. I had never seen so many people weeping in one place before that, and that experience resonated with me all over again during Rob's lead-off. Great review!
Great analysis, thanks. I appreciate your honesty since this is your lane. I've heard Rob did some opera early in his career, so he has a jump on Austin. Both are to be admired for putting their necks out there on the chopping block. We know how the internet can be. Thanks again.
Dear Peter: I have no music formation whatsoever, just a normal guy who loves to hear beauty in songs and I usually react to what moves my heart. What I enjoyed most in the singing of Austin and Rob (of whom I know very little actually) is the sheer joy that came across. I had no idea what they were singing about but it seemed to me that they were singing about a great and abiding love.
Then I listened to your analysis and was literally floored. You opened a door to musical analysis I was not aware of and showed me another side of beauty about singing I did not know existed. The precision in your language and your attention to details are wonderful! I could pick out those details in their singing after you would point them out and that led me to go and listen to the same piece by pavaroti and I could immediately tell the difference in the power of his voice. No question about it: he can sing in ways that Rob and Austin couldn't but ... their singing touched my heart, his didn't. It came across as mechanically sound but lacking soul... not something I could clearly explain. You could blame my ignorance in music. In any case, thank you so much for your intelligent comment. I know now a little bit more about singing and opera than I did before watching you.

Not upset with your analysis. To our untrained ears, it sounded beautiful. It had a relatable sound, if that makes sense. "Opera for the common man," if you will. As a music educator who works with kids primarily between the ages of 0 - 5, I really appreciated hearing this. I'm an instrumentalist who's had to train her voice a little more as is the nature of working with early childhood music, but most of my work is very basic music theory along with child development and neuroscience. Fascinating stuff, and I really love learning about it, but I miss the deep dives into the more advanced music techniques. I really enjoy your videos and always learn a ton.
There are three meanings to the word "critic." You hit definitions 1 and 2, but didn't even come close to definition 3. Nice work. Thanks for the elucidation. I had not realized there was such a difference between opera and other forms of singing.

I really hope he doesn't get hate for simply providing an honest analysis as a professional! I adore Austin & Rob, & they did great considering their lack of operatic training. I can (& do) appreciate that they were willing to attempt something way outside their comfort zone & put themselves out there for all of us to hear. But I have no doubt that they're far from pro-level to people with trained ears. Hopefully my fellow Home Fries can also appreciate an honest & professional review. We're a fiercely loyal fan base & very protective of our guys, but we're also reasonable (mostly, LOL).

Dan's dad was Italian (Dan speaks italian) and they used to listen to opera together and Dan's mother was an opera singer and Dan has 10+ years of classical training. Dan did this song as a tribute to his dad when he passed away so his version is very emotional. 💖

I grew up listening to Jussi Bjoerling singing this (still the greatest tenor ever for me) and you can definitely hear the difference between a "trained" and "untrained " voice. Thanks so much for this in depth and really interesting deconstruction of what those differences are. I can hear it but I never had the background to understand what I was hearing. Mad love and respect to Rob and Austin for doing this.
I appreciated your analysis. I know Rob was nervous to do this as he had not sung opera for over 15 years. I think they both will appreciate your critique as you were complimentary to both of them and that is a big deal coming from an opera singer. I loved their performance and even though not perfect they have now introduced opera to a whole group of people who would never have listened to it. Bravo to all of you. I personally have never cared much for opera it actually makes me feel jittery. I get so uptight I have to turn it off. I love that people with an operatic background are no longer as dismissive of other styles of singing as they were when I was younger. Of course there were shortcomings. The Three Tenors struggled with uneven eighths. Let's simply enjoy sharing the talents of those more skilled than ourselves and allow joy to flow from good singing.
I love it when a reactor educates me. I know very little opera but could also hear the difference in so many ways between these wonderful singers. I’m so glad that Austin talked Rob into doing this! They’ve taken a huge chance and have succeeded. I agree with your analysis of both men. Even I can tell the differences in their singing what? singing styles? As a Home Free super fan I was worried that you were just going to trash them given your background as a professional opera singer. They did excellent in my opinion knowing that they do not sing opera as a profession and do not have that level of training either. I was thoroughly impressed.
Thank you for this. I accidently stumbled on their version and couldn't believe how many people were saying how "perfect" it was. When you have heard it sung by opera singers (Turandot is one of my favs - I cried my face off!) you can absolutely tell the difference between people "singing" opera and opera singers.
Abbbbbbsolutely! Both these gents did a great job (especially Rob), but there are significant differences compared to people who pursue opera as a career
For us who doesn't listen to opera regularly or have a trained ear it does sound perfect, but I think most people understand it is not as good as if a proffessional operasinger perform this piece, and few people excpect it to be....
I was that odd kid in the Southeast who adored opera as a small child. I have heard a ton of different tenors do this aria, but I love the difference this one brings with the twang from Austin while Rob pulls it back to the traditional sound.

When I first listened to this, even with my very limited opera knowledge, I thought the same thing, that while they are both excellent singers and did a great job, Rob was much more operatic. I was very impressed with both, but especially Rob in this case.
This is literally the first time my mind has been opened to what opera really is, why its so amazing and so freakin' difficult! Mad props to this video, I could easily listen to you talk about this stuff, your craft, for hours! Days even! Having non-operatic singers try to sing opera did make it more approachable though, so maybe have those as examples every now and then?

It doesn’t matter if they are professional operatic singers, they are darned good at what they did. I could listen to them over and over. They are professional singers who entertain millions of people, just normally with other genres not opera. Way to go Rob and Austin. We love ❤you so much. Peter analyzes this way too much in this podcast.
When I first heard Rob I thought he had that 'opera' sound to his voice, which I had never heard with anything he had ever sang before. Austin definitely has that musical theater sound, but not the 'opera' sound. But they both did a fantastic job. Travissimo to you and them!!! 🥰🥰🥰

Like many others, I've been waiting for you to critique this, and a bit nervous, because of your thorough knowledge and passion about opera. You did a great analysis and reaction. In a way, this was a difficult reaction to do because both Rob & Austin are excellent non-opera singers (with a rabid fan base) singing a completely different, difficult genre. Thanks much.

I am a giant Home Free fan and I was a little scared to hear what you had to say. But this all made perfect sense to me. I found it very interesting. I was not surprised to hear that this type of music is more suited to Rob than Austin given their training. That seemed sort of obvious to me, but now I have some idea why. I thought your criticisms were still polite and not meant to be mean or "I could do this so much better than you". More like a teacher might tell you in a lesson. Been on the receiving end and you feel better about criticism if it's constructive. Thanks for the education!

I am not an opera fan and have listened to this so many times. They make people like country and now introduce us to opera.
It is important to note there are many types of operas. Most people who say they do not like opera are probably talking about those “heavy” serious ones. I suggest an opera like “The Marriage of Figaro” reading the translation along with it. Good for you to open your mind to other genres!💗

I was absolutely amazed at how well they did. I heard Rob was nervous about singing this since it had been 15 years from the last time he sang opera. Austin had to really do some talking and then when he heard how good Rob sounded, he went back and re-recorded his own soundtrack. To me that is high praise from Austin to Rob. I agree neither of them sound like they were doing this full time, but they did themselves and Home Free proud. Way to go guys and I'm glad you agree they did well for non-professionals. Now THAT is a great idea!! You should contact Rob about a collaboration!! I'd LOVE to see that! If I were to compare Rob's performance on this aria with the great tenors around me as a voice major, Rob would shine. The open vowels and warmth of tone were gorgeous.

As soon as I saw this, my first thought was, oh man, I can't wait to watch Peter's video on this. You were very informative, and I enjoyed this entire analysis.
This was a great analysis video. Like many Home Fries, I was both nervous and excited to hear your opinion. I know many people will have a fit that you didn't see them as doing a perfect rendition. But most of us realize that it's not a realistic idea considering the very specific training it takes to sing opera. And even if you do have the training, just like many things in life, if you don't use it, you lose it. Something that you brought up about mouth positioning with Rob was really interesting. I've often noticed how his mouth is more vertical than spread wide. I thought it was just my imagination. Thank you for taking the time to do a breakdown that those of us who are not opera aficionados could understand.
I think it is important to realize that the target for this performance is not a live, on stage performance. It is intentionally sung for a recorded video performance. Singing it as you would for a live operatic performance, would arguably be a suboptimal aesthetic choice, in this instance. While their performance may be operatically incorrect to some degree, it may actually be more accessible to the general public who perhaps have not developed an ear for traditional operatic styling. While Peter's observations about the difference between this performance and a traditional operatic performance are interesting. it doesn't mean they are in error for making different choices. Indeed, their original CZcams title started with "Two COUNTRY Singers try singing OPERA". Clearly they are under no delusions about how they are outside their area of expertise. I applaud them for bringing this song to a new audience that might never had heard it.

Peter! Fantastic reaction! You really make me wait for your HF reactions. I read your comment before watching the video and it gave me the wrong impression. Your reaction did not warrant an 'open mind'. You have to be an idiot to think that you are holding them to the standard of an operatic tenor. You evaluated and enjoyed their performance, keeping in mind their natural talent, experience and field of expertise (training). At the same time you very grippingly demonstrated how they would have sounded as fully trained opera singers. This was a critique, not a criticism. Loved it. Thank you.
You my Patreon friend blow my musical brain with your vocal analysis. I completely agree when you explain it regarding their sounds for operatic vs musical theatre singing. You open my eyes to the language, the vowel shapes, drop jaw, brighter sounds, and I could go on and on. I would like to see you review David Phelps when he does the same aria. Again, he is not an opera singer, but a country gospel singer who is incredible in his own right as a tenor, again with quite the low range as well. I have always thought it was a great version. Having YOU an opera singer evaluate it would mean so much to this vocalist. Brava!! AND David does his live. Typos? Sorry it’s late and I’ve been reading scores for hours.

I love that one of the first full operatic songs that you've did an analysis on is this, it's awesome to hear you critique something that you're so passionate about, I know that you're passionate about all music but in this particular one you're just so comfortable discussing all of the techniques and your face kind of lights up when you talk about it. I appreciate the in-depth critique on this even if it goes over 30 minutes LOL it's awesome to learn so much about it.
I will say that I know that some people will think that it sounds like you're bashing their singing because it's not professional but to me I think it's nice to hear how well they're doing and you pointing out their awesome points yet explaining how it would be done in a professional setting so I truly appreciate that part as well. I mean when you're critiquing a video you can't just be all like oh this is totally awesome they've done everything right you have to be able to explain the flip side of that as well especially in a setting that you're a professional in. Amazing analysis as always

Liked your comments, but would like to point out that when opera singers record operas or just arias, they are also singing in a studio with orchestra, mikes & balancing; Rob studied opera & Austin musical theater, so they are aware of what is needed vocally for different types of music; that said, I did enjoy learning different aspects needed for singing & your reaction to this video; thx

Thanks for your analysis. I have never been a fan of opera except maybe some Andrea Bocelli & a few others. But I have always appreciated the talent it takes to sing opera. I was pretty impressed with Rob & Austin's version of Nessun Dorma. I have heard this famous song done by Pavarotti. I think I was more surprised by Rob's range & powerful delivery than even Austin's. Pretty good for a couple of country boys! Nice to see them dressed up in suits & looking classy.
Bocelli isn't really an opera singer, he's what is called a "popera which is a mix of pop and opera.
