Hello and welcome to episode 102 of the Kit & Krysta Podcast! We're joined today by a very special guest - former Nintendo employee, video game narrative designer and our friend Alexa Ray Corriea. We're going to have a chat with Alexa about what it's like inside Nintendo when the crushing pressure of the fan community just gets to be too much. We've all lived through this and we're pretty sure Nintendo is dealing with it right now with all speculation swirling around Switch 2. Alexa also shares what it means to be a narrative designer and writer for video games. We're all going to learn together. We also talk about games we are playing including Palworld. Yes, we are playing Palworld. In our news section we share our thoughts about the Xbox Developer Direct and some of the games they announced. We wrap it all up with a handful of questions from our wonderful Patreon subscribers.

Alexa is hands down my favorite guest on the podcast so far! Please bring her back again!
Petition for Alexa to be a recurring member of the K&K army please!! I love her insight, her jokes, I especially loved how well all of you got along!
Yeah, I agree. Loved her!
Alexa is awesome. Hope to see her return again. :)
WIAT WAIT WAIT, your first month on the job was not only an E3, but a SMASH BROS E3? And I thought I had it rough starting my first job on Black Friday… good God.
this was an awesome episode for real and alexa is so damn funny 😭🙏
you can tell she definitely loosened K&K up and the entire show just felt like two hours of shooting the breeze with your friend/coworker 😂
please bring her back sometime!
There were actually same sex romance options in Fire Emblem: Fates. Male Corrin could marry Niles in Conquest and Revelation. Female Corrin could marry Rhajat in Birthright and Revelation. On Tom Nook, he unfairly receives a bad reputation. He clearly explains how much your house will expand and how much it will cost. You don’t have any minimal payments or any payment schedules. You pay off the loan however you see fit. You could even not pay it off at all if you didn’t want any other expansions. Tom Nook will never send you a letter demanding payment or threaten to foreclose your home. He is the most benign money lender.
Everything Alexa was awesome, but I particularly liked 59:35 to 1:08:03 (and then the questions & answers following that). I had no idea how writers' and narrative directors' work looks like. This is my favorite kind of Kit & Krysta content; I think your interviews are all invaluable.
Also, 52:12 to 54:09... these behaviors towards women in this industry (and many other industries) need to stop... it's embarrassing
Alexa was such an amazing guest, loved her vibe and her experience. Hope you had a nice lunch! 😂🎉
Lunch was 🔥
Thank you for always being so candid and transparent not only with your discussions about the industry but with your time with Nintendo. In all honesty, a number of those things don't surprise me at all. Also, Alexa you are awesome!✨
Of course it's not surprising! Nintendo the company is every corporate trope out there. And Nintendo fans are the absolute worst in the community
This episode was so refreshing! Hearing Alexa's horror stories from Nintendo was so funny and surreal.
I'd love to hear more stories from people who worked at Nintendo! I think I vaguely remember the Tom Nook tweet and wondering how crazy it was Nintendo approved that tweet, only to find out _years_ later (AKA just now) that... they didn't.
15:57 I think Alexa got away with a cuss word there 😂
Alexa is a super likable person, I’d be curious to ask her what she thinks about the story in Tears of the Kingdom, in terms of game writing, how the NPCs don’t remember you, how there’s no linear progression in it, etc. also because she said she hates the time travel trope lol.
It's very validating to hear about the first person game motion sickness because I absolutely feel that too and my friends can not understand it at all if I try to explain it to them...
You should interview Perrin Kaplan. She's awesome and would really contribute to the show. She was at Nintendo during really interesting times.
15:55 first curse word on Kit & Krysta? I like her!
I too get motion sickness when playing some games ! So it's great to know that I am not alone❤
Her Anxious shirt is such a mood and I love it
Alexa was such a natural and Amazing guest! Loved the episode. Thank you. 😊
There is a tweet from Sara Weeda, the singer for A Step Away (the jail song) and Where We Belong (the ending scene song), and she acknowledges how she's given us the perfect blend of awe and depression.
I remember Alexa from the Polygon days, I didn't even recognize her until you mentioned it. Great to see her again, always loved her videos back over at Polygon!
The best era of WGG was, in my humble opinion, when Alexa was a co-host. I miss her so much as a podcaster. Her energy, her way with words, her boundless enthusiasm. It’s just awesome. Thank you so much for having her on. I feel like something in me that lay dormant for a long time just awakened once again after hearing her voice again. Thank you guys for having her on and thank you for this awesome podcast. You just earned a new subscriber ❤
Alexa was such a great guest on the podcast! I loved her energy and her sincerity about the game industry. It was great the way she blended in with your guys’ conversation and I would love to see her come back another time :)
Lots to go over in today’s episode! Here’s to hearing from the two of you and Alexa. 😁
Alexa is an awesome guest! Bring her around more often. These stories are so entertaining!
I think things are slowly changing as social attitudes change (for better or worse), but having lived through gaming in the 90's and 2000''s, Nintendo has historically been against anything that could possibly drive controversy and lower sales of their products. Nintendo was always the "safe for kids toy".
Anecdotally, my aunt, a VERY Catholic woman, was very strict with the content my younger cousin consumed. He was only ever to play games rated E, and only allowed to play anything rated T until he was about 16, and even then, that was strictly regulated. Rated M games were flat out banned, and while he managed to smuggle in a Tales of Symphonia when he was younger or a Resident Evil 4 from time to time (they live in a VERY Catholic community in Louisiana), it goes to show that parents do care, and Nintendo wanted to make sure they weren't on the wrong side of that. I'm sure there'll be more than a few replies tearing into "how backwards and ignorant that is!" or "that's not what I experienced growing up!" (neither did I), but it is what it is.
In regards to fandoms, Nintendo was, like most companies, completely blindsided when it came to The Internet, social media, content creators, and viral marketing altogether. I definitely think the leash is a bit tight, but as long as fans aren't making smut, fangames that misrepresent the identity/quality/whatever of a game series, or worse yet, try to monetize it, then they probably wouldn't care?
This was such an amazing interview, please bring Alexa again
My heart grows larger with the Justin McElroy shoutout
Inching closer to a Kit and Krysta MBMBAM crossover.
Alexa is definitely one of our favorite guest stars in the podcast! Thanks for sharing your experience and she did got away with something there lol.
I love when the guests come on because the potential for spicy language goes up 1000%
Krysta being Krysta “I hate labo cause is Not Cinematic like my GOW in my PS5”🙃
I always really love hearing different perspectives from former employees.
Also "Markie [capital] MAN 64" made me giggle in the 1up club graduation.
Y'all have the best guests on this show. Alexa was so funny!
A lot of these nitpicky fussy shenanigans from Nintendo are things I've suspected all along but it's great to get that insider confirmation of 'Yes, actually, they WERE that ridiculous and you only know the half of it.'
Like, I know they're also a great company to work for in other regards (especially these days with all of these layoffs etc) but yea, they're still a corporation and have their weaknesses and downsides.
Game writers are the most under appreciated in the industry
Sidon was in LOVE with link
I’m just at the part now. I’m stopping to post this. I’m truly sorry to hear what you had to face Alexa as it hurt then, and it hurts now. I’m a silent Kit and Krysta viewer, but I think I can speak for us all and say we all feel for you and never like to hear about such things. You truly are a professional and deserve nothing but praise. So again, from all of us, even though it may not be needed, the best of luck to you and may you never have to face such harsh things again.
This was so fun and Alexa is a great guest!
I also felt seen talking about motion sickness especially the unpredictability of it; thank YOU.
For SV
The lore was good
The writing was good
The music was good
The vibes were good
The messages were good
The character designs were good
Tom Nook is not a money grubbing con artist, he's my homie
Tom Nook gets under deserved hate just a simple tanooki making a business.
Awesome interview! Learned a lot from Alexa's experiences.
33:59 im here for the SidLink
Great guest! Now, like her shirt, I too am anxious. 😰
Kit & Krysta, I freakin love y’all!!!
Palworld looks super interesting but it Ik's me out in certain ways that i'm really not into.
We've hit an age of pushing acceptable boundaries and I have a really low tolerance for feeling like my "Evil acceptance" is being shifted.
Good and wholesome, or at least close, for me or I'm out.
Such a cool guest! I wish her the best and hope she returns soon! ✌🏼✨
1:59:30 Omg as soon as I heard the question of what was the first video game to make you cry I said to myself Kingdom Hearts 1 and I was so happy when I heard Alexa say the same thing! Although I didn't cry when the door closed between Riku and Sora, I cried when Sora and Kairi said goodbye and the land they were standing on started drifting. The whole point of Sora's adventure was for him to find and reunite with friends while fighting the darkness and once he finally beats the darkness and "reunites" with his friends, he's forced to leave them again to go fight the darkness. I was like 10 or 11 and I just lost it there. I truly did not know video games could make you feel something like that. God damn it, I love Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 ... I wish the story stopped there lol.
Edit: I'll add to this since it was fun. The second game to make me cry was 2018's Marvels Spider-Man. Obviously, the ending with Peter and Aunt May was so beautiful and heart braking at the same time. Peter had to sacrifice his entire world in order to save it.
And my third and so far last game to make me cry or at least shed some tears was the ending of Scarlet and Violet. I know, I know, controversial take. I'm one of the 2 people that actually like the game but I thought it ended so beautifully. The entire time Arven thought his parent was alive, we go to Area Zero, find out they've been gone for a long, LONG time. Then at the end when we leave Area Zero, Arven clearly sad, the whole gang tries their best to cheer him up and it works! And then the ending song plays and it catches me so off guard. Ahhh, I love that cast and game! (I know it looks ugly and runs bad, don't bully me pls)
Really great video as always. A running theme throughout the "Kit and Krysta oeuvre" is a desire to return to being just a fan due to the fact that being involved in production shifts your relationship with each game. This is going to sound incredibly pretentious, but it reminds me of the desire to "return to innocence" that we all have.
Personally, I actually feel the opposite. I think it really stinks to be relegated to being just a consumer and an outsider; the ultimate honor as a fan of something is to be able to actually contribute to its creation.
Also, as someone under 30, I definitely care about Indiana Jones. Lego Indiana Jones really created a lot of fans for the series.
36:39 nothing was approved without miyamoto’s say so
Nintendo has been more open about stuff recently
What Alexa said about Final Fantasy IX was so poignant to me. I would have cried if not playing with my brother. I'm replaying it now; it's one of the only games I will replay.
33:40 eionuma did say he leaves totk upto player interpretation
Alexa’s the best! I’ve loved her since Polygon and she was a part of the What’s Good Games podcast with Andrea Rene & Brittney Brombacher!
Fantastic interview
2:03:18 THAT'S AN IMPORTANT DETAIL TO THIS STORY LMAO
Also, what an amazing guess, truly a 10/10 episode. I hope to see her again in the future.
I loved this episode so much!! So interesting and fun! 😊 5 star podcast, always! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Y'all have to bring Alexa back, she's hilarious! I love these past Nintendo employee reunions!!
So glad i got to see the face behind the tom nook tax refund tweet!!! That was awesome.
Alexa has been the best and my favorite guest on the podcast. Please invite her back anytime.
Alexa was awesome!
This was a great episode! Bring Alexa on again!
Great guest!! Loved every minute. Yay tumblr users. :3 So interesting to hear the limited resources offered to make tweets in hopes of them going viral. This really gave us a new feel of what it felt like working at Nintendo for someone else, the struggles of other parts of the gaming industry, but also just another fun new voice to hear! (: She'd be fun to see come back too!
The thumbnails are getting amazing.
This was a really good one!
15:57 is that the first swear word in the podcast? Lol
😂 💩
I would love to see the Pentiment team tackle Krysta's concubine game idea. Could be really cool!
Great Episode :) would also love to see Samantha Robertson in a future one!
I mean the way they handle fan pressure is simply by not listening and not doing anything they want them to do.
Hearing about how this person got into the industry is very interesting, but demoralising, considering how hard it is to do anything in the writing world these days. Different jobs, different times, different challenges :) Good for her tho
very amazing ep. I really loved Alexa's perspective, learned a lot. PLUS i really want that kirsta game about the chinese dramas PLEASE I NEED ITTTT
This might be a controversial take but I think people that work on a gaming company, should not have social media. Purely to save your mental health.
In general people shouldnt have "social" media....
This is a message from the future. Today it was confirmed that Keanu Reeves will be voicing Shadow in Sonic 3. 🤣
I wasn't expecting Mushroom Kingdom Undies in my KK video lol.
ALEXA IS SO FUNNY I'M CRYING😭😭😭
The fictional world to live in is whatever your favorite Star Wars planet is. I say this because then with the technology they have you can visit any planet you want when you need a change of scenery.
Please bring Alexa back! This episode was awesome!
Hope you have Alexa on again! She was so sweet and fun!
I respect Palworld, even though there’s some flaws in it but as a Pokémon fan, I’m greatly disappointed in these people getting out of control of this nonsense. Not a fan of this game but no hate towards the fans of Palworld.
I love your hoodie! I need one 😅
That hoodie Kit is wearing is fire! Where can I get one? 😂
The section should've been called "Alexas's Labo PTSD Adventures."
she was a great guest, what an interesting conversation. she should come as a guest once per quarter =D
Alexa was awesome!! Get episode!!
33:40 they’re perfectionists so I get why they wanna control it
I see both sides
A lot of PLA was inspired by PMD
The tesla game she described should be called
Truths of T(esla)
I like that talking crap about "The Rings of Power" can lead you to a job
“It’s not an elephant it’s a pal” 🤣🤣🤣💀💀💀
Hope those bad moments at Nintendo were few and far between I’ve heard Nintendo takes good care of their employees
We always knew Nintendo was strict
Head bobbing in first-person games is what gives me motion sickness. Be nice if some of these games have the option to turn it off 😊😊😊
Yokai watch with guns. Sounds like the perfect idea!
As soon as she said the cod game was Vanguard it was an instant "oh no"
Great episode! I think Nintendo will not reveal neither MP4 nor Switch 2 this Direct and I hope they will announce the new console after the end of the fiscal year!
Wonder how different NoJ would be working there it’s got a 98% positive retention right idk
Alexa was great!
Kit, I just NEED to know where I can get that Brewster hoodie PLEASE
1:18:16
I never comment, but I want to be Alexa's friend lol; she is such a vibe!
Right! So down to earth!
What I really liked about Alexa was that she seemed like a normal person, not an employee. She felt real.
R you sure about that 😂
@@kamuilasia5813 What do you mean?
SORIKU NATION!
Not going to accept the Tom Nook slander, he gives you a house, a loan with no interest and no payment deadlines PLUS he gives you a job to pay it off.
It's fascinating to find out what Nintendo Japan has a problem with lol
