I got a computer science degree in 1996, thinking it would be a meal ticket for life. I worked for 20 years in IT, and then suddenly my skills were obsolete and I couldn't get another job. Now I am studying to be a nurse.
True! Age could be a factor in this field
Hi sir! I was curious why your skills became obsolete. As somebody from a non-computer science background I presumed you might have been in a better position. This is sad to hear and I also wish you the best of luck with your schooling.

I am sorry to hear about this, but how does your skill become obsolete?
My dad got the exact same problem, now he has a music store and once in a while he checks on my laptop

As a current CS major who is thinking of adding math as a double major, this makes me feel a little better considering the academic beating I'm going through right now.
Yeah CS school is hell but itâs also interesting and rewarding, just a lot of work
Best of luck Matthew
Do it. Math is much less work than CS in my opinion. That's because as long as you understand something, proving it is very easy, because it's all theory. A proof can be written in one line. 10 proofs and you have a problem set finished. In CS, it can take a lot of time to prove you can do something since you have to actually grind out the application.
In liberal arts, it takes freaking ages to prove something, since they make you write all those damn essays. I spent about an hour a week per class on hw for my math degree. Ez pz.
Also, to save time elsewhere, I just didn't attend my business classes and aced all of them. They put the notes online and it's so easy to understand... What's the point of wasting time in class? Beating the curve there is easy because, you guessed it, those students suck at math.
@@michaelcallahan8412 if you think math is much less work, then you are either a genius or someone who hasn't touched upon advanced analysis n stuff
@@michaelcallahan8412 Most of it is kind of incorrect. You need problem solving skills in math. Most of the time you'll be staring at a problem waiting for inspiration to hit you. And sometimes things will start to work and you'll have no idea how you got close to solving it. If you think it's easy then try solving the reimann hypothesis or try proving the Wallis product in an entirely new way. Chances are you'll probably never be able to solve both of them even after spending a lifetime because many mathematicians have dedicated their lives to solve the former problem and none of them have succeeded so far

High demand isn't necessarily good. Especially if you're a teacher. Jobs are always in demand due to the high turnover rates.
I worked with a bunch of engineers in my last job. Lovely people but seriously lacking in social skills.
Thanks for leaving your insights
We get paid to solve problems... not to socialize đ€·đ»ââïž
@@bdm408 Yeah well, most employers aren't locked away in a box alone all day and have to interact with others as part of a job. Social skills are important in any job. Knowing how to hold a conversation, knowing when the conversation is over, very important skills. Lol
@@gdaymates431 as an engineer I beg to differ... if u have direct interaction with people, such as management, then sure itâs necessary to have a certain level of social skills... but when you are getting paid to solve issues and design and to research, well simply put, your productivity will always trump the need for social skills
@@bdm408 I don't agree. Social skills are important for any job unless you're sitting in a light tower somewhere on an island with no people.

Thank you for spotting light on Business Majors. It takes time management organizational skills and attention to detail to be able to excel. Also a lot of collaboration with team members to work on other projects Itâs a lot easier said than done but itâs pretty good area to get into.
My pleasure!
Iâve been stressing fearing Iâm heading in the wrong direction with pursuing my business major, but this put me at ease. I was watching this video to get some idea of what else is out there and was happy to find my major in the #2 spot. I feel a lot better
cheers!
Great video, Shane! To add, I've never met anyone that has regretted a business degree - its versatility cannot be understated, as you can take this degree to just about any industry or vertical. I talk quite a bit about MBAs on my channel, and for those that DO regret their undergrad degree, MBAs are typically their way out in getting something valued highly in the market and advancing their career.
That said, everyone will have different goals, so a top MBA that costs $200K isn't going to be right for alot of folks. Many can do just as well with a far less expensive MBA. And if there's concern that business degrees are too general, many programs offer specializations/concentrations that can differentiate it.
Right Richard.. I mentioned that here
And masters abroad shouldn't be overlooked. They can be a great opportunity to learn a new language and get that degree in your native language for cheap

Main drawback is that the field is introvert and male dominated which can make things difficult socially, but at least youâll have money and knowledge right?
What about the job market though, isn't it bad for math majors who don't like coding?
Is it easy to get jobs with a math degree?

I really enjoy your channel. I started university this year with a major in History and Journalism, though where I live it can propel me to work in media and get my masters, I've realized and accepted that there are other ways to pursue my passion without majoring in it. You really helped me to align my career goals with a suitable major (econ) and from then I've just been obsessed with your channel. I really appreciate what you do!!!!
I appreciate that Abee
What makes Econ degree suitable for you? Itâs mostly math and statistics, and you will work in Journalism.. Am I right? I donât mean to make you feel regretful, Iâm just thinking of choosing an Econ major but Iâm too hesitant..
Journalism and Economics are two different career paths for me, they won't mix. A career in Economics is what I'm striving for, and a side job working in Journalism (such as content writing, content creation, simple things that don't take up much of time). I chose Economics for the same reason I chose Journalism, I want to work in a field that is insightful and helpful to not just myself but the community. Economics can be profitable if you're looking for a job in the right places (for me I'd want to work in the government, ie Public Sector, it pays well and I could get alot of privileges). The math isn't overly complicated if you're not an A+ math student, and if you like researching or just getting down with reading, analyzing data, and interpretation, you'll find economics to be fun, imo.
@@americangangsta3947 do it for you, there's no harm in trying. If you're in university, take a first year course in it and see if you like it. If you're still in hs, look up free econ courses and economic classes videos on CZcams to see if its something you're truly interested in. If you're up to it, you can try finding an assignment to do. I live in the Caribbean, and we have Economics at the hs level, assignments practiced at the CAPE are equivalent are equivalent to what is done in the first year of uni. So look up 'CAPE UNIT 1 Economics examination'

Lately, I became slightly interested in investing and the Stock market, these kind of stuff... so I found the best majors for this is Econ, Finance or Business... So when I think about it as: I will get the Bachelors degree ( To be considered educated and please my parents) in something related to Stock trading and investing, and then I will work with myself in investing or whatever.. or go to law school(have a tiny interest in it), I say thatâs good...... but when I think about it as: I donât need it, I can invest without a degree, I donât even like studying things like statistics, and I donât like the kind of jobs it gets me(fin.advisor, analyst,...) , it will be useless...I then feel itâs not what I want....... For those interested in engineering, I don't regret getting my Masters in Engineering. It costs me about $26k for two years of graduate school and I'm currently making about $80k a year. If you really focus on it, you can get rid of that student debt in like 1-2 years. Right now, times are shaky but your engineering degree and the skills you learned along the way will be valuable for the rest of your life.
What type of engineering? And what engineering would you recommend personally, considering jobs, and demand?
Welcome
80k with a masters isnât that much, even for starting
@@tonypantoja2193 Goverment engineering jobs are really underrated. Goverment engineers have much more stable jobs and while you may not start with the highest pay, the more experience you gain the more you will make. I know engineers that started as interns at goverment engineering programs back in their undergrad and then got jobs in those same government positions right out of college while doing their masters. Decades later most of them are doing extremely well off, a lot of them used the many years of experience in goverment to transition over to industry management positions but there are also some who went into the higher level goverment management positions which are jobs that are extremely hard to lose. Goverment benefits are also great. It might not be the most glamorous work but it is really stable and it isn't mindless work either.
In my country if you get high grades in high school you wonât be paying even for college at all. Engineering is perfect for me on top of that I got Aâs on all of my subjects so Iâm studying in college right now for free (the government chooses students with high grades and pays for them depending on the major). What i've learned from these videos is your major is what you make of it. You need to have a plan for what you want to do and maneuver your way to it if it's not something set like nursing. Like I went from bio to psychology in undergrad. I worked in a preschool and became an ABA tech because I knew I wanted to get my master's to help children but didn't know what. That lead me to speech therapy and I am in a master's program now. The only thing I regret is not finding speech therapy before my last semester in undergrad but working with special needs children, and some VERY behavioral has actually helped me handle clinical situations and given me that leg up my peers do not have.

Thank you for this video, Iâm so stuck now with what I want to do aha... was thinking of biotech but after watching your other video kind of put off. What do you think about something like âComputer Science and Economicsâ?
Those 2 choices are both solid. Plan it out.. Good luck!
What about satisfying job list? I am trying to make a decision whether I should go into education or nursing( any health related job). Its difficult to decide.:( thanks for the video!
I'm a broke ass teacher. STAY AWAY FROM EDUCATION UNLESS YOU WANT TO LIVE WITH YOUR PARENTS FOREVER.
Thank you, I am in high school and I am trying to get an idea of what I want to study.
Welcome Kim
Thank you so much for these videos. They are so helpful!! What do you think about logistics and supply chain management degrees? I have a BA in Transportation and logistics. I am thinking about pursuing a masters in Business Administration.
You're very welcome!
Do you have a video on the most popular business majors to the least popular? If not, can you make one!?! I would like to know which business majors may become saturated in the future due to current popularity. Thanks for your videos!
Business Degree Tier List (Business Majors Ranked)

I'm a freshman and education major! You should do a vid on ways to save money in college!! That would be helpful!
Great idea!!
Nah bro don't do education unless you love teaching. Education degree gets paid a shitty amount of salary
Yeah, I wouldn't consider the career if I didnt think I'd enjoy it.
@@sarahrhoades9299 people think they enjoy many things until they actually experience it. I thought I like computer science until I actually took a class in it. Just do your research thats all I'm saying. No harm intended.
@@eboyeman8457 hey, do you have a snapchat? I wouldn't mind asking you about your career then
Could you do a video on which business degrees with concentrations do the best?
Thank you, I've learned so much from you, in hope to continue to learn more!
Happy to know that. Stay tuned for more videos. Thanks for the support.
Therapist is a hard job on your body. but the knowledge you learn is invaluable not financially but simply the fact that its almost as if having a community doctor at home gives your relatives peace.
And because of that I would study a healthcare degree as my first degree and then study business for my grad degree. Apparently itâs not a must for you to have computer science degree to get. A high paying job so I would just add computer analytics course on the side
This was good, thanks
Glad you liked it!
A valuable business degree is a major in accounting. In any business everything eventually goes through the accounting department.
What do you think of double majoring in international business?
With an accounting degree
This is awesome đđœ , very glad that I came across your channel. Can you please give me your feedback on going back to school to become a guidance counselor? Iâve done some research and it says I should begin with a bachelors in behavioral science, I donât want to take on debt for no reason .
What did you end up doing?
@ShaneHummus
Video Topics I would definitely tune into... Navigating ageism in the Information Technology field (or any field...Hence you mentioned the average age of a Coder is 32). Benefits of having a degree and a skill. Internships and other opportunities to push your career further.
Thanks for watching Atiya
I graduated in Applied Mathematics. I do not regret it even though I'm not currently working in the field I want to. Here's hoping I will đ€đŒ
Thanks for sharing that James
Hidden gem career would be a good video idea. Also I gently smashed the like buttonđ
Noted.. Thanks
I second this
Private equity
You give very good content. I love your videos. Keep up the good work. Greetings from South Africa.
Wow, thanks for the support
My dad has a phd in engineering and in nuclear physics. The specific thing he does there are only 3 companies you can work at in the US, but at the same time the specific type of work my dad does there are not a lot of people going for that particular work. And the kicker is itâs not high paying, but the need for What he does will always be there. He really likes what he specifically does and finding out that only a handful of people in the world can handle all the schooling for that career. To be fair his back up was Astronomy. But there was an influx of people going into that degree not realizing that itâs best to have a phd, and not many end up actually completing the bachelor before going another route. Only a few get the phd. Which sucks because all those people that just dropped out, could of given him a spot.
Bottom line just because you can buy a keyboard, turntables, pro tools, mixer, studio speakers, and a microphone doesnât mean you should. Just because you can afford the equipment doesnât doesnât mean you are a do. You need to have knowledge of music theory, composition, tempo. Thatâs like someone going and buying a violin and that making you a violinist.
Besides your CZcams career you need to work as school counselor. U guide students very well đ
I'm majoring in computer engineering, this made me feel a lot better
Good Video. Thumbs up!
As a business major I love my degree and often time forget that other degrees only allow you to work for very specific companies and professions while a business degree allows you to work from almost anywhere physically or remotely at nearly any company. Glad to see it ranked high on the list.
Same dude, love finance!
3:45 thanks for doing healthcare admin degree
, i'm currently going for my MPA in Healthcare Admin concentration. I was so scared I've picked the wrong major
Good luck Jimbo
As someone who's has a health admin degree and works in the field I can tell you it's an excellent choice!! The field is growing like crazy and tbh the work is very interesting
@@IncomeOverOutcome what was your starting salary?
Its not a bad choice, but make sure you get experience. Try to get a part time entry level job at a hospital.
@@taressastraughter7788 Which type of experience?
I'm in college in the UK (age 16-18) and I am thinking of taking an engineering geology and geotechnics degree, so it is making me really happy to hear that it is one of the best!!
Best of luck Marie
Your channel is very valuable! I hope people really take advantage. Iâve been trying to find any info you may have on Public Health degrees? Bachelors and or Masters level?
Stay tuned for that
I'm from, Tanzania studying in India computer engineering, really inspired by your channel, because I studied business subjects, but someone and I was about to study Accontacy but I was suggested to study computer engineering by my teacher, my mom was so worrying about it but I was trying to convince her, she thought she will be loosing her money in university ,so I just continued to study computer engineering, but daily finding computer engineering videos to be inspired, I'm really inspired.
Pls donÂŽt become a scammer lmao
As someone who works in healthcare, I can tell you we highly highly value engineers and IT staff
Good to know Viviana
Do you know any medical students who have an Engineering degree?
@@awesome4781 Yes engineers can definitely get into med school, just make sure to get a high GPA. Engineering is pretty hard but if your able to get a high GPA in a hard major it can definitely make you look better. And in case you don't get into med school, you still have good job opportunities depending on the engineering field you go into. Just make sure you take electives cources that are prerequisites to get into med school in your engineering degree.
Have you considered a different format ? I enjoy watching your videos, but you may end up of topics very soon. IDK, maybe a podcast or something, maybe discuss some career transitions, or invite someone successful in their careers to share their advices in their areas.
I might make a formal announcement about that soon đ
Hi, I'm a high school student and applied as a nutritional science major. I want to apply to physician assistant programs later on and was wondering about your thoughts because your older videos did not recc nutritional science/dietetics majors. Love your vids btw
I am doing the same thing as well, except Iâm applying for food science and nutrition. I really want to know the job scope in food science just in case I donât want to study further.
Either Physical Therapy (High job satisfaction, decent pay) or Software Engineer (Outstanding pay, only need B.S or self taught)
If I could go back in time the first thing I would do is to tell Shane to major in Computer Science đđ
đđ
Seriously! No video of shane is complete without computer science
I'm so glad I discovered this channel. I'm a senior in highschool, and I picked Chemistry as my major in my college applications. I'm not super sure on what the outcome is gonna be, but I hope I don't regret it! đ€
Edit after watching the most regretted majors video: Oh no lol
I just came through your videos...iv been binge watching...
