@the Game, Review and Reallife Channel Compare this 1980's Mazda 626 with the 1977-1985 European Ford Granada. (This second generation Mazda Capella (1978-1982) looks a bit like the second generation European Ford Granada.)
very impressive performance for an early 80's compact car powered by a 4 cylinder engine! The first generation 626 was one car I've never seen much of even when they were new.
In late 1981, I purchased the 1982 Mazda 626 four sedan. The color was Maya gold. The minor esthetic changes to the car reached its pinnacle that year before a redesign in '83. Loved it's sedate appearance. Yeah, I researched the American cars but the 626 was suited for my tastes and budget.
I like how the rear windows rolled down in coupe form. That's not something you see in modern cars. Well, Mercedes coupes do, but it'd be cool to see other modern vehicles do that.
Have to have safety windows in place... you know because a kid might climb out the coupe window in that 8 inch crack before you notice. Just more of kids ruining everything.
Rod Munch huh? Mercedes still uses the design. It was a trend they stopped because of interior noise, thicker glass would be costly which is why it's only Mercedes that still does it. I don't think kids are the issue, seeing as sedans and SUVs still have rear windows that roll down.
I had the 1981 coupe 5 Spd Luxury edition, mine was blue like shown and had a cassette player in addition to the AM/FM stereo (as shown in the brown coupe). Handled great back in the day with Pirelli P77's tires. Loved that car, bulletproof. Used $3500 in 1987.
I bought 1981 4-door sedan in 1991 with 65k miles for $700 and it lasted for almost 5 more years… The engine outlasted the body, when finally scrapped the engine was still running strong just the body was rusted to the point where it was unsafe to drive… Best car I ever owned 😎👍
Loved these so much, haven't seen one in decades. Seen many rotory swapped. That trunk lid fake fall was bogus, (40yrs later) we see your arm shadow pulling it down sir. LOL
I'd like to own one just because it's RWD and scarce. I don't recall ever seeing that particular year model 626 in person. My first car was a 89 Mazda 323. Ah, what a fun little reliable hatchback that was. I put that car through hell but also maintained it so she never complained or gave me any problems whatsoever.
My parents owned a 1982 626 sedan which they bought new. I drove it while in high school and afterward. I can recall it being almost frighteningly underpowered when overtaking on the highway (the tach would redline, but the speedo would barely move). It had electrical issues (the power door locks used to go up and down over and over like the car was possessed). All the "chrome" fell off the trim. The clear coat flaked off the wheels, which started to look really shabby. The sunroof leaked. And then the rust started and spread with astonishing speed. The car was barely 10 years old when it was towed to the junkyard.
My first car was an 1981 Mazda 626 4 door automatic. The car was solid and bullet proof. I never changed the oil in the thing (I was 17 years old and didnt know about oil changes lol) all I did was put oil in it when the oil light came on. I put over 100,000km on it (i got it with about 140,000km) before I practically totaled it. I lost control hitting black ice doing about 80km per hour and rolled it over into a ditch, landing back on 4 wheels. The roof was caved in, all the windows busted out of it except the front and back and it started up no problem. Me and my buddies pushed it out of the ditch and I drove it home. That car was a tank.
I have a 1982 Corvette and while headroom isn't much of an issue since it's an American car, the bigger issue is how small the interior - like trying to do anything inside the car, it's not made to fit a modern American. The seating position is fine and it's comfortable, but if you need to do anything to the center console, wow, it feels like it was made by a team of midgets, it's a very very tight fit.
Great video. I remember watching one of the Motorweek Anniversary Specials and I recall you guys at Motorweek giving high praise to the first front wheel drive Mazda 626(1983-1987). Could you guys please upload that video if you have it?
These are the type of reviews that I like. He shall remain unnamed, but I don’t need a reviewer telling me at great length all about the styling that I can clearly see for myself.
I had one of these from new, great car. Never had a problem with the boot (trunk) lid coming down but then again I didn’t have a luggage rack mounted on mine.
A suspension up grade made a big difference in this car . Beter cornering ,less roll and improved feedback. No more bounce either. A good car with a truck engine holding it back. Would have been fun to put some boost into the intake and a bit more carburetor. Unfortunately it was stolen off my parking lot and didn't have a chance to do that. The car was fun to drive on the rolling back roads in Wisconsin with the improved suspension didn't need to slow down much kinda negating the lack of power as it had good torque and a nice throttle response . Getting it well past the speed limit was easy and pretty safe. I think beter brake psds helped the brakes because I really didn't notice that to be a problem either. An updated version of this would really make a nice daily driver. A 2+2 with fold down seats good room up front and a big boot with modern power and handling a plus size Miata ... still waiting four decades later.
We had the 87 626 LX Touring Sedan. The AC vent louvers rotated left and right. Luckily it was a 5 speed since it was a little bit under powered. Handled great. Loved the styling. Loved the style of the standard alloy wheels, too. Unique. Any Reviews of the 2nd generation?
Had an 89 626 the last ones made in Japan. It was front wheel drive and a lot bigger the second generation of the front drive replacement. It had a fuel injected 2.2 12 valve good torque and good space and drove nice but not anything like the rear drive they made until 1982.
My former vice-principal turned godfather used to drive a Mazda 626 similar to this one back in high school. It was his first car and he sort of loved it. We talked about it while I had lunch with him and his ten-year old twin daughters on April 6, 2018.
I haven't seen one of these things in 20 years. A friend in HS had a sedan- never had any issues with it. IIRC, a lot of parts were shared with the 1st gen RX7. Maybe even the brakes, which is why the heavier 626 had some issues.
Wow is that car bouncing, reminds me of why I hated driving on the interstate on those old small cars - unless it was my Fiero which had the engine right behind my head and a giant wing and ground effects and was lowered, all of which meant it stuck to the road like a vacuum cleaner. My 1982 Corvette, obviously a much more expensive car than this one with a V8 up front, it's also is a great highway car, helped by the fact it's 3500lbs or so. But wow, get into that 2600lb or less category and those things look like they're about to bounce off the road once you get them up to 70 - and having driven a bunch of these types of cars growing up I can confirm that they always felt on sneeze away from driving into a bridge embankment.
@@Andyface79 well dummy, since I owned a Fiero GT and I've owned two Corvettes, along with BMW's and Caddy's and a GTO and a Mustang and a Camaro, etc - I'll stick to my opinion on cars over you and your 2003 Camry you're still driving.

Of course you never had one and you're just repeating what some other moron told you who also never had one.
@@rodmunch69 I’m talking reliability which is public record. If it worked why did they kill it after 5 years? Why is it a threat to you that I point this out? You can still have enjoyed owning one while recognizing its overall failure.
Had the same one in blue when I was stationed in Hawaii. Took forever to get up them mountain roads. 2nd gear almost the entire way up. I thought that engine was going to blow up. I paid $850 for mine. Once my 1989 Mercury Grand Marquis was shipped over, I sold the Mazda to another Marine for $1,200.

When I was in college I had a light blue 626 coupe with every option. One day I was going to visit a girl in Warwick NY and was right around the corner from her house when it overheated out of nowhere. The engine blew but I was able to coast into her driveway. Only positive was I had to stay over the girls house overnight and had lots of fun!!! As for the car it went to the junkyard. This was in 1987 so the car was around 5 years old. Too bad it was a good looking car with the RX7 wheels but again a 1980's Mazda is no Datsun or Toyota!
if u parked on a slope front facing down. and is some what low on coolant. it gets air in the radiator. and overheats. if u have a volt meter. it would tell u is over heating on the temp gauge
They add that part before the retro clip. If you pull up the "1990 GM10 Bodies" Retro Review you'll see what it sounded like before in addition to seeing both websites on the slide.
