The Pontifical University of the Holy Cross in Rome is hosting an exhibition on St. Therese of Lisieux. It's an interesting study of her life, but above all, it shows what was in her heart.

Saint Thérèse of Lisieux (French: Sainte-Thérèse de Lisieux), born Marie Françoise-Thérèse Martin (2 January 1873 - 30 September 1897), also known as Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face, O.C.D., was a Roman Catholic French Discalced Carmelite nun widely venerated in modern times.
She is popularly known as "The Little Flower of Jesus" or simply "The Little Flower".
Thérèse has been a highly influential model of sanctity for Catholics and for others because of the "simplicity and practicality of her approach to the spiritual life".
Together with Saint Francis of Assisi, she is one of the most popular saints in the history of the church.
Pope Pius X called her "the greatest saint of modern times".
Thérèse felt an early call to religious life, and overcoming various obstacles, in 1888 at the early age of 15, she became a nun and joined two of her elder sisters in the cloistered Carmelite community of Lisieux, Normandy.
After nine years as a Carmelite religious, having fulfilled various offices such as sacristan and assistant to the novice mistress, and having spent her last eighteen months in Carmel in a night of faith, she died at age 24, following a slow and painful fight against tuberculosis.
Her feast day is 1 October (3 October in the extraordinary form).
Thérèse is well known throughout the world, with the Basilica of Lisieux being the second-largest place of pilgrimage in France after Lourdes.

Yeah, but is she a Saint merely because of the time period she was born in??? I'm a die hard Catholic and I love St. Therese, but when I read about her I can't help but wonder. Of course she was a Holy person....but, I mean, do you really think she would have been so eager to spend her life in a convent if she had been born in 1983 instead of 1873???
Is her holiness due more the time frame she grew up in?? Back then there were not that many opportunities for young girls. You either got married and raised a family or you became a Nun.
Do you really think Therese....a cute, young, upper-middle class French girl (today) would have followed the same route?? I highly doubt it???

It's difficult to comprehend that St. Theresa did not have a great devotion to our BVM and did not like saying the rosary. I wonder if the rest of her sisters felt the same as she regarding the Blessed Virgin Mary. Anyway... St Bernadette and St Theresa were not on the same page as crazy as that seems and yet they are great Catholic saints.

She did indeed have a devotion to the Virgin...have you not read Story of a Soul? That she had trouble praying the rosary is not surprising, since her entire religious life was one of dryness in prayer, brought on in part by systemic tuberculosis.

Russell Montminy Hello! I do not understand why some people believe that St. Therese had no devotion to The Blessed Mother. The Carmelite order to which St. Therese and, three of her sisters belonged, plus a cousin is a Marian order. They believe: " To Jesus through Mary". On top of that St.Therese wrote a poem entitled: Why I Love You Mary. St. Therese did pray the rosary and, she herself stated that she could not understand why she said it so badly because, she had a devotion to the Virgin Mary. As for St. Bernadette, you will find that no 2 saints are alike. Some have been called for special missions, while others reach sainthood in ordinary events of daily life. What all saints have in common is that they have a very deep relationship with God, they sin less than the most of us and, all have wanted to be saints. That is one petition God will not deny anyone who really aspires to reach sainthood. Anyone desiring to really be a saint must love God before anything or, anyone else. HE must come first as he did for our saints ; diregarding all walks in this life. I think you should read : The Story of A Soul and, other books on saints lives. I, myself am a Lay Carmelite and, the director of my community. God bless you!

You are wrong about her devotion to the Virgin Mary! Their was a statue of the Virgin Mary on her family home that she loved very much, called Our Lady of the Smile! Therese experienced a miraculous cure of a serious illness after praying for a cure before this statue. She actually saw the statue Smile at her and was immediately cured! She speaks about it in her autobiography, The Story of a Soul!
