Jack Kirby did a lot more than the artwork. He wrote many of the stories, branching into areas like the multiverse, time travel, parallel worlds, etc. his problem was that he couldn’t write engaging dialogue (the Eternals are a good example), and Stan Lee could.
Agreed. Remove either Stan or Jack from that era and Marvel as we know it would never have existed. Marvel was built on both of their shoulders, not just Stan's.
Wait, aren't there a variety of allegations against Stan Lee's writing capabilities? It's even been alleged that most of the dialogue that gets credited to him was actually from Jack Kirby among other artists. Also, using The Eternals is a poor choice. The only reason he made that series is purely because he was hired to, and the only reason he was hired to make that series is because Marvel wanted a competitor to New Gods, which he also created.
@@SirBlackReeds No, Stan Lee's writing capabilities are not disputed. It's easy for outsiders to get confused about creators' contributions, so I don't begrudge them, but it's important to set the record straight. Long story short: Stan Lee used to do LOTS of comics at once for Marvel, with several artists. There wasn't time for him to write full scripts for every comic up front, and thus, the so-called "Marvel method" of making comics came into existence: Stan gave the artist the general idea of what he wanted the comic to be about, and then the artist would go and draw the entire comic how the artist wanted. Then Stan would come back and write dialogue for the finished art. It was a fantastically collaborative process, where artists got to be visual storytellers and Stan still got to tell the story he wanted to tell.
Stan wasn't a perfect human being, and there are plenty of times even now where artists like Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko deserve more mainstream credit than they deserve. But by and large, people who worked with Stan loved him, and if you look at the old comics, Stan was *constantly* hyping up the Marvel bullpen to readers, giving the artists epic nicknames and whatnot. He was not trying to hide creators' contributions.
Don't forget what he did in dc comics, the new gods and apocalypse, and darkseid
One thing that also sank Jack, in terms of getting proper credit, was that he was not at all interested in making a "brand" or "image" for himself like Stan was. Jack just wanted to create (he did want due credit, too, of course).
There's a video, if you Google "Stan Lee intro from 1960s," where does not have his classic glasses, mustache, or use his classic catch phrases like "true believers," "''nuff said," or "excelsior," etc. and he's nearly unrecognizable other than the sound of his voice. It's also almost all business-speak about the state of the company and its sales. He is nowhere near resembling the absolute character we would all know him to be (at the time of that recording). Stan was able to build a whole persona and carve out a mythos for himself, very successfully. He worked hard at it, and it paid off, as few others had the foresight or interest needed to do the same thing. It did mean that others got left behind in terms of collective recognition.
Growing up, Iron Man wasn't a relevant characters to most people unless you really liked comic books, and even then it was if you liked Marvel. Most people I knew liked DC better than Marvel. I think part of that was the Batman movies in the 80s and 2000s... Then the Iron Man movie came out and everything changed.

Some good movies, a lot of shit ones pre-Iron Man, the Ultimates universe, a lot of controversial event comics and a bunch of great animated series. Good times.
While Marvel is doing great with movies and television, comic sales are at an all time low. Comics themselves are a less and less popular form of media. There are many contributing factors to this, and I think it'd be good for this channel to showcase to fall of comic books at the same time as the rise of comic book movies.

The last few marvel movies havent been any good
Civil War is still my favourite MCU movie. Endgame, Infinity War and No Way Home have greater spectacle and nostalgia factor but I liked the moral dilemma Cap and Iron Man faced with both sides not being entirely right or wrong about their stances on the Sokovia Accords. Spidey's first MCU appearance in there was just the cherry on top.
on a similar note, my favorite mcu movie (besides no way home because i love spider-man) would be the winter soldier. that movie was the perfect mcu movie to me.

No way home really wasn’t that good imo, my top marvel films are Thor Ragnarok, Doctor Strange, and Shang Chi, but ofc all the avengers films are fire as well🔥.

Also to add to your point; the events of Civil War have serious consequences in Infinity War that lead to the Avengers' downfall.
As a DC comic book fan it’s amazing to see how Marvel has built such a large ongoing franchise that consistently gets overall good reviews.
But DC is still doing great too

I also love the fact that Disney purposefully separated marvel studios from marvel entertainment so that Kevin Feigie didn't have any interference from marvel itself on how he made his films, while still being able to use the characters.
Yeah but it also gave a big FU to the Marvel Entertainment properties that were supposedly MCU but only barely (Agents Of Shield, the Netflix Shows, Cloak and Dagger) and that did have fans that wanted to see them have a bigger role in the cinematic universe. That’s why everyone is excited to possibly see Daredevil in No Way Home
@@SpikeShooter92 Marvel Studios had nothing to do with any of the tv shows. This is part of the reason for the split. Marvel TV, at the time, was controlled by Marvel Ent and they forced in cannon that kevin feige was not happy with. Marvel TV shot themselves in the foot, and since 2019 folded into Marvel Studios.
Which is ironic because Feige was heavily involved with the more contested, controversial, etc. movies.

The MCU is easily an icon of the 2010s, it literally took over the enter decade and I think would be associated with 2010s nostalgia for years to come
It says a LOT about the quality of your content that I am a lifelong comics fan who has heard every ounce of this story at least 80 billion times from reference books, documentaries, video essays and the like from other comic historians and creators and yet I wasn't bored or glazed over for a second watching you go through it all again.
Anytime I can hear how Marvel and Direct Comics (DC) evolved and survived during their struggles, it never gets old. Too bad that the comic books are not selling as well or near profitable to the extent that the movies are. As for the toys related to them it seems that they too are profitable.
If you’re old enough to remember the first live action Punisher, Captain America and Fantastic Four movie then you know how far Marvel has come on the silver screen lol 👴🏽

Marvel Studios has unlocked an infinite amount of movies and shows. They have decades of materials and tons of characters. They’ve introduced a whole generation to iconic characters.
Those characters were never iconic until the MCU marvel was always looked at as a bootleg version of DC they bearly made anything original most of their characters and stories were just their version of DC characters

@@ashbasu I completely agree. I'm much more of a marvel fan than a DC one simply because their universe is so much bigger and yet still manages to stay coherent. There are so many different sides to the MCU.
The street side with Spiderman, Daredevil, Hawkeye, Kingpin, Luke cage, Punisher, Moon Knight.
The Political side with Captain America, Shang Chi, Black Panther, Avengers, Young Avengers, Hydra, Ten Rings, Thunderbolts, She Hulk.
The Cosmic side with the Guardians of the Galaxy, Thor, Captain Marvel, Skrulls, Sword, Eternals, Celestials, Elders, Galactus, Nova.
The Mystical side with Doctor strange, Scarlet witch, Blade, Moon Knight (Again), Mordo, Agatha, America Chavez, Ghost Rider.
The Multiversal side with Loki, Sylvie, TVA, Kang, Fantastic 4, Mephisto.
Then there's the mutant side that they haven't even started yet.
I've dragged on quite a bit but my point is Marvel is able to have all these facets that appeal to different people. While previously it was possible to not like the MCU, as they expand in all of these different directions it's gonna get harder for people to say that because there will be SOMETHING that you like. Dc just didn't have the foresight to do this. It's also clear that with this diversification they won't need ONE overarching threat like Thanos because different parts of the universe won't meet up in the way they used to. You might have the street side facing Kingpin as a big bad while the multiversal side faces Kang. Similarly the Cosmic side might face Galactus while the political side may face Ross and his Thunderbollts. It's all been done both incredibly subltly and incredibly intelligently.
@@himum3429 first DC came up with all of these concepts like using magic,Multiverse etc in comics marvel just ripped them off plus DCEU is still expanding and even though marvel had all these sides they all feel the same a shitty story with a bunch of characters cracking jokes only daredevil felt different on the other hand In DC they have only introduced the justice league and every character feels different Aquaman had his own different world and story same with superman and Wonder Woman and flash would do the same because they have originality and quality marvel is just same shit every movie

Wasn't it always? On the contrary for me, when the game came out I thought Marvel was that giant Goliath in the crossover going against Capcom's humble David. Regardless of Marvel's financial struggles in the 90's they still had such a massive presence throughout all forms of media and merchandise that Capcom simply couldn't hope to approach. Spider-Man and X-Men had excellent TAS shows on TV at the time, as well as the less popular but still enjoyable Fantastic 4 and Iron Man. I didn't read comics but I easily knew most of the Marvel characters and acknowledged the long history of the brand that goes way, way back. Capcom was a solid game maker but it was still somewhat new and I had absolutely no idea who Captain Commando was, or Jin Saotome, or Stryder, or Morrigan, even though I was an avid gamer. These characters were mostly from arcades rather than home console games and there were barely any arcades in my city. So yeah, Marvel was always king.
Spiderman, X-Men, Fantastic Four and Hulk were everything but niche though, way before the movies everyone knew who they were.

Still, that's part of the reason I wasn't a fan of Infinite. Everyone on the Marvel side was part of the MCU, or just ported over from UMVC3 like Ghost Rider. Venom was the only one I think, but he was already the 2D era games.
@@Diwasho Every kid watched the TAS shows and Capcom's games were based off those. To me, Marvel was the bigger side because TV was the more mainstream media vs the wild success of Street Fighter in arcades.
Marvel was at the verge of bankruptcy when they asked Capcom to make "Street Fighter 2, but with X-Men" and got Children of the Atom. Marvel would rubber stamp every decision Capcom made (Shuma-Gorath as a playable character in Marvel Super Heroes, for starters) just to make sure the money kept flowing.
MvC:Infinite dropped the ball so hard by kicking out the X-Men. Marvel tried to shoehorn the MCU into an older franchise and it backfried.

Blade didn’t save marvel. As Marvel only got a tiny cut of the box office. It was the first series comic movie tho. That made way for x-men and SpiderMan. That give way to the mcu. So it’s more that it started off a snowball.
I love Blade and Blade 2. Marvel didn't get a lot of money from it, but it did save Blade as a character, as his comics never did well. The movie revived his comic for a few more years though.
The MCU is a spectacle for sure. The castings for Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr, Captain America (Chris Evans), Black Widow (Scarlet Johansson), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), and Hulk (Mark Ruffalo). The casting was perfect and the movies are amazing. I have to say tho that pre MCU movies were great too especially Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy. I know Fantastic 4 and X-men were out around that time too, but those Spider-Man films are what started and projected superhero movies into the juggernaut they are today and made them smash box office hit’s. The heart, soul, and passion that went into them are insane and the Raimi trilogy is my favorite of all time!
And he completely glossed over the Sony and Fox era of Marvel.. like, there should've been an entire video on the back and forth about Marvel selling IP to those companies and fighting to get them back from the other studios. Morbius is gonna tank and taint the Marvel brand esp after Phase 4 died and we were sold 2 dozen super hero movies a year. Market is oversaturated and Sony still had the rights to make trashy Venom movies, but most people don't understand the difference between Micky Mouse/MCU and what Sony makes these days. FFS they put Spiderman in the post credit scene of Venom 2. Fiege doesn't even care anymore.

As a comic book collector I can tell you this was a great video! One thing that bothered me a bit however was the praise you gave to Stan Lee for the creation of these iconic characters with Jack Kirby mentioned as an afterthought. Stan Lee was a notorious credit hog with those characters. Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko deserve more credit than they get.
I agree. Stan Lee gets too much credit when some of the best comics he didn’t even write.

A few rises and falls that you missed were the from the early 90s-early 2000s. In the early 90s Marvel was killing it thanks to having some of the best artist, but they left to form Image Comics. This got worse when the quality of the books were terrible. When Toy Biz bought Marvel and subsequently Bill Jemas became president did Marvel begin to rise. He wasn’t that great, but he focused on selling collected editions, selling comics by how much were ordered instead of guessing, and creating the Marvel Knights, Max, and Ultimate Marvel Imprints.
Yes, the apocryphal story is that negotiations got so heated that Marvel rep blurted "Someone has to pick the cotton" to the faces of the artists and they decided to walk away and create Image Comics instead.
Never got into comics, but I did enjoy the MCU movies and the 90s cartoons for X-MEN and Spider Man.
Since trading cards came up, I was reminded of Magic the Gathering and how it started as comics stores were getting into selling trading cards, or something like that.
Then you're missing out on what makes spiderman, ironman, hulk looks great. Comics have more complex and interesting stories compared to MCU which took some bad and rushed directions. Comics tell more in depth things about these characters.
@@sigmaofOz Of course, but as a kid, I had no one to get me interested in comics, so I grew up without them; as an adult, I got into manga instead, after realizing one anime I liked had a less-filler source manga and looking for more by the creators. I stopped with manga after two series left me looking at my wallet wondering what happened.

Comics aren't that different with mangas, in fact most of the most popular mangas are for immature people, comics and mangas aren't that different besides the fact DC and marvel canon are expanding one universe to another, and have more mature themes instead of focusing fun and action. Have you even tried reading a comic? Needing someone else to get interested proves lack of confidence and analyzation.
Please try reading the comics. Just read what you looks good to you. Don't worry about continuity or anything like that. If you like something you'll naturally want to find out more about it. If your local library has it, you can sign up for hoopla which is free and has comics you can read for free. They have everything.
Their movie rights is such an interesting story in it self. But, They have branched out to all types of multimedia not just movies, however, the majority is movies and TV now.
Hell, the movies and TV shows are the only things raking in the dough.

What even was his contribution? There are so many varying allegations of what he actually did while employed at Marvel that the truth is buried in a place that's impossible to reach.

When Disney bought it 2009 they gave lee a lifetime yearly salary of 1 million probably cause they felt sorry for him cause Disney was making the big bucks from his original idea.

To show you how little money I had as a kid, back in the 1960s I had to quit collecting comic books when they went from 12 cents to 15 cents .Doesn’t sound like much but that’s a 25% increase. Now I go to places like Barnes & Noble and occasionally I will see comic books there and they cost almost 5 dollars.

I still remember being in pawn shops looking for guitars and guys would come in to sell their recently purchased collectors comics. They were offered a small percentage of face value but were actually expecting hundreds (or thousands) of dollars each.

What I really liked about Marvel was how they brought back their old heroes to the SIlver Age, explained their absence in a satisfying way and created a shared and consistent universe for a massive roster of characters. I may be wrong but I'm sure this had never been done commercially on such a scale.

They did that, too. That said, some movies like The Big Sleep, Psycho, Rope, and Anatomy of a Murder managed to fit serious, adult themes into those very strict codes. The old movies that managed to pull it off deserve more respect, but the obstructive rules they had to work under should be remembered.

This video barely scratches the surface of the pissing war between investors and robbers barons that went on in the 90s for control over Marvel. SFDebris did a great multi-part documentary covering it!

Pokémon is literally the highest grossing media franchise it hasn't had a fall. The Trading Card Game is literally one of the best selling card games alongside Yugioh and Magic The Gathering. Also he already did a video on Pokémon titled Pokémon Bigger Than You Know.
And now Marvel has fallen again. This time from a single Tweet from yesterday on Stan Lee's Twitter account announcing there will soon be Marvel NFTs released.

Being involved with Disney has a chance of being put into a dumpster fire and them quietly removing the competition. Look at what they tried to do with Power Rangers. They tried to set them back so many times but dedicated fans new and old kept coming back for more.
Being a huge comic nerd, I'm so happy to see this. Many people don't know Timely < Atlas < eventually Marvel!
One of my favorite shows to come out of Marvel’s licensing phase was the TV series The Spectacular Spider-Man. It was created by Greg Weisman and Victor Cook for Sony when Sony had license to do make Spider-Man for TV and Movies. I love any show that Weisman creates or writes for so much so that I now blindly anticipate anything he’s involved with.
Unfortunately Sony traded the TV rights for Spider-Man back to Marvel to get more movie concessions. This left the show and show elements owned by Sony but the characters owned by Marvel.
Neither can make more episodes without permission of the other. There is little chance of that happening. One side would need to license or purchase from the other. Then Disney bought Marvel. Now there’s even less of a chance (unless one buys the other company).
All 3 companies really like the show, yet here we are. Still, I hope and I’ve even signed a petition to show my support, but I understand the chances.
I mean they collaborated on the Home trilogy. I think anything is possible lol

Especially Dr. Strange. While Derrickson's movie is more technically sound, the 1978 film is much more imaginative.

The Human Torch from that first comic was a different one than the Fantastic Four Human Torch. The original Human Torch was a robot that was modeled after a third human Human Torch

When i was in Comic book distribution back in 91", I knew that the Industry regularly burned warehouses full of comic books to inflate the rarity.
My step-father, trying to teach me about stocks, and knowing I liked comics, bought me a few shares of Marvel…in 1993. I learned about stocks alright.

Still have my copy of the 1994 annual report, (#4) in the form of a glossy 64-page comic where the characters explain the company strategy and all the data is at the end. Kind of awesome. Will happily share pics!

I'm getting rather burned out on content overload from the MCU, but I cannot deny that I still watch Captain America: The Winter Soldier on a semi-regular basis. Easily my favorite movie in the MCU, and kept me following them until Endgame.
Me and my best friend also have CA: The Winter Soldier on high regard, as being the most "down to earth" of the movies. Less clichés, less stupid jokes than on other ones, a more serious tone, a good and unexpected story. Greetings from Ecuador!

In 2007 my father gave me a big box full of comics that he got from his boss and to old me to sell them. It was a box full of X-Men #1 (only 2 covers). They were worth $0.50 each...
I love they took characters like Iron Man and Captain America, which most people weren't aware of outside of comics fans, and made them some of the most beloved superheroes.
Iron Man? Yeah.
Captain America? Debatable. They had several projects revolving around Captain America, shows, movies and even merchandise (the torso shield logo was actually created years before MCU Captain America even came out). So people were aware of Captain America outside the comic books, they just didn't care that much when Marvel barely invested in the character's mainstream projects back then.
Stan Lee saved the company. And then they payed him back by using his Twitter to advertise new NFTs years after he died. Seriously.
You should do a video comparing Marvel to DC.
The first movie I ever owned was the original Spiderman movie when I was in 1st grade. I loved it so much, that I watched it almost every day. Since then, Marvel characters have been a significant part of my life. Marvel movies empowered me when I was going through some really tough times.
If you want more detail, I highly recommend “Marvel The Untold Story” by Sean Howe.
I was a comic book dealer back during the early 1990s (deep into bubble bursting period) and to simplify, a lot of us naively believed that the speculation wave was going to last for a long time. God that was so dumb. Anyway, Jack Kirby was more than just an artist. Along with Stan Lee, he was a major architect in building the Marvel Universe. Don't downplay "The King" that way. Other than that, good overview.

Once the manufacturer of the item is in on the "collectability" and starts trying to make that a selling point, it's a good sign that it's over. Rare comic covers, "chase cars/figures", limited editions that aren't really limited, foil cards, limited edition releases of movies, etc.

Disney finally getting the last bit of characters that they didn't own besides the complete filming rights to Spiderman like Daredevil, Runaways, X-Men, Fantastic Four, Namor, etc and finally bringing them into the MCU like Kingpin in Hawkeye and Matt Murdock in No Way Home or announcing stuff like the Fantastic Four movie just gets me excited about the future of the MCU

I think it was the 90's that I was more familiar with Marvel than any other time in my life. My friends and I collected the 1st and 2nd series of trading cards they put out, X-Men and Spiderman had their own cartoon, and further down the line Capcom started doing video games with the Marvel license. I'm definitely out of the loop when it comes to Marvel nowadays but as far as the movies are concerned I really enjoyed the first Ironman movie.

Definitely. Comic Book sales have been dropping for a good number of years now. Plus with the MCU being 10 years old at this stage it will be interesting to see if they can keep that momentum. Superhero Movie fatigue is bound to set in at some point [for me was with Civil War]

The True Infinity War is good vs evil, or more accurately - love vs. selfishness.
My favorite movie is "Captain America: Winter Soldier" because it shows the nature of evil as being filled with hate and deception to warp people's minds any way it can. The nature of God was not to create good and evil. Evil was born in rebellion against God. I think the Einstein Parable of evil being the same as darkness and cold which don't really exist in themselves but are absences of light and heat. Evil is the absence of God in a person's soul. He gave us free will and we are free to choose to love others or just ourselves. The consequences of this choice is why there is so much evil in the world.

The early MCU proves that it's not about how recognizable your IP is, but how good your story is... a shame that their parent company doesn't seem to remember that
Eh, Phase 1 had only two truly good stories: Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk. Thor was based off of a storyline that was much better-suited for television than a feature film, and Captain America is an entertaining mess of a movie that tries to be three things at once, but doesn't quite manage to stick the landing, and Hugo Weaving ended up getting the shaft as a result. Avengers itself haphazardly adapts a massive storyline. The reason that made so much money is simply because it was the first crossover movie of its kind.
Not a big fan of super hero films...but a big fan of La Croix...Please do a video on this giant and influential company that never advertises....
Speaking of Stan Lee, I still hold that his best cameo was in Fantastic Four Rise of the Silver Surfer when he was turned away from Reed and Susan's wedding because he wasn't on the guest list despite protesting "I'm Stan Lee, of course I'm on the list."

Don't get me wrong I've watched my fair share of marvel films and some dc ones but I think it's gonna fade away eventually. Sure it's been success for years but it's only a matter of time until another fall

Major nostalgia when you talked about Marvel aquiring Fleer trading cards, cuz that's when I really got into Marvel heroes when I saw the trading cards! I would love to compare powers between the characters and wonder how they would stack up against each other if they fought. 15-20 years later I'm seeing it live action on a movie screen! Amazing!

Blade opened the door. It took a while for other movie companies to see the worth in it all. Once X-Men & Spider-Man came out it became more apparent and just... started rolling and snowbaling faster & faster until now.

Isn't it interesting how governments qnd some parents never learn from history because they need something to blame, first its comic books, then movies, TV, rap and rock and roll that is corrupting children and turning them into criminals and yet despite that clearly not happening they now blame video games as the newest form of entertainment
Yeah basically parents doesnt want us to feel happy and enjoy our "my time" because they only know about study study and study only.
I remember buying my comics in the 1980's from my local shop. Yep, didn't read them - collected them. I was a Star Wars comic collector but sidelined with a Marvel issue now and then. I was clued in on buying "Thor" issue #337 because of the cover artist, Walt Simonson. I was upset at having to pay .60-cents for it. Today, it sells for a LOT! I still have my 7 copies. ;-)

It's amazing that no matter how many times it happens, some people never catch on that gathering in the street and burning media is not a good look.
They invested into Trading Cards right around the time Trading Card Games were about to flourish thanks to Magic The Gathering. I do wonder had they not made such awful decisions instead waited to make a Trading Card Game with Wizards of The Coast, how would've it turned out differently for them in that venture.
