🚲 Custom 3000W BMX E-Bike [45MPH!] - Part 6 - Final Build! Finishing Touches, Speed Run, Test Ride!

- Building an insane (stupid!) custom DIY 3000W [3KW!] 45MPH BMX ebike! In part 6 we finally finish the entire build. We do have a few small things to finish up, but after that I can take it on a speed run, test ride and show it off in all it's glory! This is only the 4th e-bike I have made so far and I'm still learning a lot so I'll show you all of the mistakes I made along the way.
I got the bag patches from this company: www.mutinyshop.com/ - not sponsored, I just like their service.
Fortunately this build went quite a bit smoother than the digi-camo ebike build.

\\ BMX E-Bike [4.0] \\
I wasn't really planning on making another ebike so quickly, but my coworker gave me this BMX bike so I figured I could turn it into a grocery getter to save from having to drive my car to the local store. I also wasn't planning on spending so much time on this build, but every time this happens I keep improving small things until the entire project has taken up so much time!
BMX bikes will always have a soft spot in my heart, growing up as a very young kid I used to rent "RAD" on VHS all the time, with 12 year old dreams of taking a young Aunt Becky to the prom where we would do freestyle tricks in the gym while 'Send Me An Angel' ( • Real Life - Send Me An... ) blasted over the PA - if you didn't grow up in the 80's you're sorely missing out!
This definitely isn't a guide, maybe something more to inspire you to create your own. However I will be making 'how to' and 'how to do' tutorials on how to make an ebike from start to finish in future videos.
\\ Parts \\
1. The frame
This is actually a cheap Walmart BMX bike, it only costs about $90-100 and it's actually not that bad at all. It has a cool front brake system that allows you to turn the bars all the way around without twisting up the brake cables! Nothing special here really, just a traditional steel frame.
2. The motor
I got this kit off AliExpress, it's a 72V 2000W motor kit. I really wanted an LCD display and the controller this kit came with did not have a display, so I asked the seller if I could get one that did have it, and they said they would make me a custom kit with a different (more powerful) controller that had a display. It did cost a little bit more, but it is totally worth it to me.
3. The controller
This is an upgraded 50A controller with a LCD (IPS) display, I believe the controller that came with this kit is only 30A or 40A, using this 50A controller pushes the output to a whopping 3500W!!!
4. The battery
I found this battery pack on eBay, I thought the packaging was the perfect dimensions for this frame as there is not a whole lot of room for almost any components given how tiny this frame is. I later realized that this 'pack' was actually just a series of 6 smaller packs, it does have 60A output, but had I know that this was configured this way, I probably would have went with a different pack as I did have to modify a lot of the wiring to make it cleaner and more robust.

I can watch these kinds of videos for hours...and props to you that you are not showing only the rosy successes but als also when things are not going according to plan...and also very pleasantly narrated...thumbs up from me 👍🏻
Thanks so much man, I really appreciate it! Thank you for watching and commenting and the positivity. Cheers brother 🍻
dude thats mastery level! this build is so cool!!! watching the 6parts was a treat! thx for the content man, appreciate your perseverance and problem solving and improving attitude seeing that helps me go through my frustration during certain builds...anyways can't like more!!
Thank you so much man, it really means a lot 🙏 Thank you for watching the whole series too! Yes, always at least some problems when building, it's very rare everything just works out (but sometimes it does!) Just have to keep pressing on even when things get very frustrating, and I try to show that because it happens to everyone even people who have been building forever. Thanks again for the positivity and feedback!
“It doesn’t have a suspension” LOL
"I am the suspension" 😎🍻
From part one until completion I enjoyed every minute of watching you go to work and create a truly awesome Ebike. Great attention to detail and you said your shooting for a 6 out of 10, well sir I'm giving you a 10 out of 10. All the very best and I appreciate your videos, creativity and your workmanship.
Thanks so much man, I really appreciate you watching the whole series and giving such an incredible comment and feedback! Truly, you so much!! I have a ton more ebike videos coming also!
I dont agree this is completely impractical! The speed, portability, maneuverability etc have many advantages over a larger ebike. I also imagine its 0-45mph is wildly very fast compared to most ebikes- the torque and acceleration could prove to be very handy in getting out of the way on the streets or making a light! =) Also the fact that you repurposed a bike that no doubt eventually would have ended up in a landfill and then buried into the planet is a huge sustainable feat! The repurpose of this walmart cheap bmx frame is arguably the most practical thing you could do from a recycling/ reduce waste standpoint. A very practical build! 🙂
It definitely was a lot of fun, which does go for something. I just mean in terms of maybe a bike more dedicated towards road riding, or one that is off road, cargo bike, etc. It is very compact which also has its advantages if you're taking a train or bus, it's much easier to store also. I appreciate your perspective and thanks for watching this series my friend 🍻🍻
You should check out my latest cargo ebike build as that bike frame I actually did find in the trash 😅
Seriously love the modern retro feel of this build, taking the extra time for the little things have really paid off, I've a huge soft spot for bmx's as that was my first bike style back in the 80's, lots of fond memories with them.
Thanks so much! Yes, same here - I grew up riding bikes everywhere as a kid, I love BMX bikes! I will be doing more BMX builds on my channel in the future.
You have shown us and build the best custom upgraded ebike I have ever seen in detail with your video's.. I will now take a chance on building one for myself , thanks 2023
Thanks so much man!
Awesome build quality. I like it. Thanks for sharing these videos.
Thanks so much for watching and commenting! Much appreciated 🙏
Great amazing build. Have been floating the idea of BMX build...thank you for the motivation, tips and ideas!
I think if you're thinking about it, it's worth doing. It's one of the funnest builds I've ever done. You definitely don't need 3KW though, maybe 1500W is more ideal, trust me you're not going to be wanting to go over 30 mph. 🍻 Thank you!

Paint only increases smoothness 👍
If you do another bmx build, try using an old school frame instead as they have more clearance for components. It looks an insane build 😎
Thank you!! I'll check those out for the next one, I'll probably end up making my own frame to house everything, but if I can use a different frame for most of it I will, thanks!!
Litterally doing this and found your video is a life saver and this is Pure GOLD . Thank you so much for all of your effort man ! 👏👏👏👏😇

@@hightech-lowlife thank you 🙏 😇 do the bike are wobbly at the top speed ? At what mph ?
@@munzirrafik7753 No, not really unstable or wobbly, BMX bikes will have you lower to the ground so you feel more planted 👍It's just pretty scary going over 30mph haha
@@hightech-lowlife glad to hear that ! Im puting big power motor on these estimately 68mph . Wonder how it goes on bmx as before we are using fiido q1 in a big community which the bike are not stable at top speed (wobble) because the mini bike fiido q1 is short frame (length ). So im trying to experiment convert it to my bmx haro . Sry for my bad english because im from Malaysia 🙏
@@munzirrafik7753 Yes, the tires on that scooter are very small I can't imagine it would be good for high speed. BMX is still a small bike but will be much more stable than that. You also have to be careful because these bicycle tires are not meant to go these speeds, if you are attempting to go much faster than 45 you might want to look into motorcycle (or real motor scooter) wheels and tires that are designed for high speed 👍 you will have a lot of fun with your conversion!

Without suspension that thing is dangerous ASF 😂
You don't have to go full speed all the time! 👍
Nice!
Thank you!!
Wanting to do this my self, I'm a bit nervous about wiring as I don't have any experience in wiring ANYTHING!
Would recommend buying a Chinese controller off alibaba/ebay etc, and battery and motor separately, or spending the extra money amd purchasing a kit?
Many thanks.
Your videos are brilliantly put together, LOVE this bike!
Thanks so much! Don't let the wiring scare you, it's actually pretty simple 👍 I would recommend just getting a kit with the motor + controller, you can get the battery separately (probably for cheaper), but getting the motor and controller in a kit will be easier in my opinion. Thanks so much, I will probably make an even more powerful BMX in the future also!
Great build!! Wow the effort and attention to detail! Now to go waaay overboard use Statorade (Ferro Fluid) in the motor and some heatsinks and you can pull almost double the Amps. Ferro Fluid help keep the hub cool. What is you range on those Hoverboard battery packs? 13.2Ah
Thanks man! I will be making a V2 of the EBMX and it will have 6KW + of power, so it will be double. I'm aware of ferro but I prefer to use motors that don't need additional cooling and can handle the heat 👍I believe the range on this was 20-40 miles depending on how you rode it.
@@hightech-lowlife 20miles on 13.2Ah is amazing with a 3k motor!! Good for you man. I'm starting a Hando eCub build next week. A classic cub café racer on E.

I'm imagining a glossy Royal blue, dual motor, 3 spoke, BMX bike. I'll brb...
Next E-BMX I make will be 2x the power of this one 👍
You should make a BMX e-bike brand where you can swap all your parts like how you made this! I would definitely buy one. I love the look of BMX rather then all the other weird looking e-bikes out. Plus its sleeper. Nobody would expect it to be an e-bike.
Thanks so much man! I'll definitely think about it 🤔 I appreciate the comment! I will do more BMX style bikes on here in the future also 👍
@@hightech-lowlife Fresh! Or maybe not an BMX e-bike brand maybe a BMX e-bike parts brand that would fit more of BMX bikes since it seems like now you know the size differences. @@fibesdigi Thanks so much man! I will keep it all in mind for sure, much appreciated!!

Thanks so much man!!
Could you make a Custom Stretched BMX Bike? (Like in that Robin Williams Movie, "Jack". But Electric, and with Big disc brakes)
Yeah, I think I could stretch a frame and put disc brakes on a bike. In my next project I'm actually making custom disc brake mounts because the frame never supported disc brakes 👍
Just a little FYI the next time you plan on sewing a rubber patch to some fabric.... Treat it like leather and pre-punch holes w/ a needle then use a double stitch to secure it, I've had rubber patches fall off bags before because of the way I stitched it.
Edit: I cannot believe that you used U-brakes on a 45mph ebike... I've smoked so many brake pads just bombing hills on my BMX, IDK if I'd use them on anything that goes faster than 30mph. LoL
Thanks, if I ever do another rubber patch I'll pre-punch the holes, that's a good idea!
I know! I thought these brakes were going to be total crap, but I'm actually really surprised as how well they work, and also they've been holding up for a while now. Someone said they are terrible in the rain (seems true) but I don't really ride in the rain so not a concern for me. Thank you!
@@hightech-lowlife - You're Very Welcome... I'm always trying to help people and give as much helpful information as possible. 😊 Yeah, I'd agree w/ not riding in the rain... It might not be bad on the motor but it will definitely bring up trust issues w/ rim brakes. LoL I've had a few close calls on my BMX just trying to race home in the rain... I slid about 20 feet sideways straight into traffic but luckily there was a gap between cars and they seen me coming, so I didn't get hit. 😅
I wish I could have a compact foldable ebike that could do about 35mph. Like a really unassuming thing that i can fold up and bring indoors. would it need a 1500w battery? And how would it fit on such a small bike? Especially when folded and stored away.
Totally doable, 1500W should get you to 35MPH roughly 👍
I think I want one
It's super fun!!
Looks good. I'd be a bit worried about the v brakes stopping 45 miles an hour.
They do pretty well! Majority of riding is 15-25MPH, although the brakes are the least scariest thing when doing 45MPH on this bike 🤯
wicked ;)
Thanks man!!
Amazing - I want to be able to just drop the bars and stick it upright in the back of my SUVee. But mine is really going to be a beater. And a tow-beast. 😏☢☢☢
Although I was planning the build, last week I found that exact same bike minus wheels and brakes, thrashed and saying "take me, build me, ride me." 💥😃💜 Teleology wins again.

@@hightech-lowlife mine hopefully dm on ig
How do you take off the speed limiter one of these?
For this controller there is a blue wire, when it's disconnected it's unrestricted. May be different for other controllers though 👍
the rear arm wide of my BMX is 110mm only ..seems not enought space for it .
Mine was too until I stretched it 👍Steel can easily do 10mm + of deflection on either side.

3000W (it's in the title of the video 😂) Kit is 500(ish) here: www.aliexpress.com/item/2251832082112160.html
So you charge at 72v and no issues 😁😁
That's correct!
You should be able to hit 52mph easily with a 3000w set up
For hub motors 3KW is about 45mph tops, for 50-55 you need 5-6KW. 👍
@@hightech-lowlife ah I forgot it's a hub motor, I'm using a chain drive motor running a 10t to 36t gearing on 20in wheels and with 3kw I'm getting around 52
@@MrJasenstewart97 Yes, with mid drive you can play around with the gear ratios for a higher top speed 👍at a certain point for hub motors power isn't the limiting factor, it's voltage. My 18KW build tops out at 60mph (72V), but the acceleration is unbelievable.
Can you please do a bmx with dual hubs and mid drive ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I could but what's the point, 3 motors, 3 batteries? BMX frames don't have a lot of room for things and that is just adding more components to try and fit 👍
Do you have pedal assist and does it work well on a bmx? I bought a leaf bike kit and my builder says bmx isn't really good for that... so my pedals just spin doing nothing.
I don't use PAS systems on any of my builds because I like having full control over the throttle at all times. It's more intuitive, feels better, and offers more real-time granular control over how much or how little assist I want.
If you are into PAS, I don't see why it would be any different on BMX vs MTB vs anything else - it's just a magnet that goes around your bottom bracket and sensor on your frame, if mounted correctly it should function just the same.
@@hightech-lowlife Thank you
@@simonwilson1810 No problem! I'm sure you can make it work, maybe that specific builder can't do it, but if you really want PAS with your BMX I'm sure it's possible to have it set up in the way you prefer 👍

What do you think is better about a more expensive frame? Materials? Welds? I haven't had any problems with durability, so where does the money go beyond a name brand? You could spend more on a 'designer' bmx bike than I did on this whole build! The real question is 'why' would someone do that?
