      An ATINY from 2020 here, ateez was so underrated since the beginning. They literally had their songs cut on music shows. they gained a lot of popularity after kingdom legendary war in 2021, they but tbh i dont really feel like they became famous until 2023 in bouncy era, and then in crazy form era. I don't think Underrated is the right term. It's not a question of whether people think of Ateez of talented, it's are they as popular as they should be? Usually the issue is single sales. They debuted in 2018 and only had one song chart in the top 50 until 2023 - Deja Vu (which hit 49; The Real did hit no 14 but that was because it was from their appearance on Kingdom). On the other hand, their album sales have continued to grow from 100k for their debut All to Zero to 1.6 and 1.8 million for their last two albums this year. They still aren't the biggest group in terms of high charting singles but that doesn't take anything away from their success. Every one in Kpop loves to throw that term underrated around. For example, Mamamoo - they were called underrated for years (even now I hear it), but the reality is everyone in Korea knows how talented they are - it's just a question of sales and popularity, which isn't the same thing.

    • @jiminnomonroll
      @jiminnomonroll Před 3 dny +3

      i agree. i mean they gathered a pretty decent sized fanbase since predebut, had their first world tour pretty quickly after debut which is impressive considering they're from a not so big company, had literally just debuted, etc. plus, weren't ateez said to be one of the most popular boy groups not from a big company? anyways, I think ateez has a pretty good popularity from what I've seen, maybe more internationally than in sk. but despite that, I think that's fine and I think they're doing really well for a group that isn't from a big company. and I love how much attention they've gain over the years, especially recently. it makes me so happy. just because they aren't big like some bg doesn't mean they aren't appreciated. maybe it's not enough for us but it's still smth :) let's not forget all the achievements and successes they've made like appearing on kingdom, their immortal songs wins, being the first bg to perform at coachella?? the titles they've been given, the praise they've received from non atiny and even other idols too and more ^^

  • @teeleaf9252
    @teeleaf9252 Před 3 dny +21

    I agree with most of the comments, they're not exactly underrated, but they are most definitely being slept on. Especially in Korea; I don't know what it is exactly about that specifically, but from Bouncy era to now there's been a significant increase in our boys popularity, I think them making more appearances outside of extremely mainstream American events , like Vmas for example, has helped push their performance factor to the public more than just your overly done "wow good looking singing and dancing Korean people" bs that gets thrown around. Even for them to be the first kpop act in Mawazine to their full collaboration with a Jpop group is something that feels more authentic to what music and audience they cater to and are truly inspired by. So they may not be sky rocketing to the top , _yet_ , but they're on a path that feels most true to them and us Atiny who found them and resonate with their sound.

    The thing with the domestic popularity is that korean media outlets plays a huge role in promoting groups there, but as suspicious as it can be, when it comes to ATEEZ it's mostly crickets. There were many ateez moments in the past years that are viral-worthy esp in the korean media but it's ALL FRUSTRATINGLY QUIET. Not even this year where they have so many iconic milestones like Coachella and Mawazine. Like there has to be something going on behind the scene. How come an idol from a big company there becomes trending and the korean media outlets going insane and noisy over them just because they changed their hair color?? Meanwhile ATEEZ literally graced both the 2 largest music festival in the world and you barely get traction on it from their side. One of the Billboard journalist that mostly make articles about Kpop also shared that he finds it quite interesting that when he got interview in Korea, and he mentions ATEEZ, they got real quiet and they didn't even include them. Someone or something is definitely suspicious cause why is this only happening to ATEEZ???

    They are underrated, Ateez has been the only group that have take my attention when it comes to kpop, because of the professionalism they have, combined with stage presence, dancing, live singing, work ethic and beyond anything else their good music and they always find a way to do only good songs… for me they are the most consistent and well rounded group right now and yes, they have gained some popularity already but Ateez as I have mentioned they have always been consistent since the beginning and still took upon till last year for them to get some recognition and that’s insane and when you think about what other kpop groups are out there right now (no taking away anything from the other groups cause there is so much talent) Ateez is the best on everything and still they don’t have a recognition that other groups have just because they are not from a big company. I know Ateez is going to get there eventually because they are so good but never forget that in order for them to became as big as they are right now (or in the future) Ateez has fight for their spot in the kpop industry. Their story reminds me a lot of BTS story and I hope they get the same success as well!

They are the only male group of the 4th generation that got into the top 5 in terms of subscribers on different platforms and are not in big4 companies. Ateez were also at Coachella, their album sales are also good. They are gaining popularity, and it is extremely wrong to say that they are still undervalued/underrated.
    The only thing I don't like is the lack of promotion of songs that could be very popular, in the new album it's "Siren" and "Blind" .It is also a minus and sad that they work very hard, for so many months in a row, starting from March-April , there is a Japanese comeback, then Coachella, after promotion with Work and trips to different shows, now they also filmed a collaboration with a Japanese band. Like they have so much potential to go viral internationally even with their all Korean tracks. Like they have many songs that can have a blockbuster MV but kq chooses to not make an MV. Moreover sometimes the song that is given an MV isn't really adaptable or easy to vibe with. Now don't come at me when i say that WORK was a good song but it was just missing that ATEEZ element in it. I feel like blind should've been the title track considering how many Spanish and latinos liked it.
    One more thing is that SK is just not used to ATEEZ'S sound. Same goes for skz which are quite similar to atz. Sk either prefers girl groups or boy groups that have soft songs and don't go all metal rock like atz and skz.

    I agree with most sentiments here but I do believe that they’re being held back whether intentionally or unintentionally by Korean Media/organizations. I remember when they finally spoke how they met BTS and how BTS congratulated them after covering their song at the 2019 MAMAs but didn’t/couldn’t say anything about it for 2 years. Even Jeff Benjamin said he would mention Ateez in interviews and it would be automatically removed before posting. Even when they just started doing dance challenges, no big company idols interacted with them only groups from smaller companies that looked up them. I do believe that there is a strong for against them but ATEEZ just keeps moving on and I respect them for that cuz I know they’ll be able to overcome it all.

      Something fishy in k-pop.
      Also, many Korean media focus more on negative things (for non Big4).🦸🏻‍♂️
      Ateez became the 1st k-pop group to perform in one of the biggest festivals (Mawazine). 💖
      📛Mawazine 2024: "a real success", historic attendance with more than 2.5 million festival-goers.
      "In this edition, the moments of sharing between stars and festival-goers were particularly intense, marked by... the electrifying show of ATEEZ."🦹🏻
      🎬International media praised Ateez more than Korean media.
      Maybe this is the reason groups with more negative publicity for at least one time are more famous in Korea. 💭
      I hope KQ never do these types of negative things.😅
      Even though it helps in gaining publicity, but it can affect idol's mental health.😶‍🌫️

It was always going to be an uphill battle getting mainstream western recognition bc people who don’t follow kpop see every kpop group as another BTS or blackpink. In terms of their talent and their music they are incredibly well loved internationally and also (as others have said) by many rookie idols. In my opinion they should go down as one of the greatest groups of all time, but for now I’m just enjoying the ride

    They are definitely not underated, but i think in korea, they were there, but also not there? Like if they do concerts in Korea, it would sold out, but at the same time, their songs are not popular? Like come on, korean articles barely wrote them about their successful coachella performances, mawazine (despite being the 2nd largest festival in the world and having more than 100k audience) , billboard and uk charts. Like if they are from a big company, you can see those articles right away.
    Altho i think they will be more popular in the next era, like in this era, they have gone alot of university festivals, popular korean YT shows, etc.

  • @donttalk372
    @donttalk372 Před 3 dny +130

    HUGE SIGNIFICANT REASONS FOR THEIR UNPOPULARITY:
    1. ATEEZ is a boy group
    2. Ateez is from a nugu company. That throws away company loyalists who like supporting the company instead of the idol.
    3. ATEEZ' discography on the surface doesn't appeal to the general public of SK.
    4. The company doesn't take risks on promoting and pushing forward the visuals of the group that bring in visually invested fans. People still dont know who the visuals are!!!
    5. KQ doesn't promote the most popular members.
    6. The group is scandal free. There is nothing to critique or shame them. Their image is too clean and that doesn't make for good business. Being clean is not bad though.
    7. The fandom is internally at war. Its mostly the solo stans with the issues.
    8. The group is full. They have perfect vocalists, rappers, dancers, charismatics, and performers. It has recently become a trend to bash groups that lack in something
    9. The company still hasn't found its primary audience.
    10. The company doesn't like to take risks. They don't promote their songs properly. The easiest way to do this is through making music videos of multiple songs, but it's usually one and thats it. Like i don't mind, let them do them. But keeping songs in the basement and just promoting them on tour is bad bad bad business. There are so many songs of theirs where they confirmed music videos for and they didn't come through.
    So many songs are in the basement: WDIG, Outlaw, Django, Dune, Siren, Blind, Silver light, cyberpunk, emergency, we know, sector one. Most of their songs had potential to go viral, but they just dont want to do so.
    They should have taken the opportunity to make a video for DUNE when DUNE the movie had come out. That was free press just wasted.
    And with Blind, its the same issue. Like whoever does their strategic planning should be FIRED because they make the group PLAY SUPER HARD instead of SMART. That's where the groups issue is. They work toooooo much and they get just a 1/5 for all the work.
    All they need to do, is BLESS THE FANS MINDS VISUALLY.!!!! ITS THAT SIMPLE. but oh well....maybe in 2025.
    Lastly, KQ should stop pushing them to go on tour every 6 business days.

    • @donttalk372
      @donttalk372 Před 3 dny +29

      Lastly, ATEEZ doesn't have a good standing relationship with the Korean media. And we all know that the Korean media is responsible for making most groups be accepted into the Korean scene. The symbiotic relationship hasn't yet been formed.

    • @Megan-bw5zh
      @Megan-bw5zh Před 3 dny +15

      @@donttalk372 It will never be formed because ateez are from a small company with no big seniors that make it worthwhile for the press to build a relationship with them for.
      A good press relationship is a transaction, "be nice and write a lot about that rookie so maybe the company will let you interview their super star seniors who will give you a lot of clicks"
      If you look closely the press doesn't have any special relationship with any K-pop group beyond the big4 companies and as long as KQ has nothing more popular in Korea to offer neither ateez nor kq can change it, no matter how much they try.

    • @Megan-bw5zh
      @Megan-bw5zh Před 3 dny +53

      There's a lot to unpack here, but let me tell you something important: the whole fandom seems to acknowledge that ateez come from a small company without understanding what that means in practice.
      Ateez don't usually do multiple MVs (although WILL had 5! Because they were slightly lower quality) and don't promote multiple songs on music shows not because they don't want to take risks but because it costs money. MVs are ridiculously expensive and nowadays that includes advertising money because otherwise the views won't be as high as their "usual", music shows aren't very popular anymore, appearances there rarely bring new fans and as we recently learned cost a lot of money...
      KQ isn't afraid of taking risks they are just on a stricter budget compared to big companies.
      That's also why ateez tour a lot, it's one of the most profitable parts of the business.
      We need to remember that KQ has only Ateez (as a profitable group) and started of in a financial deficit that they only overcame in 2020, they have a pretty slim yearly profit because what Ateez earns gets re-invested in their next comeback.
      I think Atiny need to really think about it before requesting any extra promotions from them.
      I know it's not a nice thought but looking at their financial statements Ateez are still the type of the group that is one long hiatus or failed comeback away from getting the company to the brink of bankruptcy again.

    • @detergenthwachae
      @detergenthwachae Před 3 dny +35

      About tours... firstly, they earn the most while touring. Secondly, that's literally what they are best at. And last but not least, they only now started gaining attention in South Korea. There's a clip of a Seoul soundcheck where Korean atinys literally don't know lyrics to Wave aka literally one of their most popular songs. KQ knows Ateez' power lies in international fandom. That's why they are basically in Korea only to record and promote new album lmao

    Hi - sorry - but the pronunciation of the members' names needs a bit of work... I mean, for example, it's "Yeosang" (여상) not Yuk-sang, and "Seonghwa" (성화), not Sung-kwa...
    That said, you also forgot to mention their Japanese releases - aren't they one of the first k-pop groups to release Japanese singles that AREN'T just translations of songs they already had in Korean? But ATEEZ has a VERY strong Japanese fan club, and now releases a new Japanese single every 6 months or so at least (the first was "Dreamers," then "Paradigm," "Limitless," "Not Okay" - and now they also just released the collaboration with BE: FIRST, "Hush-Hush," a couple days ago.
    Also, the mention of them "starring" in "KQ Fellaz" about training in the US - that makes it sound like it was an already-established show or something that they starred in, but it was actually more like a vlog they made during their month in LA, akin to the logbooks they put out now but with far less staff involved in its production. They literally didn't have enough beds for everyone to sleep on during that time and had to play a game to decide who got to use them; and KQ hadn't hired a choreographer for them to go train with exclusively in LA - they just flew there and KQ gave them a bit of money to literally go to dance studios and sign up for classes at a couple different studios so their days would be full of training, praying that they got there in time to secure slots to fit their schedule for all 9 of them (there was 1 more member at that time). They really were just taking the same dance classes anyone off the street could - but it was an incredibly smart way to use what little money the company had, because then instead of learning exclusively from one trainer for maybe an hour or two a day and then practicing on their own for the rest of the time, they got to learn from various teachers at various studios for entire days full of lessons, and it shows in their dance versatility (even if that's BRUTAL training).
    Anyway, sorry - I just get a bit salty because there are certain fandoms that shall not be named that still like to imply that ATEEZ "actually" had WAY more help and insider connections than THEIR group has (even though said group is from one of the Big 4), and they use things like that webseries as their "proof," as if it was some glamourous show that was following them with millions of people watching, instead of the simple vlog put up by their company on a CZcams channel that doesn't even post anything else anymore. I mean, the boys even had to go on the street with handmade signs to try to get people to come watch them *busking*, for Pete's sake (and were ecstatic when they met ONE person who actually recognized them!). So yeah, it gets twisted and misinterpreted a lot.
    But I'm super proud as an ATINY, even though I only found them during the "Guerrilla" era - it's amazing how much is happening this year, but I'm still holding out hope they'll get more, like they deserve!

    They are getting some things they deserve but they still get cheated. When you think of things like festivals, Ateez proved long before big4 4th gen acts , that they can bring in bodies by selling out at tour 4 months after debut then sold out arenas 1 year after debut. The sold out arenas tour made them the fastest Kpop act to sell a 100k+ seat tour in the shortest time from debut in Kpop History. Who got invites for festivals, TV events like Dick Clark new years, Macy's parade etc, which are about bringing in bodies? big 4 acts who weren't doing what Ateez did. ATEEZ were even in New York during Macy's Day parade yet didn't get an invite and that year there was no Kpop act though big4 got invites previously . It's almost 6 years in and Kelly was Ateez first tv stage performance invite after we tweeted, etc for years to many shows while others got invites even many years ago. 2023 Ateez joined BTS and Blackpink as the Only Kpop groups to ever chart UK Official albums chart top 10. They actually were num 2 which even beat Jkook's solo album which was number 3 that year. So literally Ateez had the highest charting kpop album period for the UK chart. Who did MTV/Europe nominate for the awards? Big 4 acts that can't even chart well on the UK albums chart which is tougher than BB200. So explain how Ateez outdid All of Kpop yet big4 got the nominations? Ateez got Coachella and were the most talked about act yet Coachella not only copyrighted tweets that were already hitting a million views, they shut down twitt, tik tok etc. some accts had 60k followers and they weren't even warned. They copyright and had their accounts closed. All the hype Ateez had yet we had no fancams to keep hyping. Then Ateez were the Only Coachella act who's stage wasn't uploaded on CZcams so interested people had nothing to see. They uploaded Ateez stage a month later when people had already watched the other uploads then moved on. Ateez made history on the UK chart with those 3 top 10 albums but I'm waiting to see if it's big4 nominations again for UK awards.
