B1 is very high in pork, barley and legumes, not the most popular foods these days, but traditionally people ate them. Also, lysine is needed to absorb calcium and, with all the nuts and seeds that people eat these days (they're high in arginine, which competes with lysine), it's likely that a lysine deficiency could be the problem as well.
