My Dad (1933-2011) made their emblems back in the 70's. Jerry called a couple times to discuss the idea the embroidery details. I was a child but I remember my Father commented on how smart Jerry was to collaborate and venture. He had a bunch of pokers in the fire. Rest in power Jerry.
Just to answer a couple of questions raised on this thread of comments: The song was originally written by Robert Hunter for the New Riders. John Dawson came up with a few lines, David Nelson contributed the decending bass line intro, but Jerry Garcia, then pedal steel and banjo player for the NRPS took the song home overnight and wrote the bridge. The next day he announced that he was going to record it with the Grateful Dead, not the NRPS. He was Jerry, so he got to do things like that....the song really embodies the union of the Dead and the Riders. Garcia, Hunter, Nelson, Dawson... started out as very young, almost kids, playing together, and their music continues to provide enjoyment to listeners and influence to young musicians almost 60 years after they first started playing together.
Nice synopsis, Keith. I have a silly question, though... is this song about scoring and shooting H? A lot of the lyrics sound like H references. Not a junkie myself, but I absolutely LOVE this song.
I hope you know that the New Riders of the Purple Sage did this way before the dead and Garcia what is singing with the New Riders. Can't believe you want to give the dead credit for this song, as in grateful
Este sonido, estas guitarras... hacen que el corazón casi se me salga del pecho. Dame unos amigos, unas guitarras acusticas, árboles y hierba bajo el radiante sol... ¡y seré feliz! What a song!
Gene Fowler Hi Gene I sawNRPS at the bottom of Squaw valley many moons ago 1984ish yep miss old Calfornia ....glad to be home too... Miss old Townes van Zandt and Guy Clark from your neck of the woods...
love that Jerry played steel peddle on the fisrt record. honest guy saying could go on, it's a full time job playing a steel peddle and lets not forget he had a full time band. lol
I've got two reasons why i cry away each lonely night. First one's named Sweet Anne-Marie and she's my heart's delight. Second one is prison bait and the sheriff's on my trail. If he catches up to me I'll spend my life in jail...
Respectfully you quoted the lyrics wrong.. What Jerry saying, and what Robert Hunter wrote was "Second one is prison, baby, The sheriffs on my trail." Not prison bait. That changes the protagonist's whole scene.
"The song was originally written by Robert Hunter for the New Riders" but the melody line is not exactly the same. Which is the original, and is it written down somewhere?
The grateful dead’s version is so draggy u can grow a beard before it concludes. This version is way better in my opinion and that’s the only one that counts around here. lol.

Rest in power Jerry.

Keith Gorgas karma
David Nelson and Friends 3/4/18 @ Great American in SF, I got my ticket!

Ruffmike1 yes Robert, the song is referencing heroin. Suzy, the underground queen, is indeed heroin. Good pickup.
You hit the nail right on the head.
Freaking GREAT music, and I'm GRATEFUL for it..!

Got it backwards, my friend: The Grateful Dead do a very nice version of a NRPS song.
Wow, my favorite Dead song but don’t think I ever heard the NRPS version - it’s excellent.
What a classic
one of my favorite songs if all time
Love this song ... no matter who does. The lyrics are very awesome!!!
Its an NRPS song that was taken over by the Grateful Dead. Hunter wrote the original lyrics for NRPS.
it's like a movie
Este sonido, estas guitarras... hacen que el corazón casi se me salga del pecho. Dame unos amigos, unas guitarras acusticas, árboles y hierba bajo el radiante sol... ¡y seré feliz!
What a song!

I have listened to this album hundreds of times and swear that this song is not on it. Guess I'll take another look and listen
Likewise.
Great version tho!
It's not on it. Great album, though.
Not on my original vinyl either - never heard this version before
love that Jerry played steel peddle on the fisrt record. honest guy saying could go on, it's a full time job playing a steel peddle and lets not forget he had a full time band. lol
🍒 garcia also played peddle steele on C.S.N.Y. 'Teach Your Children' 🎵
Only one d in pedal, fellas. My Sho-Bud pedal steel has 20 strings, 2 necks, 8 pedals and 5 knee levers. No peddles.
one of my favorite garica & hunter songs
Pure refreshing.
Marmaduke told me he co-wrote it with Senor Garcia.
I've got two reasons why i cry away each lonely night. First one's named Sweet Anne-Marie and she's my heart's delight. Second one is prison bait and the sheriff's on my trail. If he catches up to me I'll spend my life in jail...
Doesn't get much better then those lyrics..Good post.
Respectfully you quoted the lyrics wrong.. What Jerry saying, and what Robert Hunter wrote was "Second one is prison, baby, The sheriffs on my trail."
Not prison bait. That changes the protagonist's whole scene.
@@infraredruby2 I thought it was"prison, babe."
With Jerry Robert wrote many many grate songs
Kenny Loggins does a nice version, slowed it down in 1972
amazing
I'm learning this song on bass
Hey man, did you get it down yet? Bassists are fucking awesome!
+JackAndCokeDotCom yeah I can play it
Can you play all of Phil's parts on American Beauty?
American Beauty wow
souvenirs, souvenirs, amis diaboliques
have this on vynil
Bless Robert Hunter!
shut up I just want to dance lol woooooooooo
🐸
See u at Bb Kings
Not David Nelson, John Dawson. He and Garcia wrote the music and Robert Hunter wrote the lyrics.
Anyone know what year this version is from?
I never heard that before, interesting. However the Grateful dead DID record it a year prior to NRPS so it is their song. Thanks for the info though.
nolanfan626 amen
Amen
Is this song a metaphor for something, or someone, I think I am familiar with?
Robert Damora yes this song is referencing heroin.
robert hunter wrote this song and a few more the dead performed
NRPS performed this first. Sometimes with Garcia and Phil .
"The song was originally written by Robert Hunter for the New Riders" but the melody line is not exactly the same. Which is the original, and is it written down somewhere?
Marmaduke co wrote this song with Hunter and Garcia
Marmaduke tune first
not a patch on the dead version
Excellent!! Who was the lead guitar player??
I believe that would be David Nelson, does a nice job on this song
And Gary Vorgenson
Def not Nelson
*NOT STUDIO VERSION+*
Not exactly a Dead song per se since Dawson helped write it.
The grateful dead’s version is so draggy u can grow a beard before it concludes. This version is way better in my opinion and that’s the only one that counts around here. lol.
I call bullshit on this recording, this isn't the New Riders or the Dead, if it is you better post all the information.
