- Players and fans celebrated history after Athletic Bilbao beat Mallorca 4-2 on penalties to win their 24th Copa del Rey title and their first since 1984 - ending a 40-year trophy drought in a nerve-wracking final in Seville.
"There’s real pride in representing a community like Athletic," said one fan. Bilbao are the fourth oldest Spanish club and among three never to be relegated, alongside Real Madrid and Barcelona, while staying loyal to their unique philosophy of only fielding players of Basque origin. "This is one more dream I've fulfilled. I've dreamt about this moment so many times," said Basque-born winger Nico Williams.

No es así exactamente la filosofía. En el Athletic juegan jugadores de otras zonas de España, hay muchos navarros y sin ir más lejos han fichado a un jugador del Braga portugués que es madrileño. La filosofía dice, JUGADORES FORMADOS EN LO QUE ELLOS LLAMAN EUSKAL HERRIA. país vasco, navarra y una zona del país Vasco de Francia. Tú puedes ser canadiense y si estás formado en esa zonas puedes jugar, como tan han hecho otros extranjeros como Amorebieta (Venezuela) lizarazu y Laporte (Francia)

Is it really a 40yr trophy drought? Thought they won a spanish trophy against barcelona during prime Aduriz era.
It was the Supercopa, a relatively "small" trophy... So yes, first major trophy in 40 years
Super Copa is not as prestigious as Copa or Liga or any European competition (Europa League and Champions), however, with the new Supercopa format Champions and runner ups of Copa and Liga, could be very interesting, In the last one Athletic Club beat Barça on a thursday and Real Madrid two days later..... That is quite an achievement!

@@carlosruiz7104 sigue siendo un buen trofeo, en 2015 ya hablablan de sextete los del Barça y se comieron un 4-0, y en 2021 el Athletic tuvo que eliminar al Madrid y después ganarle al Barça en la final. El prestigio de los trofeos ganados también se mide por la manera en la que los ganas, y en ambas ocasiones fueron muy bonitas

They are called "Rey de copas", until recently they were the team with more copas del rey trophies, but they were recently surpassed by barsa (still ahead of Madrid).
The last time they won the trophy was 40 years ago.
Super cup it is indeed a trophy but here in Spain we have 2 major tournaments: liga and cup…others are minor trophies…I assume in England is similar for someone who wins the charity shield only
