In my Company TELUS: Contractors: depending upon contract. Full time: 4 weeks notice. But they always have an option to fire on the spot, same day.

Better to start searching since you have job it will be easier to search as u mentioned layoff happened few times
Seems that you both work as contractors. In that, there can be no notice period. Full time is somewhat safer, you get certain benefits too if you get laid off.

I am a contractual employee in Pakistan, but I went through again to test and interview for an extension for renewal of my contract and I felt depressed although my test and interview went well but I was thinking after working 7 years with an institution doesn't give you surety of extension. I am getting older and will over age soon if I can get a permanent job....
I am also an IT skilled person but due to some issues I haven't thought to move foreign, which is also difficult like you described.....stay blessed you both

Unfortunately capitalism works on the principal of profit and loss, layoff is just an email away for everyone. All these realtors who sold the idea of million dollar houses with mortgages have already made their commission.
Learn something useful so no one can fire you. Education is not helping in canada, and canada does not value your experience , education, and hard work. They just want labor people.
Then become a labor, simple
They have education. So they will get another job in time. That is how things work here.
