One thing to also consider is that a certain "roughness" is expected in this style of music coming from the blues tradition.

Thanks for featuring the Marshall Tucker Band. It was the first time I remember hearing the flute showcased as a lead instrument. Jethro Tull was the second. I agree with the other commenters in that a live recording doesn’t do Marshall Tucker’s music justice.
I have also enjoyed your observations of Jethro Tull’s music and it has helped me to better appreciate Ian’s expertise as a flutist.

Me too. Flute is like viola, violin, and other fretless instruments, the sound can "slide around" a bit from pure tone. That can be good or bad depending on what the player is trying for. Most performances are imperfect, it's live ... and rockish

I suggested this band in your Jethro Tull one. I used to be a guitar tech for the Marshall Tucker Band, not only is he a great player, he is a great person!! He rips a sax too!! Thanks, for the interest. Only three left from original band now!
Jerry Eubanks is a great person too!!

  • @OldSchoolhouseProd
    @OldSchoolhouseProd Před 3 lety

Although I've been known to play lead guitar with the Marshall Tucker Band occasionally myself, I've never played the flute with them -- even though I could, since I learned the flute parts to so many of their songs over the years when I was working on how to use a flute and other woodwinds in a band like this one. I'd guess that the flute player, Jerry Eubanks, uses his middle finger for the F# because he was primarily a sax player, and that's how it's done. As far as electrifying his flute, Eubanks was most likely using a Barcus-Berry 6100 Flute pickup; it was an industry standard for a long time in there. Keep 'em coming!

When they called Jerry Eubanks and asked him if he knew how to play the flute, he lied, and said yes. They knew he played the sax, so Jerry said he practiced three days straight on the flute because he wanted to be in the band.

Playing F# with the middle finger rather than the ring finger and pinky is how it is done on saxophone and the upper register of the clarinet. Most rock woodwind players start out on sax and migrate to the others, so will play using fingeringgs that they are familiar with.

I'm not sure from when this Marshall Tucker video was made, but it looks to be from some time ago. Thanks, Heline! Love your take. Love MTB too, and hope you react to two of the best 3 "flute tunes" - "Take the Highway" and "Can't You See?" ("Can't You See?" is one of my favorite all-time tears-in-my-beer songs, and I seem to be collecting reactions!) No, flutist was not singing, that's Doug Gray on lead mouth on this one. (Toy Caldwell was the other, on CYS.) Take those two tunes from the Tanglewood shows, this was not one of their best performances (and I saw them a whole bunch).

Thanks for checking out Marshall Tucker! This isn't the best version of the band, but for checking out the flute, it will do.

Long ago I thought reaction videos were pointless, because I could just watch the song ... but you kids give me a fresh set of eyes as well as like jamal or whomever, keep the art alive. Thanks for a different point of view. Parallax.

I wish you would rate the studio version. It's much more sharper.

Yes, his mic is in the flute, he has played for millions of hippies, they didn't mind. He has better stuff! Yes, I was guitar tech for them, he was the least trouble of all. He took care of everything, once I gave him a cord. I remember adding on his wireless, new technology then!

Heline, I’m sorry you listened to a live version of that song. The original studio version would’ve been more enjoyable. I don’t even play the flute, but I could tell this version wasn’t the best.

Who are you to criticise this guy. Have you ever sold as many records as this band has.
This band was out before you were born making millions of dollars.
People bought their records and have paid to see these guys and they don't care which finger he uses

Thank you for trying something new as I am new to your world also. A nice way to unwind after a brutal day, first I got to see the sunset, then your reactions. It's all good!
