What a treat! To see John Dawson (rhythm guitar and vocals), David Nelson (lead guitar and back vocals), Buddy Cage (pedal steel guitar), Dave Torbert (bass and back vocals) and Spencer Dryden (drums) live was enough to put their fans in country music heaven, but to see Jerry Garcia (Fender Telecaster) and Sandy Rothman (banjo) was positively blissful. And to have that song recorded live on videotape? Awesome. Kids, this is what real music is like. Taylor Swift is all well and good, but you have to venture beyond your musical comfort zone and check out what we listened to back in the day. You’ll feel a whole lot better. I swear I ain’t lying.
Agreed indeed
Jerry is playing a Telecaster, not a Strat
@@williamjoyal3553 Nobody said he was. Put down the ganja.
@@williamjoyal3553that’s what he said
Todays date 12/9/23, Ijust happen to play this almost 50 years to the day , and it still kicks ass !!!
Don’t remind me of how far I go back.

It was released yesterday...😅
Love this song. Most underrated band of all time.
Ever heard of the Meters? They are the band that Jerry Garcia thought was the most underrated band of all time. And just to be clear, I saw the New Riders about thirty times in the seventies.
One of my all-time favorite bands. Funny that it started as a side project for Jerry, who always played banjo, pedal steel, etc.
This is great simply because it includes footage of Garcia playing a Telecaster which is extremely rare to see.
It's not Jerry it's David Nelson
Jerry is in there too.
And Jerry was skinny! This was An Evening with the Dead days.
saw them open for Grateful Dead and Jerry was on pedal steel!
Nice in the Bay Area? Or somewhere else?

@@ralphherman2122 musta been Panama Red, eh?
lucky!
I remember Jerry and Buddy on the stage at Kezar stadium 5/26/73. They were watching Ralph Mooney Waylon Jennings Pedal Steel player work his craft. I had the impression they were impressed by Ralph who was like 20 years older then them at the time.
Pick it moon! I beta the were versión impressed, he was the best picker ever. What a shame Jerry never used a tele with the dead , I bet tunes like Cumberland or truckin couldve been even better
I've seen a photo of Weir playing a Telecaster with the Dead, in '68 in (I think) Central Park.
Do you happen to have the first time NRPS played public? When the show was billed as Jerry Garcia and they came on stage unannounced. This was at Long Shoremans Hall in SF. A Hells Angeles party Billed Janis Joplin and Jerry Garcia. Garcia came out and said this is going to blow everybody's mind. He sat down and played steel string guitar that nite.
I was there. ! Buddy Cage was awesome that night. Still have a crush on that guy.
Jerry stepped up and just blistered a Telecaster solo.I love musicians with different guitars than we are used to
Exactly bro...my thoughts exactly....i was like.."Woah!...Jerry on a TELECASTER!...my eyes have never beheld this"!
Not Jerry, jeez
@@dre4011 It's David Nelson not Jerry

TOO COOL! jerry playing a Tele? WOW! Great post!!!!
I was just going to post about that! I’ve seen pics of Jerry playing a tele in the 90’s at some club in the Bay Area, but that was all I was are of...until seeing this clip. Very cool 😎
I'm like WTF? I'm sending this out. Jerry WORKED his butt off. No one could keep up with him. He was non stop. I LOVE MY BUDDY. It is ok if he doesn't like me. Hey by the way.
Yeah rare
Jerry was GRATE
Got to see them in the mid 70s opening for Golden Earring … was a spectacular night.
Buddy Cage and Jerry Garcia❤️
My favorite Jerry is country/bluegrass Jerry. Great vid. Thanks you.
love it. saw them together August 27th, 1972, when they joined the Grateful Dead journey to Veneta, Oregon.

Jerry Garcia, genius! Great person!
I'm so thankful for this more than you'll ever know. I'm also glad that your posting the live footage instead of plain audio. There are a few on here that was only video with no sound. Talk about torture............WHEW!!!! So yeah, thx a bunch for this.
How can you not love this?? How can you now absolutely love it.
I miss the riders, always a fun show
My favorite NRPS tune.
Lots of videos on CZcams claim to be showcasing "rare" footage - but this one delivers the goods! Rare as hen's teeth! Garcia on Tele AND in a tie-dye shirt? Lord have mercy! I love this song - it's a lot of fun to play - been playing it since it was new - and all these later...
How many teeth do hens have?😊
Sandy Rothman added so much. Awesome
a great rare footage-what a treat
Garcia stayed out back playing and then strutted out, the crowd went wild
I seen the New Riders in the late 70's right outside of Pittsburgh. On Rt. 8 in Hampton Twp. At the then V.I.P Lounge I believe it was called. Man I miss those days and old country rock music. The New Riders sounded great as always. They were a great band.
Buddy is brilliant as usual!
Love NRPS….when I saw them in mid 70’s or so Buddy Cage was on peddle steel. Saw them few times in upstate NY and Western MA back then.
me too...with my girlfriend Sunday Susie - married 43 yrs. They were the best, Lenox Music Inn
Saw them 3 times -- always a treat!
Really cool to see this video pop up . I was there !
We were so young!!!! I love it!
Thank you sooooooo much awesome, this kicks ass!!!! more if you plz

I was at this show!
Saw NRPS (w/Garcia on pedal steel) when they opened for the Dead in '71 at Bucknell U. in their highschool sized gymnasium. Ticket $5 😁.
NICE!! Very nice indeed!!! ID love to see more of their archive!!!!! Shaved Jerry!!!!
Thumbs up for the pedal steel guy…
All the videos in this line are old and fantastic. Happy days for me
Great clip rob, thanks- i put it up on the david nelson band facebook page
Buddy Cage was the best pedal player in our town.
😊
Buddy, Buddy, Buddy
Amazing to see himself playing a proper guitar for once.
I wish i was born a little earlier to catch this cool stuff in person. But all the better I'm 20 yrs old and have it at my fingertips 💁
I was there!!!!
One word AWESOME!!!!
I love the NRPS, have since their 1st album in 1970, thanks to Jer Bear for forming the New Riders, so Garcia could play pedal steal guitar with them, of course they continued after Jer left and Buddy played, love and miss Marmaduke (John Dawson) & David Nelson.❤❤❤This is one of hubbys favorite songs, he loves NRPS too, coz I introduced him long ago. Glendale Train is a favorite, we sing along to them all the time. My bestie, Nancy sent me a new NRPS embroidered patch for my jeans for Christmas. I used to draw that album cover all the time in college, I love the smoke signals NRPS debut album cover so much, love them so much & I am so glad I got to see them at a Day On The Green, Bill Graham concert where they opened for the Grateful Dead.😊
This is great!
At 4:45 Jerry Garcia rips that telecaster solo right behind a smiling Buddy Cage, who replaced Jerry on steel guitar in the NRPS - classic................!!
That doesn't look like Jerry
What stellar times man❤️
....the New Riders with Jerry and Sandy Rothman....are you kidding me!!!!...
Okay, this is rad!
I play a telecaster and know how masterful Jerry's work was.Hope to jam with Jerry and Marmaduke in heaven !

Wish the video/audio quality was better, but you can't argue with the performances! Killer solo by Buddy then Jerry!
Very cool. Thanks Rob!
Damn.....I must be burnt. I don't remember seeing this 2 years ago......but I guess I did.
Garcia con la telecaster!!!!!!!!! Mitico!!!!!
Sooooo totally aaaawesome!!!!!☺
My God, I haven't heard this in.....well..... a while.
Saw them in Asbury Park NJ in the early seventies. Buddy Cage!
Super!
Amos White was the baggage man, and he dearly loved his job,
The company, they rewarded him with a golden watch and fob,
Well Amos, he was a-markin'time, when the door blew off his car,
They found Amos White in fifteen pieces, fifteen miles apart.
That line always got me, maybe because my grandpa was a millwright who got killed on the railroad.
nice footage...I had seen Jerry with the Dead about a month and a half before this show in Denver
What a Combo!!
Awesome
I didn't realize they did it in A. 'love Marmaduke! Jerry pre-beard Telly, nice
There were men on horses men with guns and so sign of the law -- YIKES
David Nelson not only does great chicken pickin' on his electric guitar but his harmony vocals are great.
Saw NRPS in Atlanta that year . 51 years have past . If my math is right. How is that possible ?
I didn't know Jerry shaved his beard in 73. Live and learn.
Saw them I think in ‘75 at The Palomino in North Hollywood. So friggin’ good, I tell ya.
I bet Jerry loved playing with these guys. An ol’ picker Jerry was. Ya gots to lissen to “Old and in the Way”! Yee-haa kiddies. 🤠🤠🤠🤠🤠
Damn! Buddy Cage is RIPPING!
So cool how he was kinda hidden there!
