She was really pissed and she grounded me for telling her the reasons that we should be able to. She said: "You and your sister are minors and I am the leader of this house and you do everything I say." She then started reading into a private conversation that I was having with my best friend two days later. My friend told me to keep her secret and not to let anyone know before she is ready to tell people about it herself. I don't have a phone, so I text her with my mom's phone. My mom needed her phone for something and I forgot to swipe the texts off, so I asked her to not read what we were saying. She started yelling at me. I tried to explain to her that I'm keeping a secret for my friend, but she wouldn't stop. I told my little sister about it, who is the only one who listens to me at home, and our talk went on for about an hour. We could hear my mom and my older sister talking about me and my mom was super pissed, saying I was disrespectful. What is wrong with trying to keep a secret for my friend?! It upsets me. It doesn't make me feel like a person. It makes me feel like property.
As someone who is recently an adult- that is a completely valid thing to feel and when parents treat their kids like property and not full fleshed people with their own relationships and lives, it makes me sick. I hate controlling parents so much, and I've known multiple people who were abused in that way, which might not be the case here, but I have seen it before and it sucks. Parents shouldn't check their kids phone (except if they are young, it's for protecting them) . It's mean that they do not trust them, wich can make the kid with less trust in their parents and dlislike them more because they can't have privacy.

Edit: I had an argument the other day with my mom about mine and my little sister's privacy and that we should be allowed to have secrets. She was really pissed and she grounded me for telling her the reasons that we should be able to. She said: "You and your sister are minors and I am the leader of this house and you do everything I say." She then started reading into a private conversation that I was having with my best friend two days later. My friend told me to keep her secret and not to let anyone know before she is ready to tell people about it herself. I don't have a phone, so I text her with my mom's phone. My mom needed her phone for something and I forgot to swipe the texts off, so I asked her to not read what we were saying. She started yelling at me. I tried to explain to her that I'm keeping a secret for my friend, but she wouldn't stop. I told my little sister about it, who is the only one who listens to me at home, and our talk went on for about an hour. We could hear my mom and my older sister talking about me and my mom was super pissed, saying I was disrespectful. What is wrong with trying to keep a secret for my friend?! It upsets me. It doesn't make me feel like a person. It makes me feel like property.
As someone who is recently an adult- that is a completely valid thing to feel and when parents treat their kids like property and not full fleshed people with their own relationships and lives, it makes me sick. I hate controlling parents so much, and I've known multiple people who were abused in that way, which might not be the case here, but I have seen it before and it sucks. Seriously, best of luck to both you and your sister. I promise it gets better.

Parents shouldn't check their kids phone (except if they are young, it's for protecting them) . It's mean that they do not trust them, wich can make the kid with less trust in their parents and dlislike them more because they can't have privacy.
Honestly, when my mom is texting someone and I peek to see who's she's texting, she quickly gets out of the convo and exits the app (Like she's slick with it), and whenever I do that, she gets angry af and demamds to know who I'm speaking to and stuff,she doesn't wait for me to even respond, she just takes my phone and searches all my messaging apps (WhatsApp, Discord, instagram, etc..), so thats why i always delete discord after I finish talking to friends, and we're not even talking abt anything wrong, it's just that my mom isn't the best at English and she tends to not understand the abbreviations we use for certain phrases so she gets angry for no reason at all, anyone else relate?

For the vast majority of people this does just feel like an invasion if privacy, not trusting your kid, and leads kids to hide MORE stuff and feel hurt and ultimately distrust their parent and be afraid of them finding out of basically anything going on in their life.
