Don mattrick killed xbox. They have never recovered from that disastrous Xbox One E3 press conference.
They don't need to be the #1 console to justify the Xbox's existence as a 3rd place competitor, just like they don't need to be the #1 laptop manufacturer to keep making SurfaceBooks. Being a day and date console+PC publisher has helped offset their weaker console sales.

Doom 3 with path tracing would be insane
Playing Doom 3 on 64mb ram right this second -- still better lighting than Final Fantasy Rebirth . .
This would make the game a lot brighter in dark areas due to bounce lighting.
@@cube2foxprobably the opposite actually, I think the game would be a lot darker
Doom 3 has to be the most underrated horror game to ever exist. It's still the only game which makes me jump in fear and terror even tho I've probably played it for almost two decades...
I think it really needs an asset overhaul because of how heavily the models rely on normal maps to hide the low resolution geometry. Even back when Doom3 was first released the character model geometry was passable at best, imo. I keep wondering if there'd be some algorithmic way of treating the normal maps as a height/displacement map and trace against that. It would probably require a more software-based RT scheme because I don't think you'd be able to sort that in a BVH.
I have a PS5 but I can see why console demand is slowing. I haven't been truly excited about a new game in a really long time. The new focus of first party on cross-gen has been a big part of that. My motto for my PS5 is that the best thing I can say about it is that it is an awesome PS4. Right now I'm playing through my backlog and am up to Far Cry 5. There hasn't been a PS5 game yet that felt to me like it was a next gen must have.
Previous console generations would have have amassed a sizable number of next gen only games by now which would be on sale constantly. That and the typical console price drop would have been a very enticing lure to get new gamers to purchase the hardware. Now there isn't a significant vault of of next-gen only games gamers would want to buy the new hardware to play. On top of that, there is not a lot to look forward to gamewise. GTA 6 would be the exception that proves the rule.
I think the gaming industry is going to have a crash, and out of it they will discover gameplay again. Right now the focus is on narrative and player retention at the expense of new and interesting gameplay. Narrative is fine, but it's very expensive to pull of right, and player retention _(live services)_ actually harms gameplay in order to stretch out play time and give paid-for items more of a reason to exist. Instead of hiring an army of artist to create the assets needed for a narrative focus, fewer assets will be combined together with better gameplay to give the variety needed... Well at least until AI kicks in and brings the cost of creating assets way down.
I concur with you sir, you nailed it. My thoughts exactly.
I agree with you, mate. The PS5 is essentially a PS4 Pro Pro.
The gaming community really bothers me atm. So many people blindly bought the PS5 thinking it was going to continue in PS4's success, but it hasn't, and instead of being adults and holding Sony responsible they'd rather just pretend it's all okay and continue to attack Xbox.
I have a SX as well and Microsoft have done so much right this generation. They've released some great games albeit like PS5 not as many as they should have, Gamepass continues to be by far the best value in gaming; I've barely spent any money on games and I've played a ton of games that I've loved that I would never have even considered had I needed to buy them, the ui is still by far the best with VRR etc still performing better on Xbox,
I could go on but for me Xbox is winning this generation even if many so called "gamers" refuse to accept it. And it's a pity they don't as it would only help the industry improve.
@@Axispaw1 I wouldn't say _"Xbox is winning this generation"._ It is quite literally doing far worse versus the PS5 than the XB1 did against the PS4, and every complaint I have with the PS5 goes doubly so for the Series consoles.
While I have been unimpressed with PS5 game line up, there are still good games there like Horizon Forbidden West and God of War Ragnarok. My issue is that they are not all that different than their previous PS4 games. They're better, just not that much better. _(Hmm... actually I liked Zero Dawn more than Forbidden West)_ It's why even though I intend to eventually buy Ragnarok & Spider-Man 2, I haven't bothered picking them up yet. I'm simply not going to enjoy them more than the PS4 games in my backlog. I'll buy them up when they get down in the sub $30 range.
As for the Xbox Series hardware, I honestly can't think of a game I want to play on it. I used to be a huge Halo series fanboy, like stood in line to buy a new game at release fanboy, but now I don't even want to play Infinite. Even Game Pass does nothing for me. You mention how it saves you money, but I have a large gaming backlog, so I have no need to even buy new games right now. That is made much easier since I haven't considered any new game in years a day one must-have.
In fact that's kinda my whole point. This gen has been so boring that there is little incentive to buy anything. Not only do I have a lot of unplayed backlog games to go through, but I'm occasionally replaying old favorites. This is the first console generation that I have not only not made a hard break with prior generation, but I'm still playing its games about as much as I previously did. Contrast this with the fact that I didn't play my Xbox 360 at all after I got my PS4, even though I loved the 360. Yeah, that's when I switched from Team Xbox to Team PlayStation. I always planned to eventually get an XB1, but just like with the Series X/S now, outside of Sunset Overdrive, there wasn't any exclusive games I wanted to play on it.
It's been a really slow start for this gen of consoles, and honestly, I've not really been that impressed with any of the games that's been released for this gen, I've not really seen anything game changing yet, and as a PC gamer, I rarely play new games and have been playing through a lot of my backlog, other the years, I've ended up buying so many games on Steam, I decided to chew through them and mostly ignore new games until they drop in price and get patched up, which is the main reason I ignore new games, they are a buggy mess, rather wait it out till it's patched up.
@@KenMathis1 it quite literally isn't doing worse. Xbox have said until they're blue in the face that Xbox hardware sales isn't the only metric of their success like it was with pervious generations. Gamepass on PC and other platforms are also essentially console sales for them. Times have changed.
You say you don't even want to play Halo Infinite. Well don't you think you're part of the problem? You're judging a game without even playing it, which is ridiculous!
I've played Infinite to death and it's incredible, best Halo since 2. Have you played Gears 5? And it's DLC Hivebusters? I bet not and again they're both outstanding games. Starfield? I bet you think it's a poor game and you haven't even played it...
Horizon Forbidden West is poor, after 20 hours I got utterly bored with it. GoW Ragnarok is fine but stale after I put 50 hours into GoW 4, it just wasn't different enough.
Saying what you said about Gamepass shows you obviously don't have it otherwise you'd know exactly what I mean.
You've obviously made up your mind about Series X and you don't even own one. That's the problem with the gaming industry right now, people like you who are judging and basing opinions on what you read in articles or comments sections, not actually owning the console and having your own opinion.
That's what's ruining gaming right now, social media and mob mentality...
Oliver reminds me of a majestic eagle.
Oh yes, that is a great comparison, the bald eagle even though neither the eagle nor Oliver are bals but the eagle is called that due to its white feathers on its head and Oliver clearly shaves his head
young people today are coming into a games industry with 40 years worth of games to play. They don't need to buy new stuff to have a great gaming experience. Super Mario SNES is still better than most games today if you like platforms. Kids don't need to driver new sales when between emulation and legacy hardware there is tons of stuff to play.
That's not how media works.
Movies, music, gaming and all arts require new sales. They can't rely on legacy material, obviously.
@@30yearsoldiam1I agree and thats where Nintendo seems to fit into the market with a lot of their games on Switch
and yet they just play games like Fortnite 🤣
not how it works. kids are *intensively* marketed to, to encourage them to buy what is new and fashionable. Apart from the handful that become very passionate about the medium, very few of them are going to be sold on 30 year old games
I like the idea of having options that allow future hardware to improve games.
The Star Ocean 4 remaster had a bunch of settings that allowed some customisation and while that was intended for PS4/PS4 Pro, it means PS5 can run on max settings almost flawlessly.
I'd like things like that to become common.
Absolutely! I used this all the time when I play SO4.
It is always lovely to see Rich's rare lapses from professionalism. The leprosy laugh at the end was primo!
I like Alex's work for DF, but this is just constructive feedback -- I do not think sleeveless undershirts look professional for someone on screen.
The idea that Bethesda doing more than one game at a time is "strange". BGS can't get 1 game released on 2 platforms out the door without major issues whereas doing multiple would be a courting disaster. This points to a choice made on organization or coordination more than money or manpower. Microsoft opening its wallet before changing core and management is throwing good money after bad.
Microsoft cant manage studios… Its been their forever issue that is literally now just bigger with how many dev studios they have…
How do you own more than a third of the industry yet your output is destroyed by a single nintendo or sony exclusive when it comes to polish and quality, all while filling your games with microtransactions which both sony and nintendo are barely doing or are doing it in an actually sane way like with helldivers
I think a lot of people forget the quality of Bethesda games at launch. The Spiffing Brit just did a playthrough of Fallout 4's launch version, and damn is a broken mess. He did the same with Skyrim last year, and it's just as bad. I mean, who thought it'd be a good idea to have chickens be able to witness crimes and report them to the guards?
If they tried working on multiple games at once nothing would ever get done.
@01:50:13 EA Skate games register joystick inputs at higher rates than the game is displayed. Same in a lot of FPS games.
The inflation being felt these days is part of the problem, but I doubt it is the only problem. I don't understand why so many games have to be 100 hour open world affairs. I just can't see anybody trying to play or caring about playing that much when many of them are trying every conceivable way to extract more money out of you. Who thinks that is the good for the overall health of the market.
Yeah but you have to take into consideration that nobody gives a fuck what you think
It really does depend on the game, games that are well-designed with good mission structure and a lot of contents, I don't mind them taking forever to finish, in fact, games that are well-made and fun to play, many of us wish they were longer, but unfortunately, a lot of open-ended games waste a lot of our time doing basic missions that for the most part are not fun to do and ends up being a time sink.
As for inflation, that's not helping on hardware sales, but I think the greed of the companies isn't helping, there's just far fewer reasons to need to upgrade, whether that be PC or console, so gamers are either holding onto there hardware for much longer on the PC or sticking with the last gen of consoles, and it's a sad reality, because hardware sales would encourage developers to target the more powerful hardware, so basically, the high prices of hardware that's slowing adoption down a lot is holding gaming back on PC and consoles.
Yup, Open world games is an instant “no-buy” from me. I dont want to spend 100 hours on ANY game anymore. Last open world game I played was Horizon and bored out after 12 hours - havent touched an OW game since. Give me a $35 linear game with 12 hours MAX completion time any day of the week.

Maybe, but personally, I would rather have a Steam Deck 2 that offers e-gpu support in a clean package, that would offer the best of both worlds, a portable gaming device that can tap into the power of an e-gpu on the big screen.
It would also mean Valve only needs to support one device and not two, I think that's a better solution as it gives us our cake to eat in both worlds, but only if it's a clean package that just works, in other words, a curated small list of gpu support.

I'm one of those people who actually tend to turn VRR off, on a 120hz set. reason being, i'm sensitve to VRR flicker. I actually disable freesync on my PC monitors for same reason. I know why I have not been paying for games… because the developers are pushing out bad games. Not bad from a premise point of view, but bad because many lack promised features or don’t run well or aren’t polished.

If developers want more money, then push out actually GOOD games that aren’t having these massive issues.

As far as the PS5 Pro, or even the regular PS5 which actually has 40 CUs with 4 disabled/idle. This may be the reason PS5 Pro shows 60 CUs with a higher clock and the numbers not adding up. Also may be why some are saying it is actually 56 CUs. Perhaps I'm wrong but for as long as I been on console they always had disabled CUs. I think the original PS4 actually had 20 CUs (PS5/PS4 Pro @ 40, PS5 Pro @ 60) whereas PS4 only had 2 CUs disabled giving it an operation on 18 CUs before they disabled 4 on the PS5 and likely on the PS5 Pro as well.
this is a binning strategy ie. a chip with up to four failed CU's is binned for this purpose and the cores are disabled.
Is magnetism really the right way to attach controllers given the direction and twisting forces applied to attached controllers?
It is not
My guess is that there's an additional latch or locking mechanism beyond the magnets alone
We really need an RTX Remix conversion for Bioshock.
The big advantage of a Steam Machine over a PC is Valve could sell a capable PC at a much lower price and bypasses the issues non-PC gamers have with PCs. If they don't have to think about what parts to buy, what's compatible, keep up with drivers, bloat ware...etc., that completely changes the narrative for a more casual PC experience. Having a PC that is well priced and w/out the hassle could end up being a big deal.
There's quite some people out there with TV's like the SAmsung Q90T. It does 4K 120hz and it does *have* VRR... but enabling VRR basically instantly ruins the color accuracy the TV usually has. Not just that it also completely forks the gamma for whatever reason *and* influences the local dimming too. For what reason? No clue. But for me it meant not using VRR at all, despite always using it when on my PC and using my monitor. So that 4K 120hz but no-VRR thing: that's me on my consoles.

Not happening till Zenimax or MS now keeps a dork like Todd Howard around as Bethesda's head.

bethesda not ruling out partnering with external developers got me shouting "let obsidian make another fallout game" once again
True, but Obsidian are very busy with multiple of their own projects. Doubt we'd see a new Fallout from them any sooner than we would from BGS
Or outsource some of the work for TES6 to larian and/or Obsidian because good god Bethesda on their own can not make a real current gen game.
I've not exactly been blown away with updates around obsidian's Avowed. A lot of these older studios, it seems like the creative forces have moved on and they've gotten developed a very corporate culture with all that entails.
MS calls the shots now remember? If Phil wants, he can order Todd Howard to move aside and let Obsidian do a game. Us Fallout fans should petition Phil Spencer for it.

As for Series S it is not only about CPU limitations but also both memory capacity and memory bandwidth limitations. It’s understandable if Series S can’t achieve a performance mode for a game with a very large scale. You get what you pay.

The issue with AMDs graphics division is Nvidia has a seemingly Unbreakable Mindshare. They could fix FSR and add much better RT/AI cores. Gamers will still buy Nvidia at a higher premium.
It's basically the Apple consumer mindset but with GPUs. It make sense why AMD is pulling back next gen¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The mindshare excuse doesn't cut it especially after how well Ryzen, especially Zen2 and Zen3 did.
Intel had arguably an even bigger hold on mindshare with CPUs than Nvidia has on GPUs now.
Success of Ryzen showed that it can be broken if you offer the right product at the right price.
@@NatrajChaturvedi there's good a reason for Ryzen success tho. Not only was the product good, Intel also was stagnating and resting on their laurels. Essentially, AMD caught Intel with their pants down. Nvidia on the other hand, are always cautious, constantly have tricks up their sleeves.
@@_Chad_ThunderCock This I agree with but I would still argue AMD could have gained plenty of ground vis a vis Nvidia with the last few generations of Radeon instead of losing ever more marketshare. They prioritize Server CPU sales over everything else and its one reason why Nvidia ends up being the defacto choice for most buyers.
I hope Capcom works with Nvidia in order to implement great path tracing modes for the RE 2, 3 and 4 Remakes, and future games too! The RTX 5000 gen is almost here and 2 more years will come sooner than any of us will realize, meaning RTX 6000! This kind of ultra high features are amazing when they are **well implemented** . The absence of true high quality reflections on mirrors and windows is extremely noticeable and it could be fix with path tracing.

Then, I instantly uninstalled it for another year of updates as it's still nowhere near finished even though apparently I have 150 hours in it without getting anywhere close to finishing the story!

I might have another go at starfield, done 10 hours or so but meh.
I thought it was good but haven't gone back after playing about 20 hours or so.
I'd personally wait until the Shattered Space DLC and mod support are available. No shortage of great games to play in the meantime
It's a slow burn game. There's every chance you might put 100 hours in and never enjoy it, or you might start to enjoy it more and more until you love it.
Wait till most of the big updates come out. They're going to add vehicles soon
@KTK-o Well, the vehicle update isn't confirmed to be soon. It may not even come until the Shattered Space DLC (though I highly doubt it'll be after). That said, it could be soon? They're not in the May 15th update however
John boutta be pissed the F off next episode

You think rockstar will update that game ?
@@Crimsongz yeah but not for free
Speaking as someone in their early to mid 40's and the target buyer demographic from PS1 to PS4, there is absolutely nothing of interest for me with PS5 or Xbox. I feel like I've seen all the AAA games done a million times already. I have a 1080p TV which I've no intention of replacing and all they are adding are graphical flourishes. I own a PC and Steam Deck and find that the indie and AA games available are perfectly entertaining enough.
If anyone can save console gaming it'll be Nintendo, but I fear they shifted away from making the types of games that I really enjoyed in the Gamecube era. As glorious as Mario Wonder was, where is the innovation?
Same here. I'm 42 and feel much the same. I picked up manor lords recently. Amazing city builder / total war hybrid. Heart & originality in spades.
The original XeSS paper also has a denoising part. Which didn't end up in the product Intel is selling currently.
And ExtraSS is sorta open source. I have taken a look and it's promising
My 4k tv has VRR but isnt 120hz, does it matter to use this option then with Starfield? As this tv is smaller then my regular 4k tv which I prefer gaming on as it is bigger
These thumbnails are getting increasingly obnoxious.
They remind me of stills from the movie "A Vampire Kiss" with Nicolas Cage. Which is to say, that I enjoy them. They build up suspense, add some necessary drama. I half-expect some kind of a disturbing revelation in the episode based on those shocked faces. Will Nvidia finally proclaim themselves to be a sovereign nation? Does Amd plan on invading Taiwan? Has Microsoft annexed Japan? And, to my utter and bespoke disbelief, none of that is actually true. It's just some switch 2 rumours and impressions from using Steam Deck Oled. And perhaps that is for the better.
The fact that Starfield is getting an uncapped framerate mode is going to make benchmarking the next Xbox platform soooooo damn easy. It's a ways off, but I look forward to seeing that comparison video when it drops 2 to 4 years from now.
and in 15 years when they get gyro and vr.

Assuming they ever invest in those. It may never become necessary.

Or be able to quantify exactly how much of a generational leap the next consoles are if that "biggest generational leap ever" quote surprisingly turns out to be true.
Either or.

Yo - I need that BTILC vest Alex is sporting!
Those "above DX12" VRS features have been in DX12 for a while now. Please refer to the ATG's video "Variable Rate Shading Update Xbox Series Consoles"
DF kinda misses the main reason why this console gen is so slow; not enough good games. There is not a single ps5 or xhox series game that pushes hardware sales right now. No GTA (yet), no elder scrolls, no current gen COD or BF games. The best thing to come out for this gen so far is the matrix demo.
They've mentioned it often....you are just hearing what you want to hear
Not enough good games _that are arbitrarily held hostage on the console_
A switch 2 with greatly improved VR would be cool.
Ooo, can't wait to try the Resident Evil PT on my 7600
PS5 pro GPU will be similar to rtx 3080 in terms of teraflops. Should We expect similar performance?
well in raster performance a 3080 is like 6900XT or 7800XT level and a PS5 Pro GPU will be around 7700XT performance or a bit higher, but in ray tracing PS5 Pro will be much better than the RDNA 2-3 graphic cards, so i wouldnt be surprised if the Pro had the same performance or more than the 3080 in ray tracing.
Oh and the raster performance difference between a 7700XT and a 3080 is about 20%, so the difference wont be too big either way.
The PS5 Pro actually has more compute units than the 7700XT, but its held back by memory bandwith and power and thermal limits imposed by the APU (CPU and GPU combo) so its not expected to be much faster.
@@gabor3432 ok. Thanks
Tflops console are not Tflops PC's GPU. They are based on 2019 APU architecture (embedded small GPU capabilities with CPU mobile type), so stop comparing that to PC's GPU. It's better to compare console with console. Also do not compare it to a very powerful high-end 2023 RTX 3080. If you want the true power of a PS5 Pro, consider a 2019 RTX2060 or 2016 GTX1070ti, RX Vega 11 maybe.
I'd say more like 7700XT/3070Ti level in raster. RT may be a bit above that however
@@gabor3432 no, 2019 APU cannot compete with a dedicated hardware GPU, 2023 nvidia 3000 series. Guys, you are dreaming. Better comparing with mid-end PC from the year 2017-2019. PS5 Pro still has this small 2019 Zen 2 APU, AMD is about to release the Zen 5 this year... 3 AMD Zen generations difference ! just be a bit realistic ! 😅
AMD's decline in gaming revenue is a clear indication that we are headed into a recession which we have seen from all game devs too.
Well there's two considerations:
1) everything is overly expensive.
2) there's little reason to upgrade because there haven't really been giant leaps in the tech.
My GPU is 5000 series and runs pretty much everything I have very well. I already have an Xbox and a PS5, and people who wanted those consoles likely have them by now. These products aren't the kind of thing you have to replace, they get one sale per person/household.
@@echoshatter I think AMD has been pretty competitive in terms of pricing. I agree that there’s not much to be gained visually by upgrading but games do run better on new hardware. The consoles get updates that keep them running better over time but pc video cards sometimes can lose 30-40% of their raw performance just for being old when playing a game.
Excellent vid chaps. One thought on DLSS on the Switch - all these performance figures are based on a particular chip with a particular performance profile. With the presumed level of custom work (and therefore money) going into the Switch 2 with Samsung & Nvidia; it's reasonable to think that Nintendo might be getting a more modern part that's got more oomph specifically for AI workloads. As I understand it, DLSS2 performs better on a 4xxx vs a 2xxx based purely on the architecture difference, so I suspect those frame times will not be the same on the final hardware.
It is Nintendo, though, so I guess anything's possible.
Hello everybody! Quick question please: I game on an LG C1. My question is; does Boost Mode (under Game Optimizer) activate in Stellar Blade's BALANCED mode?
How is 2hrs leaner?
The Starfield update looks ideal for a more powerful console.
I hope all future Bethesda games feature this level of settings flexibility.
@tronam, those are usually set last because they take time to optimize. They rather be on a schedule that's consistently moving devs to new situations or next projects.
It would be cool of there was an update that made exploration feel free and seemless. One that removed the loading screens.
@@tronamBethesda I am sure takes note, and only promises bugged and broken.
Whats really annoying is when mods drop to deactivate certain lighting or lower it with uncapped frame rate it will run at 60fps anyway. I had Skyrim running at 60fps on Xbox One by adding lower setting for street lights and uncapped frame rate and it felt smooth for 90% of the game
Well decoupling fps from logic is something that is done, but you can probably count the amount on your hands and toes.
I absolutely 100% play with the settings on my console. My PS5 is set at 1440p Res the Crappy HDMI 2.1 VRR(Mark Cerny SUCKs for that one) is On and HDR is set to Supported only ect ect.. the first thing I do when I start a video game is getting to the settings on the video game itself(Visual/Audio). My console setting are good then I might adjust the Game Mode settings on my LG C1..
The gaming Industry is dying cause of the focus on Games-as-a-DISservice Online multiplayer Garbage..
I'm not Sold on the PS5 Pro. What games are going to make it worth it and I don't see the hardware really worth the buy
PS5 pro cash grab that's the whole point
@@subjectivereviews Well yea I agree but there will be people out there that will jump on it an Start having the placebo effect to justify their buy..
They(PlayStation/Xbox whoever) can up the GPU all they want. Hell they can put a 4090 equivalent in it but I won't make a ton of difference if the CPU is still about the same(10% boost isn't really nothing but maybe 1 or 2 frames) and the Power draw isn't much better. I think PS5 is 350W max. So a PS5 Pro would least have to have 400+W. But I think the PS5 Pro Power draw is still going to be the same.
Now the PS5 has great/Good I/O throughput/ an VRAM with 12GB for Graphics out of 16GBs(SDRAM in consoles). Developers have proven you can make a great beautiful game on PS5.. What I think was stupid and again MARK CERNY SUCKS for this was putting only Basic crappy HDMI 2.1 VRR in the PS5.. Because it kills anything under 48fps witch is EVERY SINGLE GAME. So Graphics/Fidelity mode will ALWAYS Suck on PS5 with NO VRR
@RedPillAlways well honestly I just want well optimized games PS5 pro is totally irrelevant, theres so many pc gpus out there but games are just horribly optimised.
@subjectivereviews 100% behind you on that.. like I said developers have proven you can make a magnificent beautiful well played game on a PS5 with the right optimization. But alot of devs are just pushing things out incomplete and fixing it on the go.. So a PS5 Pro will end up the same way an possibly make the PS5 worse..
I still think Online Multiplayer an Games-as-a-DISservice GARBAGE has hurt the gaming industry more then benefited it. Like Digital is killing ownership. But that's just me.

What does any of it mean?
I agree with Oliver on consoles should stay as an easy setup and play kind of thing. I don't want to be changing twenty graphics settings on PS5, mainly because I am obsessive and a perfectionist so I end up waisting a ton of time testing out settings on PC and am always left disappointed in one way or another!
Elite thumbnail. 👌🏼
Hey DF might be a dumb question was wondering whether it COULD be possible for the PS5 Pro to play PS1,2,3 games via disc back compat? I wonder if the machine learning components would make that more accessible
Disk reading isn't the problem. It is the requirement of an emulator to run the game on the hardware.
I wish
My PS3 has problems and i still want to play those games
Another big consideration is for people who have VRR, but not an OLED, because VRR absolutely guts the HDR on my Full Array Sony, so it's just not worth it at all. Still love the options for 40hz or 120fps when they crop up though!
