Haha totally. Though not all their care methods will work for everyone, this does suggest that some of us may be overdoing things just a tad haha
These plants are in huge pots. They wouldn’t need watering as much because there’s so much soil compared to the size of plant. I think using a water meter is still important.
Agreed! When they said 4 weeks in the summer I was shocked. Especially with them living in California. I live in London and my plants go dry very quickly, even in the winter. Not watering them for 4 weeks would just dry the roots to a crisp. The pot size definitely matters and I think they don't realise most people prefer a snugger size for their plants.
They’re also not in terra-cotta though which dries out fast but it appears they’ve definitely found what works for them in their home 😊
I only lightly water the plants when they get watered otherwise they would get root rot just as if they were in a small pot & as far as a moisture meter I have found my finger works better than any device but then again I have been working with plants pretty much my whole life & professionally for about 27 years.
@@socaltropics5225 I suppose having those 27 years of exp helps when it comes to using your finger to determine whether it's dry or not though. :)

Amazing how nicely plants can grow when left on their own. I love their no fuss approach to plants. Those Adansonii are beautiful!
My favorite thing about this plant is that you see how the lack of chlorophyll impacts growth. The white side of the half-white leaves is smaller than the green
they've been in the business so long they deserve those rare plants. Not these instafamous ppl that want them mostly for likes.

I thought about the humidifier issues for a few hours and realized they’re in So California, I’m in hardiness zone 6b. They don’t have forced hot air blowing around the clock. I have a humidifier installed in my HVAC system. If that gets turned off my sinus & skin gets extremely dry. My son’s nose actually bleeds. Can’t imagine what would happen to my plants if I turned off the humidifier. I have two humidifiers going in my plant room and it’s only at 55%. I can’t risk it. Guess it should depend on where you live.
Yeah if you have nosebleeds, it’s likely way too dry for the nose as well as for the plants. I do evaluate most of the care tips and my thoughts much later in the series. Thanks for tuning in friend!
Can certainly relate- where I am in Canada our relative humidity is somewhere between 10-15%. Winter nose bleeds are definitely real. Even with the house humidifier in the HVAC and 2 humidifiers in the plant room it barely reaches 35% -40%. 😒 That being said, I grow over a dozen different orchids and they are all doing great and blooming beautifully... 😊
I completely agree! I’m in the Midwest and even our humidifier attached to the HVAC system can only get our relative humidity to 39% or less in the winter. I have to run a humidifier in the room with my humidity loving plants to supplement. Everyone’s environment is going to be different, so care instructions will be different also.
I'm in Zone 3-4 and our summer max gets only maybe 20-30% humidity. I don't even want to talk about our winter. If we don't wear lotion on our skin, it'll crack ... That's how bad it gets, aside from plants it would be a death zone both summer and winter. Mine needs to be in a terrarium 24/7

Love hearing perspectives of those collecting tropical plants for this long! I definitely agree about humidifiers. I switched over to an evaporative one before winter because the mist concerned me in regards to bacterial issues. I keep my plant room around 55%-60%. 👌🏼
That's really interesting. I got an evaporative cooler for my bedroom recently (Aussie summer) and it's been giving me good humidity as well. I have also read about them being used in greenhouses because you get humidity, airflow and cooling all in one on hot days. I've been reconsidering humidifiers as well because of this. Thanks.
She who grows things! Yes I have noticed such a change. My plants definitely prefer this kind of humidity rather than staying wet. I think it has a lot to do with indoor environments and how we can’t possibly compensate for all the airflow they receive outside, which leads to bacterial problems. Glad to hear you have read that about greenhouses! That definitely makes me feel more confident about it. 🤗
RFW nope none at all. That’s why I use an evaporative one. Don’t like the idea of mist constantly on the leaves indoors. In winter my house is 38% humidity and the evaporative humidifier keeps my higher humidity plant room around 60%. I don’t run it higher bc I get worried about mold issues.
Amazing plants! I let my philodendrons dry out completely before I water them. It's reassuring that I am doing the right thing. I am so jealous of the Adansonii and Pink Princess which I still don't have in my collection as I am waiting for the right plant at the right price. Simply gorgeous!

Wow. Where do you even find these amazing people. I could say from my experience so far that a lot of plants adapt to your environment. I stopped the humidifiers a few months ago and just spray them 2 times in a week and they are doing just fine, all 250☺ lovely video like always😊💚
Glad to see someone talk the truth. Have never in my life time misted or used a humidifier and sorta chuckled to myself when it all became a trend lol. My first thought was omg going to be a lot of weak dying plants out there maybe its so people need to keep buying more instead of having a strong plant that last years ..

Love it! They almost seem to have almost a "hard love" stance with growing their plants. They either will adapt and grow well, or they won't and die. In their case, they're living and thriving!! Thinking back to when I grew orchids, I think bark pieces will only "hold" moisture when it's starting to break down in the mix. Otherwise, water ran straight through the mix and pot. Really love listening to their thoughts with growing... currently doing a "hard love" with vegetable seeds I'm starting outside... LOL though we're still experiencing cold nights, I'm keeping my seeds and seedlings outside so they can try to handle the cold. I think it will make for stronger (vegetable) plants. We shall see. blueovalgal I’ve put a teenage Monstera in super oversized pot, in 80% orchid bark& 20% volcanic soil/ vulkatec.
It put out a double fenestrated leaf after three weeks.
A wealth of information and to see plants most of us dream of!

I do exactly the same with my plants. You can "train" them to be more hardy and tolerate less water, just do it gradually and be patient. ✌️

They are correct I have 2 variegated adansonii monsteras and they don’t like much water and I never mist them and they are thriving!I live in New Orleans so I guess just the natural humidity in my home is enough Great video such nice people.

Interesting to see people with such rare plants like the var. adasonii just using miracle gro and perlite. Miracle gro gets some crap for being bad but if you just put in the right stuff it’s perfectly fine. Miracle gro, perlite, and orchid bark is what I use and my plants grow good plus it’s cheap lol. People get too stressed about getting the “best of the best” with these plants. Love their attitude about making these plants part of their houses and not trying to accommodate for plants and making greenhouses in their homes.

I wish they addressed that these plants are grown only under grow lights. Thus, they will not dry out as quickly as plants in sunlight, so of course they can be a lot more lax with watering.
As the series continues, we address lighting. We have so many plants placed in front of all our windows, some have to be placed further from the windows, so we have to supplement using white LED grow lights for those. We water all the plants the same regardless of lighting.

The bigger the pots the longer duration you water them thus, the smaller pots the shorter duration. So, it depends on the size of the container and what time of the year. Take that into consideration. That’s when you do your adjustments. I love their plants. I love San Diego weather more than the Bay Area for one reason…growing tropical plants.
I've been sharing my life with plants for some 30+ years but I'm in awe of their experience with aroids and collectable plants. However saying that you don't have a humidifier is easy when you live in San Diego and have loads of huge plants all transpiring in smaller spaces. San Diego has an average humidity of 60-70% year round! And I've found that Monsteras are not as sensitive as many people say. You always have to keep your environment, growing conditions and type of plant in mind when decide to use a humifier or not. And if you do use one, proper hygiene is a must!!!

I've always been shocked at the percentage of humidity that people pump into their homes (unless you live in the desert). These plants show how unnecessary they are. I'm looking forward to seeing their other plants.

Well ..... lets say one person in Chicago and another in LA - their indoor humidity and temps will be very different on the same day... These guys are in a particular climate where no augmentation is needed - you have to see how your plants do indoors in your climate - their technique works in their environment.

I assume over time with certain plants your able to train them to not be so finicky/needy more less as they get established with time they adapt to what care you give them

I picked up a monstera adansonii hanging basket at the local greenhouse and upon inspection, it has 3 variegated leaves toward the center of the plant😳 I am super excited as it was only $35!
Great tour and information! I was so impressed that they do not use humidifiers and there is no bark in their soil mix but mostly perlite. I assume they do not use spaghnum. I water my Monstera Borsigiana Albos about every 3 weeks cause of the tendency to rot. Since my mix has bark, after hearing this I assume I can water it less given the bark is holding moisture. I am not going to stress about watering anymore after this. Thanks, Jimmy!
we use spaghnum occasionally propagate and to mount Hoyas

My house stays between 50-60% too and the plants love it. I don’t a humidifier or any anthuriums 😂

I have been growing all kinds of plants for over 54 years yes since i was 17 and have discovered growing plant in the home with a very contolled “human” environment is so much better and easier than growing in a greenhouse or even a solsrium. The reason being it can get extremely hot or too cold or to humid very quickly. This has killed or injured more plants than i can count including rare philodendrons and variagated plants which perform better in controlled ebvironments. The plants in this video are living proof as is knowledge and 10 green thumbs !

Them watering once a month in those huge pots makes sense. I water mine twice a month but it’s in a small planter that dries out relatively quickly. Just wait til that soil is completely dry before watering again. Also, I think people overwater snake pants. I watered mine ONE TIME this summer and my plant was outside on my porch. It actually flowered this year only being watered once the entire summer.

Well it certainly helps to live in San Diego with average humidity of 70%! Not hating, their collection is great, just saying that they could literally plant those in their yard and it would grow up happy and healthy. Thanks for sharing

Glad this is out there: I tell people to water Adansonii like a succulent and they look at me like I am crazy. Mine is thriving and theirs dies every time they try, but I am crazy? Lol.

In relation to the comment on how often they water the plants, considering that the pots are huge in comparison to the root system it does make sense that watering is so scarce.
That’s my thinking as well!
I never got the logic of using bark for a more well draining soil mix either. That stuff rots like crazy. I use cactus sand-mix with regular soil for indoor plants for philodendron and they all love it.
I'm not really sure it's a logic issue; it's probably more due to lack of information and experience.
My variegated adansonii has given me SO much anxiety because I paid a lot for such a tiny specimen....its growing but the top two leaves are all green so I fear its reverted....I'm gonna try to cut it back in the summer to see if I can recoup any variegation....I only have about 2 nodes to work with and I cant tell if either of them are any good...my husband is frustrated because I put us in a bind getting it, definitely cant get another one anytime soon if it doesn't work out. This video helped relieve some of my anxiety and guilt....hard to find good advice on specifically this plant. Thank you 🙂
Definitely make sure the roots are well established before you cut back. Also, you may want to start air rooting / air layering now so that your top cutting will be easier to root later on after you cut it in the summer. Cheers!
Came for the advice...of course now in 2024 post prices dipping... I wish the ones I have now are worth this then lol... super well draining is a biggie...almost killed my aurea version...also bought from 2 different suppliers...and this at least for me has been the lowest maintenance rare plant I have ever owned... from growth to propogatting
