Mitch is so ridiculously comfortable in his mix voice, (no, those highs weren't even in head voice, they were mix). At this point I think he actually has two voice boxes. He hits high notes like it's nothing!

Mitch is absolutely awesome. It's not just that he can go super-high - that's a rare talent in itself - it's that he can do it with the clarity of tone and sheer POWER he puts behind it. Many men who can 'sing' falsetto can only do it by going up into a head voice that softens and lightens the notes; Mitch, being a counter-tenor, can use 'mixed-voice' for many of those notes (that's a combination of head and chest voice, so you retain the tone and power of chest voice, but still achieve the clarity of a head voice falsetto.) He's a rare treasure, for sure.

  • @dianad3080

Mitch definitely showed out in this performance. However, I think Kevin is so underrated in this (probably because he isn't seen in this video as he was putting away his cello "Beyonce) after his solo and rejoined them standing on the other side of Scott) but can definitely be heard. His beatboxing was so complex and on point in this. Thanks for this reaction. Looking forward to more PTX. 😊

One of the reasons we don't usually suggest this one right off the bat, is that it is very focused on only two of the singers - bass man Avi at the beginning, and of course, Mitch. And many reactors go - "Where's Kevin???" (beatboxer), who unfortunately never shows up on this phone video. He is actually standing next to Scott the whole time on the right, during the Aha! part. You can hear all his crazy beats and whooshes and rattles, but we never get to see him. Anyway, loved your reaction, and that you didn't talk over the singing and stopped it when you talked. They have 3 Grammys. Daft Punk (1st) Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy (2nd and underrated in my opinion) and Jolene with Dolly Parton (3rd)
    Quick notes:
Avi was the bass until 2017. He is a true basso profundo. Matt took over from there. His voice is like velvet.
Scott (tall blonde) baritone and sings bass when Avi or Matt are taking the lead.
Mitch - counter tenor. He changes his look a LOT!
Kirstie (rhymes with thirsty) mezzo soprano
Kevin - he is a beast! He is the beatboxer but is an internationally recognized musician on both the cello and sax). He went to Yale. He is fluent in Mandarin. He deferred Yale Medical School to audition with them on The Sing Off.

So far as I know, at least on video, this is the pinnacle of Mitch. He was at the absolute top of his game that night. This was his " I'm a diva and I'm going to own it " moment. From here on out he completely owns his voice, how high he can sing, and all the attitude that comes with being Mitch.
As for talking during the videos...don't worry about it. When you feel something, when you just have to say it, when you've got to let it out like you do? THAT'S what we come here for! We WANT your reaction. We WANT to hear what you think, how you feel, and what you're experiencing. We've already done all of this, those of us who have been long time Pentatonix fans. What we're looking for is to relive our own journey through the eyes of someone just starting it. And, when you're hearing things we've listened to a million times before for the first time, we're getting just that. Never try to be anything other than who you are. If that means talking during the video, so be it. Most of we Pentaholics will come and watch anyway.
If you're looking for an under-reacted-to gem for a future video, I would suggest finding their cover of "When Love Takes Over" with Natalie Weiss. It's an oldie, but a goodie. Lots of fun to watch Natalie during that performance.
Thank you for doing these videos for us. Watching someone else start their Pentatonix journey is always SO much fun.

I think you would enjoy the Pentatonix's journey on the sing off? It is really worth the journey to see them grow and from great to outstanding to phenomenal in just a few short months! They were so very young and had really just met as a group! You get a real sense of who they are and how prophetic the judges comments were because it really is what they became!
If you choose to react to those videos watch from the beginning with a pre interview showcasing how they put together their arrangements each week and how they worked as a team all the way to the end after the judges comments(which are amazing) for a post interview with pentatonix on how they felt the their performance went!

Yeah, I like the name pentafry, they were the Sing Off winners in 2011 and Home Free won the Sing Off the following season. Watching those are great because you can see how much Pentatonix grew, Home Free had been doing circuits around the country for awhile, they are a bit older. After Home Free won I think they got out of a rut and decided they could be better and proved it. There is going to be a lot of a cappella groups coming your way, so keep those headphones handy; not to mention a lot of info coming your way. My info is we will listen to any you want to react to plus their Christmas songs anytime of year.

I've watched more reactions than I care to at times. 99 percent of reactors talk over Mitch's solo portions in videos or they stop the video and don't rewind to hear him. PO's me to no end and I let every single reactor know they don't get the full appreciation of Mitch. I think it's a pattern for all of them because they do watch each others reactions and stop the videos closely with other reactors.

It is very hard for me in many songs to not have the phrase "damn it, Mitch!" roll through my head at least once....Mitch is amazing, they all are! Personal favorite songs are Cheerleader, Love Again, Come Along, Say Something.... dang, I could almost list any that I have watched or heard..... :)

He's a counter/contra tenor and not all is falsetto as some people believe. His vocal cords are short or thin therefore his vocal range is high before he even goes into any falsetto.

Daft Punk, Sounds of Silence, Mary Did You Know, Imagine, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies --- And the Sing Off is the show Pentatonix was on one season and Home Free was on another season --- Well worth watching both seasons.

Love your enthusiasm. Their completely accapella version of Bohemian Rhapsody amazing and Sound of Silence stuns me every time I watch it. Welcome to PTX. I look for new reactions to their videos every day. Can't stop. Truly a Pentaholic, lol. Eager to see what you choose next!

Everyone reccomends the Daft Punk medley because they won their first of three grammys for that medley. I think you will be impressed with the beyonce, Michael Jackson and other medleys because they are done in one take and recorded live. I dont think you could pick a bad PTX song. Home Free and Pentatonix both competed in The Sing Off. You can check out those to see how far they have come in almost a decade since they were on the show.

Love how excited you get, go ahead and let the reaction flow. Just a couple bits of information you should know. Kiristin has Broadway credits and had the female lead in Kinky Boots for a time. And so you don't think Kevin is just a beat boxer extraordinaire you should know he is the over achiever of the group. He plays Cello, Piano, and Saxophone all at concert levels. He graduated premed from Yale, spent over a year in China where he learned to speak Chinese. He sings Tenor but vocals were not his strong suite so he worked with other band members and a vocal coach until while on tour he would perform the featured vocals in "if i ever fall in love" originally done by guest artist Jason Derulo for the album and video. He also writes and produces music both individually and for the group.

Watching someone discover PTX and say I'm not sure if they will be as good as Home Free.......then watching them eat crow later......it's becoming the standard! hahaha! Both groups are great friends, there is no need to compare or pick a favorite, they are both amazing! This is a rabbit hole you will be glad you went down, welcome to the family!

Also, Avi (the bass) is not a run of the mill baritone/bass. He’s an operatically trained basso profundo. They are not common and he has cultivated his instrument wonderfully! And music runs through his veins. It’s amazing.

I didn’t realize this video was up when I commented on your last. So happy to see the headphones lol.

OH MY GOSH! I LOVE YOUR ENERGY! They are amazing! And the 2 groups are very different! Both fantastic! I like your name for a fan base also! PENTAFRY! That's good. I see you were kinda speechless there...that happens a lot. Did you notice that Kirstin and Scott (the tall blond guy) did the harmony where one was singing 2nd and 4th notes, the other was singing the 1st and 3rd notes? They studied 5 part harmonies. That takes some concentration....! Esp. to bring it together and sound so good with the bass and high notes..You will probably have to hear the song a few times to fully appreciate it. Or maybe that is just me....LOL Peace to you and God bless. Oh, Please react to Daft Punk...I think you will be amazed.

The rumor is they do sometimes watch reactions. Now, for perspective, watch the official video they put out for Aha. It has a 'ghost story' vibe, I think you will like it. The grin on your face says it all. That will be your reaction to about 89.4 % of their videos. The other 10.6 % will have you crying. You are going to be great!

Looking forward to more PTX reactions. 😊

In case no one has done this for you yet:
Pentatonix won the 3rd season of The Sing-Off in 2011, the year before Home Free won. They've won 3 grammy's so far, their first one being for their Daft Punk medley which they recorded in a closet, filmed in Avi's kitchen, and hired a friend to film and edit their video, all on a $400 budget. This was after they were dropped from the record deal that they won for winning the show.
    Now, for the members:
AVI/MATT- Bass. A cool thing to note is that Avi can sing overtones, which means he can sing two notes at once. Here's a video of him doing it in several different instances. czcams.com/video/MmIJC65VWYk/video.html
SCOTT- Baritone. He has quite the vast vocal range. He takes the bass line when the usual bass is singing the lead (like in Hallelujah, for example) and can also sing tenor (a higher male register).
MITCH- Countertenor. It is the highest male adult singing voice. Like Scott, he has a ridiculous range. He used to be shy about his voice because kids made fun of him in school for it, but he eventually fully embraces it.
KIRSTIE- Mezzo soprano. This means her voice is in between a contralto (the lowest female singing voice) and a soprano (the highest female singing voice). Many of the high notes you hear are actually Mitch, not Kirstie. She usually stays in the alto/lower soprano range unless she or Mitch are singing the lead.
KEVIN- Beatboxer/Cellist. He can also sing really well. I've heard that the PTX members have argued that Kevin can sing the highest of them all.

      @ProudAmerican1829 Před 3 lety

The incredible thing about Pentatonix (that I rarely find in any other band/group) is that because of both their music arranging prowess and the incredible and ridiculous overlap in their vocal ranges, there's never a voice or chord note missing when any one of them takes the lead. There's always someone to fill it. They aren’t stuck in a specific range, which is awesome. They have the versatility and freedom to be able to choose the best singer for each part depending on the style of song and what they're going for in the tone.
