Senior actuarial Mathematics major here, I would like to correct you on your assumption that actuarial math is very specialized but in fact it's more broad than the general math majors. Depending on schools, actuarial math curriculum cosists of a mix of calculus 1-3, diffeq, linear algebra, proof-based math, financial math, probability and statistics, accounting, economics, finance, econometrics and programming. Though it emphasizes on financial Mathematics and statistics aspect of it, the overall knowledge you get can help you lend career in business and accounting. Or you can go ahead with graduate degree in economics or programming. As you mentioned earlier, SOA exams are extremely hard and most students don't end up becoming actuaries. The most common careers for acturial math majors are financial analyst, accountant and data analyst. So you see they are basically finance people with an extensive knowledge of Mathematics
Bruh! Thanks for sharing your views. Totally respect what you said
@@ShaneHummus Shane, he's right, and, the unemployment rate of actuarial science majors is extremely low. They are not all becoming actuaries because the exams are tough as balls.
Thats kind of why I picked it because if I dont become an actuary I still have a math degree, stats degree, and an econ minor or major is I want
I have a question. After studying actuarial science can someone later go on to grad school for applied mathematics or CS?
Could you become a Statistician with a actuarial mathematics major?
Currently working on an Applied Mathematics degree with a minor in Computer Science, studying to become an actuary! I love math and finance so this seems like the perfect career choice for me :D
What do you mean by minor?
@@Lazymath007_ It's like a mini-major, a very popular choice if you want to gain some knowledge in another subject but don't want to double-major
Great choice! I graduate this year with the same degrees.
My confession...I have a B.S. in Mathematical Analytics and Operations Research and have previous internship experience as a Data Analyst. 6 months later...still struggling to land a job in my field, but I won't give up.
Sorry to hear that James.. Just keep grinding.. Best of luck!
How are you doing now man?
Very informative and true. Math degree has a ton of potential, and great future prospects. However, it absolutely helps to have a career field in mind. Math is very broad but it qualifies for a lot of technical jobs. Focusing on one field choice makes this degree very great.
Econ/Math is pretty much necessary if you want to go into grad level Econ

Video Idea: the best countries to study abroad
Thank you so much for encouraging me with this video! Currently considering which graduate school I should go to and which major I should choose for graduate school (either I go for mathematics or astrophysics). I'm thinking maybe a Master's degree is probably easier to get than a doctoral degree, since the latter takes at least 6 years to get usually.
Or I could go for Applied Mathematics. The trouble is that I am not too confident with my ability to handle graduate school.
You can actually just straight up major in applied mathematics. This puts you adjacent to physics, statistics, data science, engineering, and even computer science.
Quantitative economics or econometrics is something I'll definitely consider! I'm already working on an economics major and I signed up to take extra math courses in the spring so I'm already on the right path!
That's great Veronika.. Wishing you good luck
Do econometrics with statistics, thatâs even better. Bayesian statistics combined with regression analysis and some coding skills is used for many financial firms
Thanks for the videos! Can you make one related to health informatics?
Maybe in the future
I'm pairing my physics degree with an art & design degree so I can design the pictures/images in physics and math text books
Damn thatâs a cool idea.
Nice plan
Wow, nice idea
Cant a physicist just pay a good designer to do draw their designs? I honestly don't see why they'd need someone with a physics degree to draw it lol.
@@naughti_penguin2340 that's what they currently do, yes. I'm going into physics teaching but rather than taking the typical track, I'm doing it my own way, principally because I don't think most hs physics teachers have the depth of knowledge the field deserves. Additionally, there is a struggle in getting students to understand the course material. This may just be due to the difficulty of the content, but I want to be able to have the ability design object lessons myself and customize them for my students.
One really does not HAVE to double-major in Math and Computer Science. Computational Mathematics (my major) can accomplish that while filtering out certain theoretical Math and Computer Science courses.
Note that the highest growth forecast is for Stats and OpsResearch, higher even than for CS.
Keep up the good work Shane!
Thanks
I graduated with a math degree in 2019 and I'm yet to be in a career yet. I'm teaching myself SQL server and Python, as well as refreshing on statistics. I feel like this video was made for me. Thank u.

Thanks for the video, Shane. Have you ever considered making a video about what itâs like being a CZcamsr, and your long term plans for the channel?
Hey Tony! You're welcome. I might actually do that in the future
Really enjoying the content. Perhaps you could make a video talking about how careers effect so much of your life. Where you live, how often you can travel, how easily you can meet new people, make friends, date, or do meaningful things. Kind of encouraging younger viewers to think about what really matters to them before choosing a career. A video talking about where the hubs of career opportunities are and the pros and cons of each city would be great too.
Noted Tony. That's a good suggestion
I might double major and have one of my majors be statistics. Iâm more than happy to have #8 on this list
Nice! sounds like a good plan

You forgot to mention that actuaries have to take so. many. exams.....So you can't just take a couple of extra classes as a math major and expect to go into that field....you'll have to pass all of those exams and unless you also major in actuarial science it is very highly unlikely you'll be able to pass any of the more specific and technical exams.
Best environmental/sustainability related degrees? Or careers
Best careers that are not in a 9-5 office setting?
Thanks for the suggestion Ben. Stay tuned for that
Shane I love ur vids but people who genuinely enjoy mathematics as a science would never be satisfied with engineering math, and probably wouldn't enjoy it very much. Engineering isn't a math degree, engineering and math majors both do math, but they do very different math alot of the time , and the math they do share is approached in a very different way. I don't think engineering should be in a list of math degrees in my opinion, as for computer science, it's literally a branch of math so. Calculus is very very far from the whole picture of math, and engineers primarily focus on calculus. I'm assuming people who like math as a science wanna get careers that they can get into by watching this vid, those ppl wouldn't enjoy engineering very much.
Solid point
Could you make a video about chemical engineering

I'm 18 yrs old who's taking a gap year and planning to get a masters in Data Science. What pre-data science degrees do you think would be best? So far, I've settled for a CS major that minors in statistics and economics.
Why not get your bachelor's in data science?
@@The_Original_Hybrid do not get bachelors in data sci and would avoid masters in data sci. Do math undergrad and either stats or comp sci masters
@@jmccullough975 That's BS. I'm currently doing a bachelor's in DS, then I'll do my master's in DS, too. It's definitely the best degree.
Why the fuck would you want to do a degree in CS, when DS only uses a small subset of CS techniques? Also, a DS degree is mostly statistics with some CS. Most of the stuff you'll learn during a CS degree will be irrelevant to DS.
@@The_Original_Hybrid data science degrees are cash grabs for university. Very little rigour and actual math and CS. Very superficial understanding. Sorta like a business anayltics degree as compared to a stats degree. You would MUCH be better off getting a hard quantitative degree such as physics, Electrical or computer engineering or math.
@@jmccullough975 That's just not true. My courses are very mathematically rigorous. You're speaking from a place of ignorance.

But how can you work as an actuary with only a bachelor degree? Wouldn't it be better if it was the median pay among "real" actuaries that has passed all the exams.

You donât need a specific degree to work as an actuary. Most jobs want you to have passed 2, 3 exams
I'm confused. On bls, it says there are 105,100 jobs available for operations research analysts, but when i type that job title into monster or linkedin only around 300 jobs shows up?

Hi,
Can someone please recommend a good USA university to do an online undergraduate degree in mathematics ? Are online mathematics degrees worth equally as a in-class degree?
In class is worth a lot more.
Study with the Open University.
@@hj2479 No it isn't.
@@The_Original_Hybrid If you go to a good reasonably priced uni it is very much worth it. I know some brilliant folks up at Waterloo in the mathematics department, that kind of untapped knowledge and learning between each student and faculty is hard to beat when you are in an online class. On top of that, online classes and degrees are often looked down upon to this day. You do applied math with a second major in comp sci and maybe a minor in finance at Waterloo and you could be working at a great firm like two sigma in a couple years time, and trust me when I say that is a great work environment, you don't get that kind of access to recruitment and respect when you have a online degree. I tend to only recommend online classes for specific topic oriented learning that you may need to do on the side while you are working on something, because by that point you have a good formative background to work from.
@@hj2479 So you're telling me that an online master's degree in ML & data science from one of the top 10 universities in the world isn't respected? You're ignorant.

I need advice on a major! I have to declare in 2 weeks and I'm torn between math and CS. According to US news my University is ranked #13 in the country for CS and #16 for math.
My career goal: I want to go get a Ph.D., work in research, and stay in Academia. My research interests are in the theoretical side of Computer Science, or anything dealing with major honestly!
I feel like I'm more passionate about Math. I'm pretty bad at programming and got into CS because of my love for math. However, I'm still fairly new at doing proofs. My advisors say I can't go wrong with either of these choices and it seems like everyone I talk to is telling me both work. I just can't choose! Both can lead me to my career goal. I'm more interested and excited about math but worry it's not practical enough :/ Can anyone offer me advice on which one to major in? If I choose CS I will JUST be getting a CS degree but if I do math I will minor in CS. I don't have the time to double major.
Courses I'm taking regardless: Programming 1, Programming 2, Calculus (1-3), Linear Algebra, Discrete Math, Cryptography, Numerical Linear Algebra, and Combinatorics.
Courses unique to CS major: Programming 3, Intro to Computer Engineering, Machine Organization, Algorithms, Mobile App Development, Software Engineering.
Courses unique to math major + CS minor: Real Analysis, Abstract Algebra, Elementary Topology.
So yeah, CS requires more classes than the math major + CS minor. There are fewer courses for the math major but I'm worried about how I'll handle those 3 proof heavy math courses. I wish I had more time to decide!
You said you you're more passionate about math, so I would go with that and minor in CS. There are loads of free resources online that will teach you important computer science concepts. Also what do you want your PhD in? Depending on what it is, a foundation in math may help you a lot. Also, yeah proofs are tough but like everything in math, it requires practice. I would also like to see other people's input
Can You choose to make a double major at this point? If You can then do it.
One of the professors at my university did Math undergrad with a CS PhD.
Should I drop out of high school and learn coding so I can become a software engineer and dev or go to college and study CS and get in debt?? đ§đ§ I need answers plz
You have to think it over and plan.. Depends really on what you're planning for your future
Id say graduate high school because very few non entry level jobs will accept no highschool degree. Also, community college offers a wide range of opportunity for way cheaper!
Do not drop out of high school unless youâre already making money while youâre in HS. Get the diploma and study coding on the side
Definitely don't drop out of high school, it's an amazing place to hone in on skills that could even be used for coding in the future and, high school is also free lol. Idk if your school offers a CS class but if it does you could start there
DO NOT drop out of high school and miss college. The as long as you dont overpay for Harvard or something stupid like that you could easily pay off your student loans with a CS degree within 5-8 years. Also community college is a great way to get the first 2 years of a 4 year degree out of the way for less than $3000 total. I live in the bay area and I can tell you right now that pretty much every major company, business, and government agency in the silicon valley, Seattle, Silicon Beach, or San Diego will immediately throw out your resume if your not pursuing a relevant degree
Is the tech industry boring?

Relativity matters. For lawyers too much supply for lack of demand, while for technology it's the opposite.
