    for those wondering ... the rider in the back is the "athlete" competing ... they're blind or visually impaired
    up front, the "pilot" cannot be a professional ... but i think anything else goes.

    • @QboyRuLz
      @QboyRuLz Před 2 lety +7

      But it does not make sense. How is the pilot picked? He can also push the pedals, so what is stopping him? And another thing. One could argue that this pilot could be thinner so that it would not slow down the athlete. So how is he picked? Does he have the exact same measures as the athlete? Could not find any relevant answers on the internet regarding this particular topic.

      @@QboyRuLz if you look closely, the plate of the pilot is smaller than the athlete one, this way, the bigger plate is the one that controls the pedal rhythm and is the one making the wheel spin faster. The pilot is just moving his feet to keep the momentum but he cannot generate more power because he would need to pedal much faster. Hope I explained myself :)

    Question for all you cyclists out there. Is riding a two person bike like this faster than a single person bike? Obviously it wouldn't work for like mountain biking or something, but I'm wondering if it could be faster in a race like this.

    • @lukethiessen6335
      @lukethiessen6335 Před 2 lety +6

      100%. With cycling, the biggest hindrance is drag from the air. With this, you get twice the power with just about the same amount of drag as one person cycling. It's like a super efficient peleton (where riders are close to each other to use each other's slipstreams). I think there's some people whove tested 2 amateurs VS 1 pro and it's kinda close

      Luke's correct. Tandems are fast on the flats and insanely fast on the descents! Most have a third brake to reduce problems with brakes, wheels and tires overheating on steep descents.
      But they don't climb as well. Single riders will out climb equal riders on a tandem.
      And au contraire Christopher! Tandems work GREAT for mountain biking! It's a just a little different take on the same thing. Tight turns are more difficult. Clearing high obstacles and technical terrain can be tough. But at the same time, blasting through gnarly stuff can be easier - the longer wheelbase goes over stuff that would more easily disrupt a single bike. And you almost can't go over the handlebars! Oh, and rear wheel traction is AMAZING! It's so much fun.

      I assume you mean by what appears to be a "slow" start? No, that's the fact that they're using very "tall" gearing for this event. Tandems are really fast on the flats & descents. Since the track is flat, the tandem will reach higher sustained speeds than single riders. To ride optimally at higher speeds, the riders prefer higher gearing. But that's a disadvantage at the start when they have to totally mash to get things going.
      And they're pushing more than you'd EVER imagine! Track riders are pure animals. Just look at the toaster guy! His quads are inhuman! No, these guys are monsters.

      if this happens they will call you to get there and sniff all that gas before it affects the back rider, so your service will be fundamental for them to win the race.

      @@Aero_d "only way" ? they are not steering the bike. they are just pedaling. the same effect is achieved in a gym bike, by comparing each bike's speedometer+odometer, and as a bonus, the back guy will compete with others by their OWN effort, instead of counting on the front man's help.
