  • Monstera obliqua is an extremely rare and highly coveted plant amongst aroid collectors. It is one of the most expensive plants in the hobby, often considered one of the “unicorn” plants, and hard to not include in anyone’s wishlist. I visit Jake’s place in Los Angeles who has an amazing specimen. Follow him @keepyourplantson_la on Instagram.

    I'm so encouraged that young people are really getting into plants. It bodes well for our environment when there is an interest in the "natural" world. Believe it or not though, interesting plants have their cycles of popularity. When I first moved to Texas 27 years ago, I went to a begonia sale in Pasadena TX, hosted by all these 70s year old ladies who belonged to the begonia society. They had incredible heirloom begonias that they had bred. I am lucky to still have 2 specimen from that time.
    Sadly, those ladies have passed but I still have an incredible memory of a perfect day of plant shopping, whereby they each taught me how to choose plants and how to propagate.
    Thanks Jimmy and Jake and others who are turning a new generation to plants!

      I think young people are equally excited to get into plants as well. It's good to care for something and watch it grow, especially for those of us who aren't ready or capable of pets or kids haha.

    I'm wondering what the evolutionary benefit is for a plant to have minimal leaf surface. Maybe insects leave it alone because the plant looks already chewed. I think it is a totally cool looking plant and nature is amazing and intelligent!!

    • @annetteprice
      @annetteprice Před 4 lety

      That’s one hypothesis. Another I’ve heard is it helps the plant deal with high winds and rains.

    • @LegendsOfMonstera
      @LegendsOfMonstera  Před 4 lety

      Not sure. Whatever the benefits, they only pertain to very unique environments, thus their rarity and difficulty to grow.

    • @perhapssabrina

      In their natural habitat, lower leaves need sunlight so the plant naturally made holes so the lower leaves could get light equally

    • @Fire-Queen
      @Fire-Queen Před 2 lety +1

      That's a lovely price for any plant!
      Where are you located in the world?
      Unless you are in a South American rainforest, they tend to come with price tags with at least a zero, or two, attached to baby plants such as what you're describing. Is it a true obliqua, though? Usually the monstera adansonii will be sold as being an obliqua. They look similar at first, but are completely different plants.

  • @jaoc4283
    @jaoc4283 Před 4 lety +5

    • @LegendsOfMonstera
      @LegendsOfMonstera  Před 4 lety +3

      Obliqua can produce runners but that it’s their signature is false information. Lots of monstera species produce runners from time to time. Yes, even the regular common adansonii can occasionally do it.

      I use them. The quantity should be minimal just like regular fertilizer if your plants are in pots. My plants are on the ground so I put as much as I want, the plant can decide and knows how much to take. I don't have worries like over fertilizing or burning the plants since compost is biodegradable. Remember, not all compost are the same, you should know what in it if you plan on buying. It's best to make your own.

      Many times, nurseries misname and sell the M. adansoii as an M. obliqua either because they're not well versed in what the differences are, or to sell them at a higher price tag, or to get more people to come back to their shops. M. obliqua is so rare that nurseries will never sell them commercially unlike their more robust cousin, the M. adansoii, that grows fairly rapidly. If sold, a true M. obliqua would be over €2,100/$2,500/¥264,000/£1,900 for a small specimen.
