- Machining a spindle adaptor for a 1953 Wadkin RU sliding bed Lathe. Adaptor is 2-4 1/4 to 1 3/8-6 BSW ( British Standard Whitworth ) Thread.
The Lathe belongs to a friend of mine. It is one of his latest restorations.
A nice bit of British engineering of I guess the fifties. Used many Wadkin machines in my time. Circular saws, spindle routers, drill presses and over and under planers( you call them jointers in the states) The firm I served my apprenticeship with had a big old I think it was 16" wWadkin over and under planer, and it had a 15 HP motor. We only had 30 minutes for lunch in those days and when we switched it off at lunch time it was still rolling to a stop when the bell went!
that is a beautiful lathe. It looks like the lathe has the ability to hold tighter tolerances than the wood turned on it.
Beautifully restored lathe. What a gem !. Made in the UK I believe, nice to know we havent always been second rate.....
No we haven't lol we used to export woodworking and engineering machines of great quality all over the Globe, in the times where the world was a much much bigger place than it is now in terms of getting stuff to the other side of the globe. Though even now big machinery has to be shipped
Hi, i’ve just come across your CZcams link on making a thread adapter for Watkin RU , Great Territorial showing how are you made the adapter.
This is one of Watkins pattern making lathes, made in the UK in the mid forties to fifties and 60s, I want a serious bit of kit in them days the advanced and even today standards still a serious bit of kit, Back in the mid-90s I purchased a Watkin R8 Which I restored and put a new motor with a lenzes inverter drive on it, Over the past month or so has been a guy in Scotland restoring the Wadkin R8 , i’ll leave his name is Martin Woodhead , is a professional wood tuner, As for myself I’m now retired living in France I still have my lathe and occasionally still do some wood turning.
Keep up the great work great to see these old machines still out the form in new modern ones.

Beautiful lathe. What a great design with the three points of contact on the bed leveling feet. Always equal pressure, and easy to level. Wish more manufacturers did that.
Wow, what a cool lathe! Nicely made parts. 👍🏼
