Virtual Vikings: Learn how to Braid with a Viking

Discover how the Vikings might have created braids to decorate clothing and make cords with Ermingard, a member of our JORVIK Viking Centre team.
In this video, Ermingard demonstrates finger braiding and wheel braiding to create simple decorative cords. Whether the Vikings used wheels for braiding is unknown, but fragments of braided yarn have been excavated in York and elsewhere. The method for producing those braids is thought to be tablet weaving, where yarn is woven on a small loom with suspended tablets separating the threads to make intricate patterns.
