I bought a loaded premium CX30 for my wife, she loves it. It will never go offroad unless the apocalypse strikes. She had a 2012 Focus Titanium that Ford repurchased from us because of the 5 Dual Clutch transmission failures. She loves how refined the Mazda is in comparison.

I rented a new 2012 Focus for a week, back then, and hated the "PowerShift" transmission, driving in the CO high-country. And in 2020, it was finally revealed (by Ford powertrain engineers) that Ford knew, all along, that their transmission had serious problems. 'Very poor company ethics!
If you want rugged looks, get the Subaru Crosstrek. If you want a unique and striking design, get the Mazda CX 30. If you want a bland design, get the HRV. No seriously why would anyone look at the HRV when the other two vehicles have way better looks and a better driving experience.
If you have any rugged looks, more interior space, much betterment fuel economy and leading reliability get a RAV4 hybrid. If you also want to crush these autos with 0-60 in 5.7 seconds get the up coming Rav4 Prime AWD PHEV with 302hp!
James the problem is pricing. You can get into a fully loaded crosstrek or CX-30 for almost the same price as a base model RAV4. I see where you’re coming from but the RAV4 is in a completely different class from those two vehicles so not everyone needs the extra space or a faster vehicle (which is why this class exists).

I just bought a '20 Forester and both the Forester and the Trek beat the RAV4 in comparable trim by 2-3K (at least) The RAV is a good rig but in Tahoe where I live, the Subies vastly outsell the RAV4. I've done a lift, wheels, and tires on my base Forester and am still under 27K.
I'll stick with my forester xt. Last I checked my 0-60 was under 5 seconds and I haven't put much money into it, just improved air flow. I'll do the same thing to my next one when Subaru puts the 2.4L turbo engine the ascent has into the next forester xt. Not to mention having about 10 inches ground clearance with my upgraded springs gets me access to all my favorite fishing holes at a price I'd bet is far cheaper than that new rav4 coming out.
Grey Bush they are in 2 different classes. Plus, not everyone likes the looks of a forester (I think it looks like a lego brick) or the CVT (especially with that turbo, which has been proven to lessen the life of that transmission).
Your review encapsulated the core strength of each vehicle, The Mazda has always been about sporty driving, the Honda has always been a marvel of ergonomic engineering (they always manage to get a case of beer in a six pack box). And the Subaru for me has always been about practical get it done mentality. I have the 18 Crosstrek and it is an awesome car that gets me where I want to go in relative comfort.
You are so optimistic when said “in relative comfort “. Yes I like for some reason Subaru better than two others, but Subaru and comfort not related at all. I had 2013 Impreza and it was awful car. I think wheelbarrow is better option. Sorry Subaru. Hope Crosstrek is better
@@agpawpaw5912 Crosstrek is pretty comfortable. I haven't had an issue and we do some crazy stuff with ours haha. I've taken it on long highway drives as well and I have no complaints. We have a Mercedes and I hate driving it because the steering wheel is super small and it's not really comfortable to sit in if you are really tall. I definitely like my Subi more.
AG Pawpaw perfect my mum has a 2013 Impreza hatch for her work but it had to go in for a recall a few weeks ago and she got the latest base model subie XV as a loan for the week and I drove it and wow it was fun to drive and way more of a smoother ride then the Impreza so take as you will.
I just got one of these. I was blown away by the whole package. Mazda is doing fantastic stuff atm. I decided to go with this model despite the limited ground clearance since I'll still be doing the vast majority of my driving on paved roads. It just means you have to be aware of the limitations and take it really slow when going off road. Subaru doesn't offer the 2.5L engine in Australia and the 2L was far too sluggish for me.

But yes the X20 has approximately the same power as the G25 but it comes at a 4k premium in Australia and there is almost no availability unfortunately. I would have loved to at least try one though. Still not worth a 4k premium for fairly minimal fuel savings in any case…
I just bought a premium cx30awd today. This is my second Mazda and I really do appreciate their design language as well as driving dynamics. It's a car that makes you feel like the designers really spent some time behind the wheel getting everything right and it's a rewarding driving experience.I think it's a good value for the money and offers some real premium features. Especially these days.. it's important to note that the dealer experience was one of people who really enjoy their job and the product. That means a lot when you're spending $30,000 on a car, and having cross shopped many vehicles, it was a welcome relief in the spring of 2022.
How much did you end up paying for the premium out of the door ? I am trying to buy the same trim here in texas but the dealerships are giving me quote of about $35k total. And is the naturally aspirated motor enough without the turbo ?
@@rbnh9827 I paid sticker price which is unusual right now in the Los Angeles area. I just got lucky because there's a new dealership nearby that is not charging over sticker. So about 35k with tax and title is about right. I was able to test drive the turbo and while it does offer a lot more power, I opted for the standard 2.5 motor because it has sufficient power in my opinion and costs less. Enough power to still have fun in the canyons.
I'm really looking into the cx30...I mostly do city driving but every Tuesday me and my dog go for a hike to reset ourselves and my friends and I do annual camping trips so it's not like I would need it to offroad majority of the time or hard-core like most people. I love the minimalistic design of the cx30...as much as I would love the capabilities and clearance the crosstrek provides I was drawn more to the cx30 upon sitting in it compared to the crosstrek...plus the 2021 has 8in of clearance now so I hope the increase would make it better...thank you for this video it made my decision easier
We just drove a new loaded version CX-30 as a rental in Iceland. Outward visibility was not great but most other things were. It handled seriously scary roads (12-15%grades of gravel) with poise. But I still found myself wishing I was in one of my Subarus. The Mazda is more fun to drive thiugh. Very upscale.
Nice video. I recently got the 2023 Mazda cx-30 and I'm glad to see the trail mode made a big difference. Plus the ground clearance has increased too which I am happy to see. For 25k out the door, I have no complaints.
My first AWD vehicle was a 2015 BMW X1. Immediately, I was sold on the advantages of AWD, in ALL types of weather and driving conditions. I saw how first hand how AWD provides noticeable traction benefits on a dry, sunny day in the city. Thank you for these videos. I appreciate that you take the time to put these vehicles through the paces. It definitely shows the real world capabilities and limitations.
the goold ol bimmer. But i wouldnt get current generation of bimmers. Your classic grill is getting bigger and bigger and its kinda ugly. Look at those X3 and X5....their 2020 grill is just horrendous.
For the 0-60 (on the Mazda at least, as a CX-5 owner) you need to heel/toe or otherwise "brake" while getting the revs up slightly. As you saw, it "thinks" first before going when you simply stomp it, but if you rev up just a little (1500-2000 for example) you'll get an instant snap takeoff and much better 0-60 (assuming it's similar, which it should be since the drivetrain is pretty much the same).
I love my 2016 Subaru Crosstrek. It handles off-road so well. Mudding is really fun and racing it hard through the woods rally style is truly a breeze. No other car does as well as subaru in this style. Now add that with the crazy good gas mileage band it's easily taking the crown. I can't wait for the 2021 model. If it's higher end model is a big enough upgrade from my 2016 I'll be buying one immediately. It looks absolutely gorgeous.
@@eamonob84 no we did not. I ended up getting a BMW and my lady loves the 2016 crosstrek and she's going to keep it a little longer. It's been good to us so we would love to keep it a while longer. The 21s look so amazing though!
Vancouver 🇨🇦: Purchased the 2021 Mazda CX-30 GT ... In the end it spoke to me on a visceral versatility level ... the ability to be slick and sophisticated with client meetings / business in the city & then heading up into mountains or up the coast into the upper level highways and off the beaten track logging roads ... I think it fits that duality quite well. All three are very brilliant ... so I don’t think anyone would go wrong with any of the choices on offer. All good.
In reality, all 3 are lifted hatchbacks with AWD. For most people the AWD will only come into play on snowy/wet roads, but it seems the HRV is for that use only while ths CX30 and Crosstrek are pretty comparable. If you truly need the Crosstrek's extra inch of clearance, buying something else would be best. If it were my money i'd skip the AWD altogether (i live in Texas and cant remember the last time I went truly offroad) and get the car the CX30 is based on...the Mazda 3 hatchback.
Mazda not going CVT made me interested in the brand. After buying my wife a CX-5, I really enjoy Mazda and where they're trying to go. The fact that they're now including trail mode makes a huge difference as we live on a backroad outside of town that is not county maintained. 95% of the time it's fine but it does flood and snow a few times a year and knowing my wife will get home as long as I put a decent set of tires on it is a big deal. Trail mode was a needed upgrade, even for a car that will spend almost 100% of the time on the road.
2021 Crosstrek Sport or Limited for me. Living in the mtns and working in the valley. Hard to beat a Subi in the awd department, but that extra inch of ground clearance goes a long way in the snow. Personally I don't think they're cvts are that bad compared to some others. I definitely feel like you get a lot more bang for your buck with Subaru
I wish Mazda, Honda, and Subaru would collaborate with one another so we can get a compact crossover that has plenty of power, NO CVT, plenty of space, and excellent trail capabilities. The best of all of them.
Preferred CX 30 AWD just 15 day's ago . I drove a Chevy ZR2 for 20 ,years so i really can't give comparisons . This car is glued to the road and takes a little more getting used to for me . Yes , i like my Mazda CX 30 !
Living in the Northwest, we wanted AWD. Shopped the Crosstrek and CX30 and found the Crosstrek far beneath the CX30 in refinement. Especially the noise level coming from the rear of the Crosstrek was not so good.
I appreciate all the work it takes filming on the trails your one of the only few that actually shows the capability of the all wheel drive systems out there keep up the great work 👍. by the way I'm pro suburu all the way ..
Great review. I really enjoyed the CX-30 but the tiny back seat meant I had to remove it from my short list of vehicles. However, the interior was beautiful and well done for the front seats. That trail mode is pretty neat. Good for Mazda. I hope this is a big hit for them.
the back seat is not tiny...only if your passengers are 6'2 and up. Usually people dont carry that much passengers in the back seat anyway, and if they do the front driver and passengers can usually adjust a little to have more back space. Just my opinion. I hope you went physically to check for the leg space before removing it.

I'm 6'0" and I couldn't even get my feet into the footwells without scraping the back of the seat, and then my knees were into the back of the seat. Meanwhile I could sit behind myself fine in a Crosstrek. Very disappointing as I was excited to try out the CX30. I've wanted a Mazda for my next car for years and unfortunately I just couldn't justify it.
Aftermarket support for the Crosstrek is getting better and better. I can find a turbo, skids, rockers, intake spacers, cotton airfilters, exhausts, winchmounts, bumpers, suspensions, hitches, AT/MT tires, a rear locker, etc.
I have a cx-30 and it's great in the snow especially in the snow storms we get here in northern Canada. I went from a Nissan Rouge sport to a cx-30 and would never look back!

After extensively researching the Mazda CX5 and CX3, the Honda HR-V, Toyota CH-R and Subaru Crosstrek, I bought the Crosstrek a couple of years ago. What a superb car. Being able to go from long highway drives to rocky and soft roads at the destination is fantastic. All wheel drive is the bomb. If I had to do it again, I'd go for the upcoming Crosstrek Sport model.
Subaru mastered one of the most brilliant marketing scams in automotive history. Convincing average people that they need all-wheel drive just to drive in the rain.
@@aca2983 say what you want but in NY we can tell the difference. Many of us who live way out in the woods appreciate Subaru. We actually make it to work when the snow is 3ft. Can't say the same for the others. Plus Subaru has a pretty solid community and a good majority use their cars off-road. Myself included. Racing in the woods is a ton of fun. Not a marketing scheme if it helps. Maybe to people in a city but they aren't the main people buying a Subaru.

@@adamnash1873 so far we've been stuck once in our Crosstrek but it was because we bottomed out so the wheels weren't touching the ground. The thing with the engine is a concern for some because the oil issues but ours is nearly 70k miles with no issues so far and the transmission is fine but it's kinda weird driving because it suffers from laggy shifts. That's due to the computer trying to get you the best gas mileage possible lol. I wish you could turn it off so it wouldnt be such a harsh shifter but what can ya do 🤷🏽♂️ haha. Also I'm sorry you have to deal with that weather. I'm on the PA border but I hate driving up there in the winter. Absolutely a nightmare!
I will support all wheel drive in an ICE STORM my Kia Sportage drove perfect 2018 model but if you live in an area that gets no snow then yeah it’s a complete waste of money
Most consumers don't take their crossover off road. If you want off road get 4 runner or jeep. Also, all CVT will fail. SUBARU, HONDA, NISSAN all fail and cost thousands. None of you journalist point this out.LOL
I have a new 21 and it is NOT an off-road car......As I have described above......At least not compared to a Subaru.......I traded My Forester, not trusting OR liking the CVT.......What I am going to wait for is an all electric Forester.....Liking electric AND avoiding the CVT......Paul

Was on the fence about the Mazda and the new Subaru. Drive an Impreza Sport now and it's time for a new car. I've driven the CX-5 in the past year and as always this Mazda looks to be great offering . It's also a bit cheaper than than the Crosstrek but it's styling is a little more city-focused than what works for me. Plus I can be rough on a car. Thanks, this helped me a lot.
First of all, I just wanna say that you are easily becoming one of favorite CZcams reviewers of late, so keep up the good work! Great tests, great commentary. Second, Honda’s AWD system is such a joke. Has been for a long time, and hasn’t really improved. So much so that I get a laugh when people tell me they have an AWD Honda SUV.
I feel they stopped making good looking subarus around '04. Cx30 looks great inside and out for a sub 30k car. Had to check the sticker a few times when we were looking at it. I don't think either would be on the list for serious offroad, but the Mrs. bought the Mazda on the spot.
In Europe there is no trail/offroad mode in CX-30. In CX-5 this function is hidden under tcs off button. That's really a pity you can't test Suzuki Vitara with All Grip Select awd system on that rocky road.
Remember that traction control does exactly that and tries to prevent (or limits) wheelspin. That Honda would have been fine if you just turn off traction control. People always have issues with vehicles not going places because they leave traction control on and wonder why the vehicle won’t power over obstacles. I have owned a Honda and they are extremely capable just just turn off the VSA (Vehicle Stability Assist) which turns off traction control. With some wheel spin you’ll be fine - oh and mine was a 2WD as well.
Btw, for the CX-30 there is no way to turn off traction control. On the Mazda 3 this is based off of, there is a way to turn off traction control but on the CX-30 you just get the option to use the normal traction control from the Mazda 3 or the trail mode which limits wheel Spin and engages the rear from the a stand still where as the standard traction system for the CX-30 and the Mazda 3 will never apply rear torque from a standstill. Why did they do it this way? Idk.
@@groovymotion5706 yeah...you could do no trail mode and sport mode to allow for additional wheel spin. But in the past I would trigger a lot of the Mazda 3's safety and traction management systems doing donuts in the snow. So now if I want to have fun, I need to remember to turn off all the safety features with the circle button and turn off traction control plus sport mode. Maybe if you hold down the trail mode button for an extended period of time it will disable traction control?
@@djw1091994 nope. I had 2 Mazda3 AWD and then the CX-30 and it sux, there's absolutely no way to disable all the systems unless you block the front radar. Switching back to Mazda3 now that they added a turbo 😃

Sure crosstreks had higher ground clearance but the lip of the from bumper kinda limits what you can do so....and honestly i owned a crosstrek for 5 yrs...how many times have i off-roaded...zero unless you count the unpaved gravel road you end up on because the city didn't bother paving it lol.....
@San Diago Well sadly i got a 2021 crosstrek limited for one month, but then some bozo decided to t-bone me on the side and was written off. As much as i driven a subaru I liked it, but i decided not to stick with the same car again and instead opted for a mazda cx30. I was considering korean cars they do look nice but i still like japanese manufacturers better. well xmode is great but 99% at least for me and probably 95% for most drivers likely aren't gonna ever need to press that button. Your seat warmer probably gets more action than xmode.
@San Diago Yes LED is a must and sadly subarus never offer LEDs unless you buy top model which is pricy compared to others like toyota, honda and even mazda offers LED as a std. And honestly owning a Crosstrek limited vs CX30 GT model, CX30 is a bit more expensive not by much, but the fit and finish is way better and you get more stuff from CX30 (auto lift tail gate, heads up display! this stuff you only get when you buy more luxury german models).......Subaru rather remain the practical side but i wish they upscaled it a bit.
The AWDs from Volvo,Audi,Volkswagen,Subaru,Jeep react much faster than Kia,Mazda,Honda,Toyota and others... this is very important in snow and means some cars are charging extra for nothing.
I've owned an HR-V for just over four years now. I was aware from the very beginning that the system was a "lightweight" design not meant for off-roading, and so far I've been more than happy. It puts power to all four wheels from a stop and because it runs mostly FWD at speed I get an average 40 MPG on out-of-town trips. IMO it's the perfect balance of efficient and capable given the car's purpose. I do have to say though when I high centered the car in snow one winter, I overheated the system a couple times from rocking back and forth. But that's the nature of the beast.
Its a FWD with a little rear wheel assist.... I wouldn’t even call it AWD. Sure it’s better for fuel economy than a real AWD system, but why not save a little money and get the FWD version? It’s not gonna help in conditions where AWD is ideal, it’s more expensive retail for something that says it can do a lot but performs poorly 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
In the CX30 didn't they do away with independent rear suspension and replace it with a torsion suspension? How did that effect ride quality in the back seat?

Question for ya, I know you say in the video ground clearance is an issue on multiple occasions and watching a video is never a 1:1 accurate depiction of distances and such but, based on what I see here, this CX-30 didn't look like it was struggling with ground clearance or approach/departure angles and you see to be concerned about. Would you change your mind on the ground clearance after this video?
Yes. The problem is that if we did rub at all it would cause damage. Rocks aren’t nice. This section was pretty tame compared to our “bonus round” sections. I would not be comfortable doing anything more with it. But in the context of what we did do - the CX30 surpassed expectations.
Listen up Mazda...another inch or so of ground clearance would be great for next-gen CX30s. Would also like to see ventilated seats as an option for those of us who live in hot climes, and for the love of god...get rid of the blue accent on the inside of the base model. Looks hideously out of place. Some people complain about the body cladding. Not me..especially after driving a Honda Element. Talk about body cladding...
Truth of the matter is that the majority of vehicles with AWD seldom if ever go off trail....majority of these off trail vehicles are trucks, not autos. The typical AWD system is fine for driving in snow....
Style over Functionality will always penalize real world rear seat space, cargo capacity and utility. MAZDA has a great powertrain and 2 front seats but everything behind those is a complete afterthought, may as well consider it a very cool 2 seater hatchback. Anyone planning on seating full grown adults on the back seat is better off buying a CX-5 at the very least.
Why loath Honda? Honda is generally pretty reputable like Toyota. Do you just hate Honda's CUV/SUV designs?? One thing i dont like about Honda is i dont understand why they keep putting their transmission cluster literally right under where centre entertainment system is. It looks ugly.....but aesthetics wise exterier hondas are fine. Event toyota designs look good, look at those nice corollas these days. Looking sportier than ever but still its a corolla.
Hey Ryan - 9:58 shows the 2019 (or higher) Forester on your usual trail, but the only Forester video I can find on the channel is from the Subaru press event. Did you end up not releasing a full review of that one? Either way, loving the content you're putting out!
Why praise the CX-30's offroad capability but shit on the CX-5's? That doesn't make much sense if you consider the AWD system in the CX-5. Hear me out. The pre-2020 CX-5 has the same AWD setup as this CX-30 and it actually DOES have an offroad mode that is activated by turning off traction control (Mazda issued a press release about this hidden feature a couple years ago and their engineer Dave Coleman has talked about it all over CZcams). The pre-2020 CX-5 offroad mode intervenes in the same way as this CX-30s and VDC, by using the brakes more aggressively to limit wheel spin and transfer torque. The 2020 models merely changed the traction control button label to be an "offroad" button to make this less confusing for drivers. The other difference is that the 2020 models start out in full AWD when you press the offroad button. I admit this is silly, but you can actually get a pre-2020 CX-5 to start out in AWD mode if you turn on the windshield wipers since the AWD system tries to anticipate slippery conditions using windshield wiper activation as one of its data points. I respectfully suggest that you weren't exactly fair toward the pre-2020 CX-5 when you tested it and that it deserves an actual offraod test in the same place you took this CX-30. The 2020 CX-5 has the offroad button like this CX-30 so we already know how it will do.
Well, Subaru's main issues are long overhangs too, especially the inglorious front one in case with the Crosstrek. The manufacturer positions Subarus as off-road capable vehicles but still there's nothing like Jeep's "Trail-rated" versions with decent angles. All in all we are talking about pieces of black plastic here, I don't get why it is so difficult to design and offer ones even for aftermarket use.
I loved the way you present with honesthy the cars. I agree with the advantages regarding driving and disadvanta on ground clearance and space for Mazda. I like the Subary Crosstrek as the MAzda are not very practical, very nice, but if I cannot fit my family not useful for me, the design is very nice, no argue about that, but can't do the job
That would be seriously scary downhill in the rain. We just had a drunk driver wreck our Crosstrek, so seriously considering just getting another one, but I think worth test-driving the Mazda now. Certainly the CX3 is too cramped and just a pretender, but this 30 is making a lot more sense than that thing
This was a very nice vid and delivered without hype. I like that and I'll sub. I run a '20 Forester and I can volunteer that the 2.5L will be an awesome addition to the 'Trek'. The "Trek' has been a runaway favorite in the Tahoe mountains and might even outsell the Outback at this point up here. (also, priced better) I chose the Forester b/c of more practical cargo box shape, more power vs. the 'Trek' and better interior space. Since then, I've lifted it and added 29" AT tires. For now, the Forester is my unicorn rig but the way things are escalating, that might change........like......tomorrow ;-)

I drive a 2016 Mazda 3hatch w/a 6 spd manual and love it!. I'm looking at the CX-30 for my wife. Looks to be a very nice vehicle. For what it's worth, I would never own anything with a CVT.
Suddenly finding myself in the market again, this one's tempting. Being a PNW hiker, I definitely could use more confidence-inspiring ground clearance, but I'm coming from an Impreza hatch, so any of these would be an improvement there. I just wish it had ~250hp or so. For a genre of car that should fit me perfectly, it's frustrating that this one would fit my normal life more (I *love* its looks and handling) but the RAV-4 Adventure would be a better fit on the weekends, even if that trim is a little out of my price range.
@@drivingsports It's certainly tempting, and I'll test drive it if it's available, but it's still a bit expensive at that trim level. Also I need something now-ish, my old car is officially totaled as of today. I wish the CX-30 had the 2021 Mazda 3 turbo engine option this year. (or maybe it's easy enough to add a turbo myself, I haven't researched yet) because then I think I could make do with any other shortcomings. If I'm going to spend that kind of money, the Volvo XC-40 is in the mix then, and I think that looks quite good. Have you had a chance to try that on the trail yet?

I have driven AWD vehicles for many years in the pacific NW they are terrific in rain and light mud but are the best vehicles when you have to drive on Ice and Snow, just put the right tires on them. That's why most Subarus are sold in the NW than anywhere else. All my vehicles were Hyundais. Very reliable and Safe.
I am seeing new videos with the 2021 crosstrek sport being on the lots with some basic reviews. When do you think you will be able to do a FULL review with on and off road, not just a shorty video? CX-30 for driving dynamics, crosstrek for snow, gravel and adverse conditions, the HR-V eh, I have no comment lol. If the 2021 crosstreks, any of them, still have the manual ebrake, that is a huge bonus as I have a electric ebrake in my 2016 legacy and hate it, for all the right reasons. Your title is misleading, you are in fact not comparing the other vehicles to a 2021 crosstrek with the 2.5ltr. Cubic feet is 3 dimensional....so, the HRV having the most doesn’t surprise as it’s got more overall room. BUT, the realistic measure is the floor space below eye level, where most people use luggage space. Excellent review! I’m shopping among the new Cross Trek (drove beautifully!), the CX-30, and the new KIA Seltos.
Great review. I think the comparison reviews are some of the best. I wished you had also included the Kia Seltos since I think it would eclipse the others in many areas such as cargo and passenger volume, features, infotainment, performance on road and value with all it offers with including a 10 year warranty.
Yeah TFL tested the Seltos against the Cx30. The Seltos Overheated and was unable to finish the challenge. I guess that's why there's a 10 year warranty.
At 9:56 there’s a forester sport shown on this trail. Is there any video that has that footage? I can’t seem to find one except for the easy trail on grass and the video in the snow explaining x-mode.
While Subaru has always had a “cult” following and a compelling package due to its practicality, value, features & Symmetrical AWD system, I’ve just never been a fan of their boxer engine and CVT. They’re also expensive that’s why I’ve never really cross shopped Subaru’s whenever I buy vehicles...
L T, they’ve always been expensive here in Cda and not a lot of deals on it with higher interest rates...that’s why I’ve never ever considered it esp when I try to just shop around...I get it though since they have higher resale value comparable to the Honda and Toyota as Subarus have a strong following in certain markets
If you need Lane centering and Lane keeping assist maybe you shouldn't have a driver's license. It seems more like an advertisement for a Mazda then a review.
I drove the HRV when I was new car shopping. It's a dog, the Subaru was also a dog. They both have horrible passing power, but the Subaru was a more pleasing car to drive compared to the HRV. I ended up going a step up and getting a 2016 CX-5 GT. I haven't looked back and have been totally happy with it.
I've been looking at your content for a month now while I've been awaiting on my crosstrek 2021 outdoor (the sport equivalent in Canada). I was also considering the CX-30 and the HR-V. Well, this video just convinced me even more that I did the right thing by picking a crosstrek. It just checks all the boxes for me.
Would like to see VENTILATED SEATS offered for those of us who live in the South. Heated seats are only necessary in Florida if you're a mashochist who enjoys the sensation of your skin being peeled off every time you get out of leather seats.
The trunk differences: Mazda uses a standard AT, Subaru's Sym AWD is literally long, with the engine mounted in front of the front axle and so on. Honda has a CVT and doesn't care about AWD. The priority for Honda was usability. I find HR-V really uncomfortable. Cannot rest my elbows.
Well being the owner of a 2020 6manual Crosstrek premium. I would just keep it and put the accents fa20 in it. And re-badge it the wrx-trek. Oh wait. That is what I plan on doing, lift tires and everything else done just getting ready to swap the engine. And then drive it around subi headquarters good scoop and all...
Nice walkthrough of the CX30. Some friends just bought one and love it. For the uses you lay out it seems to be quite adequate, and good on Mazda for giving it decent power out of the gate. However, the AWD system is a major flaw when stacked up against the Subaru Crosstrek. I would expect it to be full time on the limited slip feature, not just in trail mode. As a safety feature where a traction issue requires immediate action, I shouldn't have to fumble with a button to get myself safely out of the situation. Trail mode almost exactly mirrors the full-time capabilities of the Crosstrek, making it the clear winner in the "why I want AWD" department. X-Mode and ground clearance just takes it to the summit, completely embarrassing the Mazda in that area. As a disclaimer, my wife has an '18 Crosstrek (loaded up, Limited model) and based on our experience, even with the reduced power, I believe the enhanced safety, cargo utility, lower CoG, easier maintenance and other features that match or exceed the Mazda put it quite a bit ahead.
The CX-30 uses tons of sensor data to predicatively go into AWD mode as needed while driving. Rock crawling at a low speed is not a good comparison to your safety scenario you raised (slipping that requires immediate action). Also while I think the crosstrek looks great, long term reliability especially the CVT is a concern (the 6AT has been used in multiple mazda vehicles since 2013, engine since 2014). I dont think the subaru has easier maintenance or higher safety rating than the mazda either.
@@BoogieDownProduction Subaru's AWD system (with tons of sensors, too) has been widely accepted as the system to beat for years (outside of full-lock systems like Jeep's for trail use). There are innumerable vids demonstrating its capabilities on all their vehicles except the BRZ. It's almost impossible to strand one outside of high-centering, and even that's hard to do (also, 8+ inches of ground clearance). The system operates all four wheels independently, so even with a single wheel being the only wheel with traction, the car will move. There was a reliability question at the beginning of the CVT production that turned out to be a non-issue from what I know, though it prompted Subaru to extend the drivetrain warranty for that component. That trans has been in production since at least 2014 as well. We've got it in our '14 Forester with no issues in slightly under 100k miles...it operates flawlessly. Subaru did have some oil consumption issues in engines produced years ago, but that seems to have been addressed according to reports. In a combined 125k miles on our two, I have only had to add a quart between changes once after a long, mountainous road trip (about 5k miles after a change). On the maintenance issue...ever change a Subaru oil filter? Mazda? I can do a full maintenance cycle on ours including oil, filter, tires and fluids, with no jack (LOVE that ground clearance) in 10 minutes or less in our driveway.
I’m pretty sure 90% of people that get a cx30 aren’t going off roading in it so why this type of comparison was necessary is beyond me. The reason the cx30 is the better vehicle than the crosstrek is because the HP and torque blow it out of the water and no CVT. I live in Colorado and CVTs are no good in the mountains. They can not climb and will eventually fail. I’ve learned this from experience - you will never get to the Continental Divide in a crosstrek. I now own a Mazda CX-5 and no issues climbing or with the AWD system. Crosstrek might be amazing going over boulders due to the ground clearance but that vehicle will never get to that type of terrain in the first place if you live in Colorado so what’s the point.
@@orlandos2000 Our experiences are different with regards to the CVT. We've driven our '14 Forester 2.5L with CVT all over the West, over the Rockies, South to the Grand Canyon and beyond, fully loaded with a top carrier without a stumble. Never hit CO though. Maybe the roads are steeper.
whats the story with the acceleration run in sport on the dirt? the back tires are dragging (locked) for nearly half a foot? were you brake torqueing it? or had the parking brake on?
If we do remove air it’s specified in the review. Normally we don’t because manufactures want us to run stock tires at stock psi on their test vehicles.
They have weird ways of measuring their clearances and provide several numbers depending on the deparment that provides the data. (PR and Marketing both use different numbers.)
Who in their right mind would take a car like this on a trail like this ? It isn't meant for this type of road .. A level dirt trail but not rocks like this
I bought a loaded premium CX30 for my wife, she loves it. It will never go offroad unless the apocalypse strikes. She had a 2012 Focus Titanium that Ford repurchased from us because of the 5 Dual Clutch transmission failures. She loves how refined the Mazda is in comparison.

I rented a new 2012 Focus for a week, back then, and hated the "PowerShift" transmission, driving in the CO high-country. And in 2020, it was finally revealed (by Ford powertrain engineers) that Ford knew, all along, that their transmission had serious problems. 'Very poor company ethics!

If you want rugged looks, get the Subaru Crosstrek. If you want a unique and striking design, get the Mazda CX 30. If you want a bland design, get the HRV. No seriously why would anyone look at the HRV when the other two vehicles have way better looks and a better driving experience.
If you have any rugged looks, more interior space, much betterment fuel economy and leading reliability get a RAV4 hybrid. If you also want to crush these autos with 0-60 in 5.7 seconds get the up coming Rav4 Prime AWD PHEV with 302hp!
James the problem is pricing. You can get into a fully loaded crosstrek or CX-30 for almost the same price as a base model RAV4. I see where you’re coming from but the RAV4 is in a completely different class from those two vehicles so not everyone needs the extra space or a faster vehicle (which is why this class exists).

I just bought a '20 Forester and both the Forester and the Trek beat the RAV4 in comparable trim by 2-3K (at least) The RAV is a good rig but in Tahoe where I live, the Subies vastly outsell the RAV4. I've done a lift, wheels, and tires on my base Forester and am still under 27K.
I'll stick with my forester xt. Last I checked my 0-60 was under 5 seconds and I haven't put much money into it, just improved air flow. I'll do the same thing to my next one when Subaru puts the 2.4L turbo engine the ascent has into the next forester xt.
Not to mention having about 10 inches ground clearance with my upgraded springs gets me access to all my favorite fishing holes at a price I'd bet is far cheaper than that new rav4 coming out.
Grey Bush they are in 2 different classes. Plus, not everyone likes the looks of a forester (I think it looks like a lego brick) or the CVT (especially with that turbo, which has been proven to lessen the life of that transmission).
Your review encapsulated the core strength of each vehicle, The Mazda has always been about sporty driving, the Honda has always been a marvel of ergonomic engineering (they always manage to get a case of beer in a six pack box). And the Subaru for me has always been about practical get it done mentality. I have the 18 Crosstrek and it is an awesome car that gets me where I want to go in relative comfort.

@@agpawpaw5912 Crosstrek is pretty comfortable. I haven't had an issue and we do some crazy stuff with ours haha. I've taken it on long highway drives as well and I have no complaints. We have a Mercedes and I hate driving it because the steering wheel is super small and it's not really comfortable to sit in if you are really tall. I definitely like my Subi more.
AG Pawpaw perfect my mum has a 2013 Impreza hatch for her work but it had to go in for a recall a few weeks ago and she got the latest base model subie XV as a loan for the week and I drove it and wow it was fun to drive and way more of a smoother ride then the Impreza so take as you will.
I just got one of these. I was blown away by the whole package. Mazda is doing fantastic stuff atm. I decided to go with this model despite the limited ground clearance since I'll still be doing the vast majority of my driving on paved roads. It just means you have to be aware of the limitations and take it really slow when going off road. Subaru doesn't offer the 2.5L engine in Australia and the 2L was far too sluggish for me.
The new 2.0 mild hybrid had the same power than the 2.5

But yes the X20 has approximately the same power as the G25 but it comes at a 4k premium in Australia and there is almost no availability unfortunately. I would have loved to at least try one though. Still not worth a 4k premium for fairly minimal fuel savings in any case…

I just bought a premium cx30awd today. This is my second Mazda and I really do appreciate their design language as well as driving dynamics. It's a car that makes you feel like the designers really spent some time behind the wheel getting everything right and it's a rewarding driving experience.I think it's a good value for the money and offers some real premium features. Especially these days.. it's important to note that the dealer experience was one of people who really enjoy their job and the product. That means a lot when you're spending $30,000 on a car, and having cross shopped many vehicles, it was a welcome relief in the spring of 2022.
How much did you end up paying for the premium out of the door ? I am trying to buy the same trim here in texas but the dealerships are giving me quote of about $35k total. And is the naturally aspirated motor enough without the turbo ?
@@rbnh9827 I paid sticker price which is unusual right now in the Los Angeles area. I just got lucky because there's a new dealership nearby that is not charging over sticker. So about 35k with tax and title is about right. I was able to test drive the turbo and while it does offer a lot more power, I opted for the standard 2.5 motor because it has sufficient power in my opinion and costs less. Enough power to still have fun in the canyons.
I'm really looking into the cx30...I mostly do city driving but every Tuesday me and my dog go for a hike to reset ourselves and my friends and I do annual camping trips so it's not like I would need it to offroad majority of the time or hard-core like most people. I love the minimalistic design of the cx30...as much as I would love the capabilities and clearance the crosstrek provides I was drawn more to the cx30 upon sitting in it compared to the crosstrek...plus the 2021 has 8in of clearance now so I hope the increase would make it better...thank you for this video it made my decision easier
I bought my parents a CX-30 in Australia, and they absolutely love it. They would never go out on the trail lol.

We just drove a new loaded version CX-30 as a rental in Iceland. Outward visibility was not great but most other things were. It handled seriously scary roads (12-15%grades of gravel) with poise. But I still found myself wishing I was in one of my Subarus. The Mazda is more fun to drive thiugh. Very upscale.
Nice video. I recently got the 2023 Mazda cx-30 and I'm glad to see the trail mode made a big difference. Plus the ground clearance has increased too which I am happy to see. For 25k out the door, I have no complaints.
My first AWD vehicle was a 2015 BMW X1. Immediately, I was sold on the advantages of AWD, in ALL types of weather and driving conditions. I saw how first hand how AWD provides noticeable traction benefits on a dry, sunny day in the city.

the goold ol bimmer. But i wouldnt get current generation of bimmers. Your classic grill is getting bigger and bigger and its kinda ugly. Look at those X3 and X5....their 2020 grill is just horrendous.
For the 0-60 (on the Mazda at least, as a CX-5 owner) you need to heel/toe or otherwise "brake" while getting the revs up slightly. As you saw, it "thinks" first before going when you simply stomp it, but if you rev up just a little (1500-2000 for example) you'll get an instant snap takeoff and much better 0-60 (assuming it's similar, which it should be since the drivetrain is pretty much the same).
I love my 2016 Subaru Crosstrek. It handles off-road so well. Mudding is really fun and racing it hard through the woods rally style is truly a breeze. No other car does as well as subaru in this style. Now add that with the crazy good gas mileage band it's easily taking the crown. I can't wait for the 2021 model. If it's higher end model is a big enough upgrade from my 2016 I'll be buying one immediately. It looks absolutely gorgeous.

Vancouver 🇨🇦: Purchased the 2021 Mazda CX-30 GT ... In the end it spoke to me on a visceral versatility level ... the ability to be slick and sophisticated with client meetings / business in the city & then heading up into mountains or up the coast into the upper level highways and off the beaten track logging roads ... I think it fits that duality quite well. All three are very brilliant ... so I don’t think anyone would go wrong with any of the choices on offer. All good.
I should add ... what I see off road in British Columbia the most are Subarus, Jeep’s, Toyota’s etc.
In reality, all 3 are lifted hatchbacks with AWD. For most people the AWD will only come into play on snowy/wet roads, but it seems the HRV is for that use only while ths CX30 and Crosstrek are pretty comparable. If you truly need the Crosstrek's extra inch of clearance, buying something else would be best. If it were my money i'd skip the AWD altogether (i live in Texas and cant remember the last time I went truly offroad) and get the car the CX30 is based on...the Mazda 3 hatchback.
Mazda not going CVT made me interested in the brand. After buying my wife a CX-5, I really enjoy Mazda and where they're trying to go. The fact that they're now including trail mode makes a huge difference as we live on a backroad outside of town that is not county maintained. 95% of the time it's fine but it does flood and snow a few times a year and knowing my wife will get home as long as I put a decent set of tires on it is a big deal. Trail mode was a needed upgrade, even for a car that will spend almost 100% of the time on the road.
2021 Crosstrek Sport or Limited for me. Living in the mtns and working in the valley. Hard to beat a Subi in the awd department, but that extra inch of ground clearance goes a long way in the snow. Personally I don't think they're cvts are that bad compared to some others. I definitely feel like you get a lot more bang for your buck with Subaru

If the crosstrek had the 2.4L turbo I'd go with it. But, in this case I'd pick the CX-30 with their 2.5L turbo.

Preferred CX 30 AWD just 15 day's ago . I drove a Chevy ZR2 for 20 ,years so i really can't give comparisons . This car is glued to the road and takes a little more getting used to for me . Yes , i like my Mazda CX 30 !
Living in the Northwest, we wanted AWD. Shopped the Crosstrek and CX30 and found the Crosstrek far beneath the CX30 in refinement. Especially the noise level coming from the rear of the Crosstrek was not so good.
I appreciate all the work it takes filming on the trails your one of the only few that actually shows the capability of the all wheel drive systems out there keep up the great work 👍. by the way I'm pro suburu all the way ..

Great review. I really enjoyed the CX-30 but the tiny back seat meant I had to remove it from my short list of vehicles. However, the interior was beautiful and well done for the front seats. That trail mode is pretty neat. Good for Mazda. I hope this is a big hit for them.
the back seat is not tiny...only if your passengers are 6'2 and up. Usually people dont carry that much passengers in the back seat anyway, and if they do the front driver and passengers can usually adjust a little to have more back space. Just my opinion. I hope you went physically to check for the leg space before removing it.

I'm 6'0" and I couldn't even get my feet into the footwells without scraping the back of the seat, and then my knees were into the back of the seat. Meanwhile I could sit behind myself fine in a Crosstrek. Very disappointing as I was excited to try out the CX30. I've wanted a Mazda for my next car for years and unfortunately I just couldn't justify it.

Aftermarket support for the Crosstrek is getting better and better. I can find a turbo, skids, rockers, intake spacers, cotton airfilters, exhausts, winchmounts, bumpers, suspensions, hitches, AT/MT tires, a rear locker, etc.
Having fun on the way up to the trail, is a feature in itself. Ill take the peppy Mazda please!
I have a cx-30 and it's great in the snow especially in the snow storms we get here in northern Canada. I went from a Nissan Rouge sport to a cx-30 and would never look back!

And now Mazda is working with Toyota should be an interesting future!
After extensively researching the Mazda CX5 and CX3, the Honda HR-V, Toyota CH-R and Subaru Crosstrek, I bought the Crosstrek a couple of years ago. What a superb car. Being able to go from long highway drives to rocky and soft roads at the destination is fantastic. All wheel drive is the bomb. If I had to do it again, I'd go for the upcoming Crosstrek Sport model.
Sorry but CX30 is just a much better car.

@@aca2983 say what you want but in NY we can tell the difference. Many of us who live way out in the woods appreciate Subaru. We actually make it to work when the snow is 3ft. Can't say the same for the others. Plus Subaru has a pretty solid community and a good majority use their cars off-road. Myself included. Racing in the woods is a ton of fun. Not a marketing scheme if it helps. Maybe to people in a city but they aren't the main people buying a Subaru.

@@adamnash1873 so far we've been stuck once in our Crosstrek but it was because we bottomed out so the wheels weren't touching the ground. The thing with the engine is a concern for some because the oil issues but ours is nearly 70k miles with no issues so far and the transmission is fine but it's kinda weird driving because it suffers from laggy shifts. That's due to the computer trying to get you the best gas mileage possible lol. I wish you could turn it off so it wouldnt be such a harsh shifter but what can ya do 🤷🏽♂️ haha. Also I'm sorry you have to deal with that weather. I'm on the PA border but I hate driving up there in the winter. Absolutely a nightmare!
I will support all wheel drive in an ICE STORM my Kia Sportage drove perfect 2018 model but if you live in an area that gets no snow then yeah it’s a complete waste of money
Most consumers don't take their crossover off road. If you want off road get 4 runner or jeep. Also, all CVT will fail. SUBARU, HONDA, NISSAN all fail and cost thousands. None of you journalist point this out.LOL

Was on the fence about the Mazda and the new Subaru. Drive an Impreza Sport now and it's time for a new car. I've driven the CX-5 in the past year and as always this Mazda looks to be great offering . It's also a bit cheaper than than the Crosstrek but it's styling is a little more city-focused than what works for me. Plus I can be rough on a car. Thanks, this helped me a lot.

Second, Honda’s AWD system is such a joke. Has been for a long time, and hasn’t really improved. So much so that I get a laugh when people tell me they have an AWD Honda SUV.

I feel they stopped making good looking subarus around '04. Cx30 looks great inside and out for a sub 30k car. Had to check the sticker a few times when we were looking at it. I don't think either would be on the list for serious offroad, but the Mrs. bought the Mazda on the spot.
In Europe there is no trail/offroad mode in CX-30. In CX-5 this function is hidden under tcs off button.
That's really a pity you can't test Suzuki Vitara with All Grip Select awd system on that rocky road.
You can turn TCS off in CX-30 aswell. At least mine have that option.

Remember that traction control does exactly that and tries to prevent (or limits) wheelspin. That Honda would have been fine if you just turn off traction control. People always have issues with vehicles not going places because they leave traction control on and wonder why the vehicle won’t power over obstacles. I have owned a Honda and they are extremely capable just just turn off the VSA (Vehicle Stability Assist) which turns off traction control. With some wheel spin you’ll be fine - oh and mine was a 2WD as well.
Btw, for the CX-30 there is no way to turn off traction control. On the Mazda 3 this is based off of, there is a way to turn off traction control but on the CX-30 you just get the option to use the normal traction control from the Mazda 3 or the trail mode which limits wheel Spin and engages the rear from the a stand still where as the standard traction system for the CX-30 and the Mazda 3 will never apply rear torque from a standstill. Why did they do it this way? Idk.

@@groovymotion5706 yeah...you could do no trail mode and sport mode to allow for additional wheel spin. But in the past I would trigger a lot of the Mazda 3's safety and traction management systems doing donuts in the snow. So now if I want to have fun, I need to remember to turn off all the safety features with the circle button and turn off traction control plus sport mode. Maybe if you hold down the trail mode button for an extended period of time it will disable traction control?
@@djw1091994 nope. I had 2 Mazda3 AWD and then the CX-30 and it sux, there's absolutely no way to disable all the systems unless you block the front radar. Switching back to Mazda3 now that they added a turbo 😃

all wheel drive isn't made for off road it is made for roads with less traction like snow, rain or un maintained roads with poor pavement.

Sure crosstreks had higher ground clearance but the lip of the from bumper kinda limits what you can do so....and honestly i owned a crosstrek for 5 yrs...how many times have i off-roaded...zero unless you count the unpaved gravel road you end up on because the city didn't bother paving it lol.....
@San Diago Well sadly i got a 2021 crosstrek limited for one month, but then some bozo decided to t-bone me on the side and was written off. As much as i driven a subaru I liked it, but i decided not to stick with the same car again and instead opted for a mazda cx30. I was considering korean cars they do look nice but i still like japanese manufacturers better.
well xmode is great but 99% at least for me and probably 95% for most drivers likely aren't gonna ever need to press that button. Your seat warmer probably gets more action than xmode.
@San Diago Yes LED is a must and sadly subarus never offer LEDs unless you buy top model which is pricy compared to others like toyota, honda and even mazda offers LED as a std. And honestly owning a Crosstrek limited vs CX30 GT model, CX30 is a bit more expensive not by much, but the fit and finish is way better and you get more stuff from CX30 (auto lift tail gate, heads up display! this stuff you only get when you buy more luxury german models).......Subaru rather remain the practical side but i wish they upscaled it a bit.

The AWDs from Volvo,Audi,Volkswagen,Subaru,Jeep react much faster than Kia,Mazda,Honda,Toyota and others... this is very important in snow and means some cars are charging extra for nothing.

I've owned an HR-V for just over four years now. I was aware from the very beginning that the system was a "lightweight" design not meant for off-roading, and so far I've been more than happy. It puts power to all four wheels from a stop and because it runs mostly FWD at speed I get an average 40 MPG on out-of-town trips. IMO it's the perfect balance of efficient and capable given the car's purpose.
I do have to say though when I high centered the car in snow one winter, I overheated the system a couple times from rocking back and forth. But that's the nature of the beast.
Its a FWD with a little rear wheel assist.... I wouldn’t even call it AWD. Sure it’s better for fuel economy than a real AWD system, but why not save a little money and get the FWD version? It’s not gonna help in conditions where AWD is ideal, it’s more expensive retail for something that says it can do a lot but performs poorly 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
In the CX30 didn't they do away with independent rear suspension and replace it with a torsion suspension? How did that effect ride quality in the back seat?

Question for ya, I know you say in the video ground clearance is an issue on multiple occasions and watching a video is never a 1:1 accurate depiction of distances and such but, based on what I see here, this CX-30 didn't look like it was struggling with ground clearance or approach/departure angles and you see to be concerned about. Would you change your mind on the ground clearance after this video?
Yes. The problem is that if we did rub at all it would cause damage. Rocks aren’t nice. This section was pretty tame compared to our “bonus round” sections. I would not be comfortable doing anything more with it. But in the context of what we did do - the CX30 surpassed expectations.
Listen up Mazda...another inch or so of ground clearance would be great for next-gen CX30s. Would also like to see ventilated seats as an option for those of us who live in hot climes, and for the love of god...get rid of the blue accent on the inside of the base model. Looks hideously out of place. Some people complain about the body cladding. Not me..especially after driving a Honda Element. Talk about body cladding...

Truth of the matter is that the majority of vehicles with AWD seldom if ever go off trail....majority of these off trail vehicles are trucks, not autos. The typical AWD system is fine for driving in snow....
Style over Functionality will always penalize real world rear seat space, cargo capacity and utility.
MAZDA has a great powertrain and 2 front seats but everything behind those is a complete afterthought, may as well consider it a very cool 2 seater hatchback.
Anyone planning on seating full grown adults on the back seat is better off buying a CX-5 at the very least.
If crosstrek offers 2.5 mated with manual, i am all down for it.

Why loath Honda? Honda is generally pretty reputable like Toyota. Do you just hate Honda's CUV/SUV designs?? One thing i dont like about Honda is i dont understand why they keep putting their transmission cluster literally right under where centre entertainment system is. It looks ugly.....but aesthetics wise exterier hondas are fine. Event toyota designs look good, look at those nice corollas these days. Looking sportier than ever but still its a corolla.
Hey Ryan - 9:58 shows the 2019 (or higher) Forester on your usual trail, but the only Forester video I can find on the channel is from the Subaru press event. Did you end up not releasing a full review of that one? Either way, loving the content you're putting out!
We filmed it on the trail for our Dual X-Mode Explained video. But that was before we started doing regular testing there.

Why praise the CX-30's offroad capability but shit on the CX-5's? That doesn't make much sense if you consider the AWD system in the CX-5. Hear me out. The pre-2020 CX-5 has the same AWD setup as this CX-30 and it actually DOES have an offroad mode that is activated by turning off traction control (Mazda issued a press release about this hidden feature a couple years ago and their engineer Dave Coleman has talked about it all over CZcams). The pre-2020 CX-5 offroad mode intervenes in the same way as this CX-30s and VDC, by using the brakes more aggressively to limit wheel spin and transfer torque. The 2020 models merely changed the traction control button label to be an "offroad" button to make this less confusing for drivers. The other difference is that the 2020 models start out in full AWD when you press the offroad button. I admit this is silly, but you can actually get a pre-2020 CX-5 to start out in AWD mode if you turn on the windshield wipers since the AWD system tries to anticipate slippery conditions using windshield wiper activation as one of its data points. I respectfully suggest that you weren't exactly fair toward the pre-2020 CX-5 when you tested it and that it deserves an actual offraod test in the same place you took this CX-30. The 2020 CX-5 has the offroad button like this CX-30 so we already know how it will do.
Did the driver forget to release the parking brake at 6:22? Mazda is dragging the rear wheels and they are not even turning!
Well, Subaru's main issues are long overhangs too, especially the inglorious front one in case with the Crosstrek. The manufacturer positions Subarus as off-road capable vehicles but still there's nothing like Jeep's "Trail-rated" versions with decent angles. All in all we are talking about pieces of black plastic here, I don't get why it is so difficult to design and offer ones even for aftermarket use.
I loved the way you present with honesthy the cars. I agree with the advantages regarding driving and disadvanta on ground clearance and space for Mazda. I like the Subary Crosstrek as the MAzda are not very practical, very nice, but if I cannot fit my family not useful for me, the design is very nice, no argue about that, but can't do the job
That would be seriously scary downhill in the rain. We just had a drunk driver wreck our Crosstrek, so seriously considering just getting another one, but I think worth test-driving the Mazda now. Certainly the CX3 is too cramped and just a pretender, but this 30 is making a lot more sense than that thing

This was a very nice vid and delivered without hype. I like that and I'll sub. I run a '20 Forester and I can volunteer that the 2.5L will be an awesome addition to the 'Trek'. The "Trek' has been a runaway favorite in the Tahoe mountains and might even outsell the Outback at this point up here. (also, priced better) I chose the Forester b/c of more practical cargo box shape, more power vs. the 'Trek' and better interior space. Since then, I've lifted it and added 29" AT tires. For now, the Forester is my unicorn rig but the way things are escalating, that might change........like......tomorrow ;-)

I drive a 2016 Mazda 3hatch w/a 6 spd manual and love it!. I'm looking at the CX-30 for my wife. Looks to be a very nice vehicle. For what it's worth, I would never own anything with a CVT.
Mazda 3 now comes in AWD too. I think I would save money and get the 3 unless she is really gonna need the ground clearance.

Suddenly finding myself in the market again, this one's tempting. Being a PNW hiker, I definitely could use more confidence-inspiring ground clearance, but I'm coming from an Impreza hatch, so any of these would be an improvement there. I just wish it had ~250hp or so. For a genre of car that should fit me perfectly, it's frustrating that this one would fit my normal life more (I *love* its looks and handling) but the RAV-4 Adventure would be a better fit on the weekends, even if that trim is a little out of my price range.

@@drivingsports It's certainly tempting, and I'll test drive it if it's available, but it's still a bit expensive at that trim level. Also I need something now-ish, my old car is officially totaled as of today. I wish the CX-30 had the 2021 Mazda 3 turbo engine option this year. (or maybe it's easy enough to add a turbo myself, I haven't researched yet) because then I think I could make do with any other shortcomings.
If I'm going to spend that kind of money, the Volvo XC-40 is in the mix then, and I think that looks quite good. Have you had a chance to try that on the trail yet?

I have driven AWD vehicles for many years in the pacific NW they are terrific in rain and light mud but are the best vehicles when you have to drive on Ice and Snow, just put the right tires on them. That's why most Subarus are sold in the NW than anywhere else.
All my vehicles were Hyundais. Very reliable and Safe.

I am seeing new videos with the 2021 crosstrek sport being on the lots with some basic reviews. When do you think you will be able to do a FULL review with on and off road, not just a shorty video? CX-30 for driving dynamics, crosstrek for snow, gravel and adverse conditions, the HR-V eh, I have no comment lol. If the 2021 crosstreks, any of them, still have the manual ebrake, that is a huge bonus as I have a electric ebrake in my 2016 legacy and hate it, for all the right reasons. Your title is misleading, you are in fact not comparing the other vehicles to a 2021 crosstrek with the 2.5ltr. Will get people to watch your video even though one is not being reviewed, tisk tisk lol

Cubic feet is 3 dimensional....so, the HRV having the most doesn’t surprise as it’s got more overall room. BUT, the realistic measure is the floor space below eye level, where most people use luggage space. Excellent review! I’m shopping among the new Cross Trek (drove beautifully!), the CX-30, and the new KIA Seltos.

Great review. I think the comparison reviews are some of the best. I wished you had also included the Kia Seltos since I think it would eclipse the others in many areas such as cargo and passenger volume, features, infotainment, performance on road and value with all it offers with including a 10 year warranty.
If only we had filmed a Seltos! It's coming up on our schedule...
Yeah TFL tested the Seltos against the Cx30. The Seltos Overheated and was unable to finish the challenge. I guess that's why there's a 10 year warranty.

From a business stand point why would they when they can charge a premium for a cheaper cvt. And if they did rev hang would probably suck .
While Subaru has always had a “cult” following and a compelling package due to its practicality, value, features & Symmetrical AWD system, I’ve just never been a fan of their boxer engine and CVT. They’re also expensive that’s why I’ve never really cross shopped Subaru’s whenever I buy vehicles...
@@ztekz I dont think they're expensive? 24k will get you a decently equipped Crosstrek. That's as much or better than everything in its class.
L T, they’ve always been expensive here in Cda and not a lot of deals on it with higher interest rates...that’s why I’ve never ever considered it esp when I try to just shop around...I get it though since they have higher resale value comparable to the Honda and Toyota as Subarus have a strong following in certain markets

It would have been interesting if you tried the traction control on the cx before engaging the awd.
I drove the HRV when I was new car shopping. It's a dog, the Subaru was also a dog. They both have horrible passing power, but the Subaru was a more pleasing car to drive compared to the HRV. I ended up going a step up and getting a 2016 CX-5 GT. I haven't looked back and have been totally happy with it.
I've been looking at your content for a month now while I've been awaiting on my crosstrek 2021 outdoor (the sport equivalent in Canada). I was also considering the CX-30 and the HR-V. Well, this video just convinced me even more that I did the right thing by picking a crosstrek. It just checks all the boxes for me.

Would like to see VENTILATED SEATS offered for those of us who live in the South. Heated seats are only necessary in Florida if you're a mashochist who enjoys the sensation of your skin being peeled off every time you get out of leather seats.
The trunk differences: Mazda uses a standard AT, Subaru's Sym AWD is literally long, with the engine mounted in front of the front axle and so on. Honda has a CVT and doesn't care about AWD. The priority for Honda was usability.
I find HR-V really uncomfortable. Cannot rest my elbows.

Nice walkthrough of the CX30. Some friends just bought one and love it. For the uses you lay out it seems to be quite adequate, and good on Mazda for giving it decent power out of the gate.
However, the AWD system is a major flaw when stacked up against the Subaru Crosstrek. I would expect it to be full time on the limited slip feature, not just in trail mode. As a safety feature where a traction issue requires immediate action, I shouldn't have to fumble with a button to get myself safely out of the situation. Trail mode almost exactly mirrors the full-time capabilities of the Crosstrek, making it the clear winner in the "why I want AWD" department. X-Mode and ground clearance just takes it to the summit, completely embarrassing the Mazda in that area.
As a disclaimer, my wife has an '18 Crosstrek (loaded up, Limited model) and based on our experience, even with the reduced power, I believe the enhanced safety, cargo utility, lower CoG, easier maintenance and other features that match or exceed the Mazda put it quite a bit ahead.
The system does transfer power to the back instantaneously when needed. But it's not technically full-time, that's true.
The CX-30 uses tons of sensor data to predicatively go into AWD mode as needed while driving. Rock crawling at a low speed is not a good comparison to your safety scenario you raised (slipping that requires immediate action). Also while I think the crosstrek looks great, long term reliability especially the CVT is a concern (the 6AT has been used in multiple mazda vehicles since 2013, engine since 2014). I dont think the subaru has easier maintenance or higher safety rating than the mazda either.
@@BoogieDownProduction Subaru's AWD system (with tons of sensors, too) has been widely accepted as the system to beat for years (outside of full-lock systems like Jeep's for trail use). There are innumerable vids demonstrating its capabilities on all their vehicles except the BRZ. It's almost impossible to strand one outside of high-centering, and even that's hard to do (also, 8+ inches of ground clearance). The system operates all four wheels independently, so even with a single wheel being the only wheel with traction, the car will move.
There was a reliability question at the beginning of the CVT production that turned out to be a non-issue from what I know, though it prompted Subaru to extend the drivetrain warranty for that component. That trans has been in production since at least 2014 as well. We've got it in our '14 Forester with no issues in slightly under 100k miles...it operates flawlessly.
Subaru did have some oil consumption issues in engines produced years ago, but that seems to have been addressed according to reports. In a combined 125k miles on our two, I have only had to add a quart between changes once after a long, mountainous road trip (about 5k miles after a change).
On the maintenance issue...ever change a Subaru oil filter? Mazda? I can do a full maintenance cycle on ours including oil, filter, tires and fluids, with no jack (LOVE that ground clearance) in 10 minutes or less in our driveway.
I’m pretty sure 90% of people that get a cx30 aren’t going off roading in it so why this type of comparison was necessary is beyond me. The reason the cx30 is the better vehicle than the crosstrek is because the HP and torque blow it out of the water and no CVT. I live in Colorado and CVTs are no good in the mountains. They can not climb and will eventually fail. I’ve learned this from experience - you will never get to the Continental Divide in a crosstrek. I now own a Mazda CX-5 and no issues climbing or with the AWD system. Crosstrek might be amazing going over boulders due to the ground clearance but that vehicle will never get to that type of terrain in the first place if you live in Colorado so what’s the point.
@@orlandos2000 Our experiences are different with regards to the CVT. We've driven our '14 Forester 2.5L with CVT all over the West, over the Rockies, South to the Grand Canyon and beyond, fully loaded with a top carrier without a stumble. Never hit CO though. Maybe the roads are steeper.

whats the story with the acceleration run in sport on the dirt? the back tires are dragging (locked) for nearly half a foot? were you brake torqueing it? or had the parking brake on?
Did a bunch of runs. Guess that one the brakes (preload) were released a bit later than usual.
Ryan, one things you haven't mentioned on you, very cool videos... do you take air out when you do the trails??
If we do remove air it’s specified in the review. Normally we don’t because manufactures want us to run stock tires at stock psi on their test vehicles.

I think they raised the ground clearance to 8.0 inches on more recent models.
They have weird ways of measuring their clearances and provide several numbers depending on the deparment that provides the data. (PR and Marketing both use different numbers.)
Who in their right mind would take a car like this on a trail like this ? It isn't meant for this type of road .. A level dirt trail but not rocks like this
