Faster than the GTR Nismo from a couple of year ago, almost as fast as the 600bhp+ SLS Black now! Can't wait to see what the AMG GT R is capable of! That car is ought to do a low 1:32 or so I think.
I highly highly highly doubt its going to be as fast as the Viper TA, which is a 640hp NA track car that stock can only do 1:33s. Will likely break into 1:34s, maybe 1:33s if lucky, but 32s not a chance in hell.
No I think it will break the 1:32 mark. Way more downforce, less weight, really sticky tyres and more power than the current AMG GT-S adds to more than 4 seconds quicker.
sexyitalian891 If you think the GT R is a mere performance package over the GT S, you are badly mistaken. It features a healthy engine upgrade (+75bhp), wider tracks and tyres with a tighter suspension tune, further reduced polar inertia(The front facia is made from magnesium, fenders and other body panels from carbon fibre, which also reduce kerb weight), a lot more downforce with REDUCED drag(active aerodynamics), plus it has rear wheel steering capability.
That's a very hefty list of upgrades.
the R have all totally new back chassy and suspension basicly the end of the car is new.
similar to the C63 sedan/wagon vs coupe in a way (wider track rear steer etc etc)

This is the advantage of using a pro for these, very consistent laptimes. For C&D's Lightning Laps I didn't mind that they used editors but they seemed to use a different one for each car (and some of the drivers were no where near as fast as the others). If they had taken the best time from each editor and used that lap that would've been one thing but that did not seem to be the case.

Not true, all the editors drove the car's and they published the fastest time the editors could get out of them.

Big fan of Randy Pobst doing the hot laps. Keep him on the payroll. Consistency from a good driver rather than a variety of editors talking about how the center console evokes memories of grandpa's recliner or some such nonsense.

Not much power but still 4th fastest. This car is so underrated. Mercedes build an awesome cahssie , this car handles great! Like some others said i cant imagine the AMG GT R

This car is absolutely gorgeous and performs so well. I know some people hate mustangs, but they can't deny how impressive it is that the GT350R runs Mazda raceway only a second slower than this car and costs 100K less

1:35.30 in a GT car at laguna seca is one hell of a lap time. Its a rear wheel drive coupe with all the luxuries. Cant wait to see what the GTR does around laguna seca! I consider myself lucky to own a 16 GTS, 17 gt350r and a 16 gt4. If motortrend didnt have these best drivers car competition I may have not purchased them. Thank you all the passionate guys at @motortrend that put together these amazing competitions.

ive done unimaginable research on most new cars, this gt s is an incredible car. the only things i'd really change have already almost all been done... on the new gt r. theres no other front engine car err front mid engine car that can pull off what these new amg's can.... well the 991 gt3 rs is very close to the gt s to me, and the Ferrari f12 tdf is similar to the gt r but it just cant keep the power down with everything turned off and yes I know it has 200 extra hp but even still I believe the amg gt-r will put down one incredible time. I imagine the gt r will be able to pull a 1:31 or 1:32 at mazda raceway and probably even a 1:29 if put on trofeo r's. I really hope they eventually make an amg gt-r black series with similar power to or greater than the sls black series - that car was pretty flawed but that's part of what made it special and even in my top 5 fav newish cars
IMO Merc knocked it out of the park with the AMG GTR. Be sure to have it next year.

technically isn't out yet. People get their cars next year I belive, I mean it's still been spotted going round the ring for testing or official laptime

Such beautiful lines on that car ruined by that spoiler. The car is too elegant for it. They should've made the wing retractable. Not a hard achievement with all that is possible with active aero in cars these days.

Hi Motor Trend Channel. I don't want to impose, but could you find out whether Randy thinks the GT S is competitive with the Viper ACR that he loved so much. I'm going to get one or the other, and just wonder if he thinks the Viper takes all (on the track). Not sure what the ACR would run at Laguna. ?? Thank you!

A g-meter that shakes around like that on a seat will not measure any sensible data. It rather looks like telemetry(processing the data and saving it) and/or video-recording equipment.

Yet the gt350 was less then 1 second slower and $100,000 less. A simple $500 tune could fix that. That gt350 should earn the best drivers car award in my opinion. By far the greatest bang for your buck
