Man, you're going to be so scr*wed up when the next episodes in Series 8 and 9 might be hinting more about a platonic romance than an actual platonic father-daughter relationship.
Dany was clearly Clara's second fiddle in her love triangle between the newly-minted eldery/late middle aged looking Doctor and a Human who basically was fashioned/brainwashed/groomed (albeit accidentally so) from childhood to be to Clara what Metacrisis Doctor was to Rose (although we may argue that, in an exemplary yet subtly creepy case of Moffat Paradox/bootstrap paradox, the Doctor and Clara somewhat accidentally groomed each other too across time, incarnations and space... which is basically what Rose and the Doctor did too-- WHATEVER!) during much of the second half of Series 8.

The scene of the confrontation between Dany Pink and Twelfth Doctor was so memorable. I loved how Dany nudged on every single button as the Doctor looked him down, and how the Time Lord's aristocratic, almost godlike, darker persona snapped off his facade and lorded him away.
It somewhat reminds me of the manner whom the Doctor during his Ninth and Tenth incarnations treated Mickey Smith at times, although Mickey has neither the wisdom nor the backbone and soldier guilt trip driven gravitas behind Dany's eyes, voice and body language. Ironically, as a black man (albeit from Canada) , I can't help but notice how the Doctor in NuWho, pre-Chibnall Era, seems peculiarly tense at times around male coloured Human companions-to-be, bordering even to what a few British and French newspapers back to the late 2000s to early 2010s suspected sometimes to be the writers and showrunners's - and moreso of corporate Britain's zeitgest - unconscious gender biased r*cism toward black people: being tense, hostile, competitive and condescending about black men, but open minded and prejudice-free toward black women who advances further in the social ladder especially after entertaining intimate or se%ual relations with the patrons.
Dany, Mickey, and even to a certain extent Donna's companions (antagonists or not) ... and even, to some extent and oddly, _one recent very creepy incarnation of the Master in a more controversial Chibnall Era epidode_ - never had the same treatment that companions and never-bes such as Martha Jones, Mels (e.g. River Song) , Bill or even Journey Blue of all people ( a _soldier_ ) had with the Time Lord. It was both cathartic to me and weird: because due to my highborn African pedigree and background, I could relate to the Doctor, while as a black man I could equally understand Dany's points and enjoying his quick-witted sassiness and leverage over the moment without condoning either of their stances.

I enjoyed The Caretaker for the Doctor's comedic attempts at blending in, mostly because you can just tell that Peter was having fun with it. Though I admit, I've always remembered it most for when he mistakes Clara's new boyfriend as the guy (Adrian) who dressed like Matt Smith, seemingly so pleased that she'd found someone who resembled his old incarnation. I couldn't even recall the villain of the episode until you reminded me. 😅
Lmao, I forgot the hilarity of Danny calling the Doctor Clara's "space dad," followed by his response of "How can you think that I'm her dad when we both look exactly the same age?'' 😆

This is one thing I always liked about Capaldi's Doctor. He's the doctor that basically took the issues that bugged 10 and 11, and finally resolve those issues, allowing 13 to really have a fresh start that 9-12 never really got.

I like when Characters challenge the Doctor and the Doctor end sup feeling uncomfortable cus they need to face some hard truths and are looking at a reflection of the parts of themselves they hate. In Time Heist it was Psi commenting on the Doctor's coldness and emotional detachment and apathy and indifference and self imposed isolation and in this episode it is Danny confronting the Doctor about his past and his arrogance and his attitude. It's always a really interesting thing to explore cus the companion often becomes blind to the faults of the Doctor. sucked in by their charm and whimsy and by the promise of adventure and excitement so when the faults are brought to the front it's like their worldview is being shattered. I love exploration of character dynamics like this.

Talking about Pre-Chibnall era I think that what comes off as The Doctor being tense around black men should be thought of in the context of "The Doctor being tense around black men that happen to be romantically involved with his companion". Excepting Amy of course, Rose, Donna and Clara all had black boyfriends and in the seasons they weren't involved the companion herself was black as in the case of Bill and Martha.
I think this just speaks that Pre-Chibnall the showrunners more frequently involved black men as romantic interests for the companion instead of somehow expressing some distaste for black men through the Doctor. The Doctor was indeed tense around black men but also most of the angry/confused bfs he had to deal with were black. That's not to say Chibnall is biased or anything since in his era a black guy got upgraded to full companion status.

Anyone else thrown off by the out of the blue, very bizarre "fatherly" comment??? talk about wrong end of the stick!
that interpretation is such a flattening of the dimensions of their relationship, and a very face value perspective based in nothing but capaldi's age. when compared to twelve and bill's relationship, it's very clear that twelve and clara don't interact in a 'father/daughter' way at all. twelve and clara are canonically best friends and equals who used to have a 'will they won't they' -- it would be gross to call twelve's interactions with clara fatherly no matter what age the actor was lol. (sorry but i literally shuddered with horror hearing "he's like a proud father" about him approving of clara dating a guy who looks like previous him... in what universe is it a fatherly sentiment to be like 'cool that you think younger me is hot'???)
it also lowkey feels insulting to the actors to suggest a platonic relationship between an older man and a younger woman has to be "fatherly", as if capaldi and coleman aren't capable of playing....complex toxic friendship?
in a platonic besties reading of that scene, it's clear that he's pleased because he's FLATTERED. he shut the door to that aspect of their relationship back in deep breath and they've moved on as friends since, but seeing her move on romantically with a guy who reminds him of eleven appeals to his ego and makes him feel like he made the right move in saying 'it isn't going to be like that anymore' in deep breath. the twelfth doctor is pleased about this not as a father figure (vomit), but because clara dating adrian makes SENSE to him, it confirms his assessment of their prior relationship when he was eleven, as well as where they stand with each other now. It's a "aha, I was right, that's what she wants, how cute, I'm so smart and I'm glad we're besties now" vibe.
i mean half the reason danny's 'he's ur space dad' is so funny is because a) totally reasonable assumption for danny to make and b) clara and the doctor are both lowkey like 'ew' because it is not a paternal relationship
i really like this episode because of the intricate character drama, and i think the breakdown of danny here is great (he's maligned way too much in the fandom despite being very human in his responses, particularly in this episode)! but calling the doctor's reactions here "fatherly" strips away context and complexity just as much as calling it a "love triangle" would (and in a much grosser way imho).

  • @thekueken

I appreciated the take (the show's and HW's) on what's basically a superhero double identity.
It's relatable / realistic to the degree, that neither a hero in disguise nor a companion would tell just about anyone they've just met about their extra-curriculars, be it because it might make them sound crazy, or to protect themselves (in case they may have misjudged the person in front of them) or, to a degree, to protect the other person.
And while getting to know the person, the lies add up. When does the hero/companion come clean? When is the best time? Or is there simply a point of no return where the reveal would inevitably destroy that relationship.. which was already built upon lies and by keeping an essential part of their person and life a secret...
Yet, I despise lots of the supposed reasonings:
"I'm doing it to protect them" - no, you don't tell your enemies about your friends for that reason, but if you enemies find out about your identities, your enemies may target your loved ones just the same whether your loved ones know about you or not. Knowing would in fact keep them safer, as they can prepare themselves for that eventuality.
"I lied for so long, I can't go back" - as above mentioned, a risk and the truth may (temporarily) hurt and estrange the loved ones, but after that realization consciously stacking even more lies is morally much worse than to 'just rip of the band-aid', it's fear holding you back, not a good reason.
"They will look at me differently." - Wrong. They are looking differently at you now, because they don't know your whole self. It's just selecting what they get to see, and on a smaller scale, that is okay (white lies) but since we are talking about a whole identity, a whole life lived separately, this is not a good reason. If anything it's the very reason why the truth should be shared.
"They wouldn't understand" - either that means you need to properly explain it to them or you might need to reflect on your actions or they may not be the one for you... y'know, the whole of you... at least not at this point of your life. Or they might surprise you, but you deprive them of that chance.
Secret identities are sort of a trope at this day and age, and they always lead to more trouble (the longer they are kept up) than the coming out would have, for all parties involved... (and yes, there is a RL parallel to be made)
Surely such a reveal has to be treated with caution and care, but Clara having dated Danny for a good year(?) is one of these instances where good reasons have long since gone with the wind.
But I do not blame the episode for it. On the contrary, it affirms and sets up character traits, conflict and themes. And, as I said at the top... sometimes the lies just stack up when the relationship is still in the "getting to know each other" limbo and suddenly it feels as if one's past the point of no return... "There's just never been a good moment to tell them." - No, there hardly ever is for big reveals, but one can at least try to seed the idea, to sprinkle in parts of the truth, maybe even hint at the reality of having a secret... And... it kinda fits Clara's gun-ho character/attitude (maybe even perceiving herself that sort of superhero with a secret identity), that she rather aimed to keep these two halves of herself separate...

As much as a Love 12, particularly in this series, I always felt that the weird Soldier Bias aspect of the character was kinda disrespectful to The Brigadier and the rest of Classic UNIT. I know it started with 10 really and I understand that it comes from the self-loathing of his Time War era being projected outwards, but it never sat right with me with any incarnation Post 9, especially given things like the casual Cyberman Genocide in "A Good Man Goes To War".

A good episode overall. Like how it focuses on Clara's double life where she tries to have the best of both worlds travelling in the Tardis with the Doctor and also trying to have a normal life on Earth with Danny at the same time. She feels caught between the two men who are most important to her, and her response is to lie to them both. Not the best way to cope in these situations but she she feels she can't give up either so she tries to hide the realities of both from the Doctor and Danny. Now neither can fully trust her. Fans have criticized Clara for this in the past but I can see why she does this even if I don't agree with it. I used to do the same in a past relationship to avoid telling the truth to a partner fearing their negative reactions to something only to have it blow up in my face later on when they found out the truth anyways. She has to own up and be honest to the Doctor and Danny otherwise she might lose them both. She has to learn her lesson the hard way in the end.
Danny comes off as being more realsitic in this episode than how he was in Listen. His and Clara's relationship is also more believable thought I still prefer her platonic one with the Doctor instead. Danny pushes the Doctor's buttons until he finally snaps, we finally get to see a little bit of the alien hidden behind the human-like face. The Doctor can be overly superior and condescending at times, that's the Timelord in them. But Danny sees through him in a way, one former soldier to another, even mock saluting him which the Doctor can't stand of course.
Capaldi is great as always. 12 is funny, sarcastic, aloof and oblivious at different times. Yet, he thinks he has everything under contol until the stupid humans botch his plans to trap and deal with the robot. It was hilarious when he though Clara liked the teacher who looked a little like 11. He was so happy about that. maybe he remebered again when 11 fancied Clara and thought it was cute that she found someone who reminded her of him. The killer robot is campy, very Doctor Who-ish, it's fine for the episode but fairly forgetable in the end.
The funny thing I didn't realize when I first watched this episode is when Clara was talking about Jane Austin to the students in her class and described her as a great kisser. I thought, "How would she know that?". I found out later that she actually met Jane Austin in one of her travels with the Doctor and actually kissed her herself. That completely flew over my head! I never thougth of Clara as possibly being bi-sexual. So does that mean that her and Me might end up in a relationship at some point if they travel together long enough and get close to each other? Who knows, though I hope not. I'd prefer to think that her one big platonic love/ friendship would be with the Doctor instead. Those two were meant for each other. Would have loved to have seen that kiss with Jane Austin though! 😅

I liked most of this episode for what it was trying to do, but the one thing that bothered me about this whole arc was that the Doctor's friends Lethbridge-Stewart, John Benton, and Mike Yates were all soldiers and he never gave them any such venom. Yes, he has guilt issues for being the War Doctor, which was long after UNIT, but he's old enough and smart enough to know that not all things or people can be broadly painted with but one brush.

    • @Kartissa
      @Kartissa Před rokem +3

I see it has him having had to do things in the Time War that would have horrified Lethbridge-Stewart, and being ashamed that he couldn't find a way to avoid them. He hated what he'd become, because he felt that the Brigadier would have hated him. And since he was a soldier in the War, that hatred coloured his perception of *all* soldiers, even the good ones.

Just watching this it makes me really wish they made Danny a medic in the military! It would have really shut up 12 and change his perspective. And it would have still made sense. Danny would have still had basic military training and probably could have gained a command role. Unfortunately today's military medics now have to carry weapons so it would make more sense that they would make a life-changing mistake of killing a child in a war zone with less in combat training. I wish Danny was a longer character. I liked him!

Part of it is the deep un-realisticness of a creature born from the moon almost immediately laying an egg with apparently the same gravitational effect as the one it came from. (There are no reference to changed tides or altered lunar cycles after this episode, and nothing in any shown before but set afterward to indicate a less massive satellite - the 2nd Doctor story 'The Moonbase' depicts a moon with 1/6 Earth's gravity and is set in 2-3 decades after 'Kill the Moon.')
That said, I don't hate the episode. I just don't think it needed to be made.

I don't think the Doctor could be compared to an officer in the time war. He seems to have been completely outside of the chain of command, something more like a rogue one person paramilitary unit. I haven't listened to any of the Big Finish time war stuff, so maybe that depicts things differently, but just going from what we get from the show I always got the impression that the Doctor just kept on Doctoring, going where he was needed and interfering in everybody's plans, just, y'know, a bit more violently.

The Doctor did have an awkward moment with Clara when he says he’s not her boyfriend but he said he was saying it for his own sake and not hers. And he’s all moody. What’s up with that? Acknowledging still having leftover feelings from his time as Eleven?
