  • Taft Point is a great short hike in Yosemite National Park that is accessed off Glacier Point Road (only open in the summer). This hike is 2 miles round trip and it takes you to one of the best viewpoints in Yosemite.

Josh, that's lichen. A good thing. Did you know that when they restore old manor houses and castles in Great Britain they have certified lichen experts come in and evaluate the more than 50 types that cover the stone walls. Why? Because over time lichen form a protective barrier and help preserve the structures. You and your Mom must have no fear of heights. That railing looks sketchy.

Highly recommend doing this one at sunrise. It's a huge attraction for sunset, but we went at first light and it was absolutely magical - we had the whole place to ourselves, with morning sun lighting the glittering canyon below.

Moss on trees is a sign of excessive moisture and low light levels. It is also an indication that the air is not polluted. Which is good. Moss is generally not a problem on branches and, along with lichens, can actually give a tree character and charm. And by the way, glad to see you taking your mother on the hikes, too. Hi MOM!!!!! :-D

Great video. I did Taft Point a couple years ago, and you are right. Those Fissures just seem to pop out of nowhere, so paying attention to the trail in front of you is really important in this area. Its funny how people think there not afraid of heights until the last ten feet from the edge, and then its tippy toeing closer to the edge or getting down on all fours. When there is no railing, everything you feel about heights changes. Great video josh.

We did Taft Point and Sentinel Dome on the same hike, just the right length for me. I always thought it was funny that one little section on the point had railing and everywhere else did not. Also, there are trail markers high up in the trees for cross country skiing which blew my mind as I wouldn't want to be anywhere near those cliffs on skis or with many feet of snow covering them.

  • @wlouisharris

great view. We went in 2020. They were limiting the # of people in the park and it was still pretty crowded. I'm glad I got a chance to go during limited capacity. We drove in from the south side and you could see the massive damage from previous forest fires. It was an extremely dry time and the vegetation was in bad need of rainfall. I laid down on my stomach at one of the sheer drop-offs. It's insane how high these cliffs are.

Yes that green moss looking growth on the trees is lichen. They are a good sign. They are pretty much an innocuous parasite that grows on the trees in the Sierra’s. It’s intensely green there. They can only grow when the air is clean. The water levels in the park are so low this year. I went in February and there was no snow hardly and Yosemite falls was a mere trickle. It wasn’t cold at all. This is a strange year for the falls. No wonder nor cal is burning up. Good to see you Ruth your mom on a hike. Nice treat. Thanks for posting. Not fine that hike in years. It’s a jaw dropping easy hike

4:49 is Cathedral Rocks (Upper, Middle and Lower Rocks). The Three Brothers are the 3 peak east of the gully East of El Capitan on the north side of the valley just before the valley bends north to Yosemite Falls. In other words directly across Taft Point. 5:10 in the middle of the screen.
