  • A historic World War II C-47 that was nearly scrapped is again flying and readying to return to Normandy next year. In this AVweb video, the Commemorative Air Force's Keegan Chetwynd tells the remarkable story of That's All Brother, the airplane that led the D-day invasion.

Generally I don't buy hats for $50, but I made an exception for this airplane. It pains me to see these pieces of history sitting in museums depreciating, or sitting in bone yards as this one was. These machines were built to fly, and as a tribute to the past and as a reminder of the sacrifices made that made the world the way it is, we should fly them. I wish I had more money to give.

Having watched the full length National Geographic documentary about this aircraft on British tv 📺 I agree that “That’s all Brother” was a very important part of the early part of the invasion, however I can’t agree that she led the way, and if any veterans from the allied pathfinders are still alive I think they would also agree. Whilst 300 men wasn’t a huge number in the grand scheme of things they were the first on the ground, first in contact with the German forces, and first to die, either by drowning in the sea or swamps, through enemy action, or shot down/parachute failure, so to describe them as NOT leading the way is, in my heartfelt opinion, an insult to their bravery, tenacity and will to defeat the Germans, the way the contribution of the pathfinders is described it almost seems like the CAF want to brush over their contribution and sacrifice, they were all volunteers just as the parachute regiments were. Instead of saying “that’s all Brother” led the way you could say she “Led the main force” that way you can distinguish between her contribution and the 18 DC-3/C-47/Dakota aircraft that really did “lead the way”. I apologise if my opinion has hurt anyones feelings, but, and there is always a but, it is my opinion, it Is in no way designed to denigrate any off the allied forces who took part in Operation Overlord or WWII in general, I believe that nobody was more important than anyone else and rewriting history in favour of “Thats all Brother” is wrong. If anyone would care to oppose my opinion then fair enough, however if anyone just wants to throw insults at me then all I can say is…………….DILLIGAF.

If it wasn’t for Basler that plane would have been long gone, and certainly wouldn’t have managed a restoration.

Is it too late to contribute to the restoration?

Really appreciate the restoration of this C-47 but is it me or the writing all over it seems excessive? Other than that , good going!
