அறிவதற்கு மிகவும் அரிதான சரித்திர தகவல்களை கவனத்துடன் திரட்டி எளிய நடையில் சுவாரஸ்யமாக தருவதற்கு உங்களுக்கு இணை நீங்கள் தான்
'மெட்ராஸ்' என்ற பெயரை கேட்டாலே மனம் கனக்கிறது. ஆங்கில பெயர் என்று கூறி மாற்றப்பட்டது. உண்மை என்ன? மதராசபட்டினம் என்ற தமிழ் பெயரில் இருந்து வந்தது தான் மெட்ராஸ். ஐரோப்பியர்கள் இந்தியா வருவதற்கு பல நூற்றாண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பே மதராசபட்டினம் இருந்துள்ளது. கிருஷ்ணகிரி அருகே பெண்ணீஸ்வரமடம் என்ற இடத்தில் கிடைத்த 14-ஆம் நூற்றாண்டை சேர்ந்த கல்வெட்டில் 'மதராசபட்டிணம்' என்ற பெயர் குறிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. எனவே மெட்ராஸ் என்பது ஆங்கில பெயர் அல்ல. சென்னப்பட்டினம் என்பது 'சென்னப்ப நாயக்கர்' என்ற தெலுங்கு ஆட்சியரின் பெயரில் இருந்து வந்தது. தமிழில் லெக்சிகனில் சென்னை என்ற பெயரே கிடையாது (தெலுங்கில் 'சென்னா' என்றால் நல்ல/fair என்று பொருள்படும்). எனவே சென்னை என்ற தெலுங்கு பெயரை மாற்றி மீண்டும் மதராசபட்டினம்-Madras என்ற தமிழ் பெயரை வைக்க வேண்டும்.

அர்தூண் சாலையில் உள்ள மாநகராட்சி துவக்கப்பள்ளியில் 1960களில் நான் நான்காம் வகுப்பு வரை படித்தேன். அர்தூண் சாலையின் பெயர்காரணத்தை இப்போதுதான் தெரிந்து கொள்கிறேன். நன்றி ஆசிரியர் அவர்களே!

Mr. Sriram's description of ambience within the Armenian church is quite like what I experienced there. Loud and busy street on the outside, but once you go into the church, it is as if one has time-travelled to the past. Very quite and peaceful.

Dear Sir, need information about triangle stone which is encroached by GRT jewelleries in MC road washermenpettai.
My elders say that this stone was used as boundary for St George fort. Similar stone is located backside of light house and next to new marina police station.
