We took our new Traxxas Slash out to the track to practice for the upcoming race, and decided to bring along another short course truck for Nate to practice with as well. Nate picked the $160 ZD Racing short course truck, that we have recently featured on the channel. It is currently having some diff issues as shown in this video.
Surprisingly, the China off brand truck smoked the Traxxas Slash RC truck every time! Don't be mad at us, Traxxas fans. The ZD Racing truck is fully RTR and is CHEAPER, therefore, comparing dollars to dollars, the Slash had the advantage (the slash was in lipo mode). And no, this was not rigged. We bought the Slash for the 2wd brushed Stock Slash race class at our track, so we are wanting to get good at driving it.
Let us know your thoughts on the race and our racing technique in the comments below!

Should be able too swap in the diff from the stadium truck from zd racing.
Might be possible too just swap the front diff too the rear and vice versa & make it rwd.
Could perhaps just lock the rear diff with packing in some sponge or hotglue on the zd racing for some longevity without buying spare parts for it.

Any way that it turns out, the traxxas wins, because when you break something you drive 20 minutes to the hobby shop and get your parts. Or you buy the china car and wait a month or more for parts.

Also the Slash is a bash beast. That thing will crash so many times with very little harm done. You're likely to lose of all parts,Front hinge pins( bent), C- blocks, maybe an A arm,and also sometimes a loosened motor mount. With the occasional crapped out Spur/ pinion. I've flipped, rolled crashed,so many times in my 2wd Slash. Brushless Castle sidewinder. So much more power than stock . The thing holds up very well. I've ran it in the rain, mud gravel, snow( kinda lame being 2wd). and again the Slash maintains. The value is there, but you have to bash the truck for awhile before you actually appreciate it

Is this supposed to be a Traxxas bashing video? I'm not biased towards either of these brands but it seemed like the intention was to make the zd appear to be better regardless of specs. Id love to see you guys repeat this race with a 4x4 slash going against the zd truck. Imho traxxas is a little pricey but Theres a reason why their slash vxl 2w or 4wd isnt 160 dollars. A 4x4 brushless 10th scale for 160 is awesome especially if you're on a budget but I wouldn't buy one with any expectation of getting something like a slash vxl 4x4. I don't own either of these specific cars but I'm pretty confident that theres no way it's going to compete with a 4x4 slash vxl or even the rustler from build quality to lap time(with the same driver)
Anywho.. I love what you guys show on the channel and appreciate the time and money you put in to giving us a little preview of something we may like to purchase

If there were people that knew how to drive these I bet it wouldn’t have been very much difference in performance at all. It’s hard to watch these videos like this when they say stupid crap like it’s better than a traxxas or an Arrma or any name brand out there when they have no clue what the realization is when it comes to the total hobby experience. Sure save $30 or even $130 but in the end you still get a product that in total has no resale value, has no parts support, has terrible customer service if you can even find any for it, and in the next video they said the China one had already broke and they hardly ran it let alone bashed it.

This track is much like one I used to race on. Brings back a lot of memories. I only raced nitro, 2 wheel drive tho. Had a rustler, which took one heck of a beating. Then bought a used team associated rc10 stadium truck. Each had its own cornering style. The rustler, I just completely left off the throttle before the corner and coasted around it. Then hammered it again. Then the rc10 worked best to drift it around the corners since it had a lot better control. I put a Picco 15 engine in that one right before the track closed. That was a serious engine, it rode a wheelie every lap down the straight stretch. Quite the crowd pleaser. We also had Legends, Sprint car, Nascar, monster truck, and a few other classes each night. I ran 6 out of 8 classes one night. Talk about stress.

The track will get better as its used, I wouldn't shy away from 2wd just yet. You can adjust the suspension, lower it overall and set the ride high so the front sits just higher than the back
This will put more weight to the back to increase rear traction. Then dump the stock shock oil, try 20wt in the front and 20wt in the rear to start. You could also put a softer spring in the front (different soft spring not a collar adjustment) If there is a slipper on the Traxxas then loosen it until it slips like a foot on takeoff (on the racing surface) you can also put a softer compound tire in the rear if that's allowed. These are tips that will increase rear traction and make the car easier to drive fast. Try one at a time. Have fun!

You've gotten a lot of advice, but I don't know if anybody mentioned the "apex" of the turn. This in where you clip the inside of the track. You guys are both hugging the inside of the straight, which is an infinitely early apex. It's the slowest way through a turn. You need to try for a late apex. You should hug the outside of the straight, start your turn well before the end of the straight, and clip the inside just after the halfway point while accelerating. That's oversimplified, so you may want to look up a video of a late apex. I wish you guys the best of luck in your races, and most of all, HAVE FUN!!!

2wd SC is all about Tuning, and Throttle control. Make an effort while driving the Slash stick to focus on the proportional throttle, and make turning easier by easing off a bit. Stick class should allow some changes. Make sure the body mounts are as low as can be. Get that body lowered to help with the roll. Which is actually designed by Traxxas to happen The Slash body roll is completely intentional.,and is supposed to give a true sense of scale SST. It's not intended to race out of box.

I know if you put brushless motor in the Traxxas an change tires lower your shocks down. Change the shock oil to a lite weight. Because there is no jumps you dont need the shocks to move a lot. If you can change the spear gear to a bigger size. You will have all the speed you need. You can just change the back tires to a tread that will grip help coming out of the corners a. Get the Hot Racing oil filled diff for the Slash so you can at least tune it to the track. "stock slash" class ... yeah right the race officials will never check inside the gearbox. I would be very surprised if other people won't use the oil filled diff. Nothing is more competitive than stock classes guys, don't be fooled. Making the track damp would effect the performance the same for both the two wheel drive and four wheel drive would gain traction. So the four wheel drive would remain the same amount faster. Now if you added a lot of water and made the track muddy the four wheel drive would gain. But traction from four tires will always give you more speed as long as transfer case keeps up.

First off you can't drive a 2WD vehicle like a 4WD vehicle. 2WD you're guiding with your throttle and the steering is for minor changes in course. Whereas a 4WD you don't have to be as disciplined with the throttle. Besides that, you're not even making the best of your laps. Go wide and then go towards the middle in the corners and come back out wide for the straights.

Greatly appreciate the feedback and tips! With this, I'm sure we will definitely get better. Keep in mind, this is Both of our FIRST time ever running a course like this, with no training or anything. From a beginner's perspective (which we are at racing) it is obvious that the 4WD is much easier for both of us. The reason we are comparing these two vehicles is Price, and price alone. They are very similarly price. The Traxxas however is actually $30 more and doesn't have a brushless motor or 4WD while the ZD Racing does have both. The ZD Racing is also RTR at that price, with a charger and battery! Doesn't mean we don't like our Traxxas Slash, but showing that there is better bang for your buck out there. We plan on getting better at racing both styles ;-) Again, thank you for your awesome tips!

You'd have the backup Parts immediately. And then whatever you break then you order it. If you break the same part again right away. There's an issue with your driving.
