About Ronald Kanne
Ronald is a wood turner in the Netherlands. He makes commissioned work and his own free work. And every week turns out to be a little too short to get all the work done... He also runs a webshop for other wood turners. It's called: www.dehoutdraaierij.nl. This webshop is in Dutch, English and German. The website that contains his own work is called www.ronaldkanne.nl. Ronald, You MUST bring your photographer into one of your tutorials. She is a HOOT!!
BTW: I would rather watch your videos than go to the theater to watch a Hollywood movie. Watching your channel, I can laugh, while learning something valuable for my woodturning hobby! Keep up the valuable and entertaining videos!!!
Thank you Roger! We will!
Love the dialogue going on with the off camera audience. Really enjoyed the presentation and the result. Thanks for sharing
As we say when crocheting, it is the imperfections that show it is made by hand and not a robot. Great job.
But if i had picked the right type of drill it would still have been handmade and looking better.. 😊
@@ronaldkanne Perhaps, but I still think it looked Great.
What an interesting video & I love the end result. When you are sanding, you finish off with some 'pads'. I am wondering what they are exactly. Again I love your relaxed commentary & I love the banter that goes on between you & the lady doing the video work. It makes a great contribution to the end product. Cheers, Don from South Australia.
I believe your camera wife is digging a whole for herself,my wife also like IKEA I’ve lost all hope for her 😂
Hahaha! No she's still here!
Out of all the woodturning videos watched, I have to say that Ronald and his lovely cam girl bring a great sense of humour for my entertainment. Not to mention the unique approach to the craft.
Thanks Will
I just found your channel tonight & you bring a fresh approach which had me hooked from the start, so "I'll Be Back" ....... top marks to your camera "Person" & your dog looks as chilled out as mine.
That's a great bowl. And a very entertaining and enjoyable presentation.
Well thank you!
Aha. So you turned the ARS into a square bowl! ARS? The Armpit Refreshment System! Thanks again Ronald & Lies. It is always fun to watch your videos and beside that, very educational as well! Take care, stay safe.
no worries... I'm back to the deodorant... :-)
haha she's so funny
love your explaning on the turning aswell. thank u
Beautiful! I am so jealous sitting here with my mini lathe watching you with that massive lathe!
But you can do this on a small lathe as well! :-)
Well I will definitely try. I just worry that it will be too unstable and will knock my lathe off the table.
Think I’ve found a new favourite channel, really informative and humerus, and full of chemistry between both of you. 👍👍👍
Thank you! Nice to hear!
I am definitely waiting for a class to become available! Love this
That will probably be the bowl course Christine, but a square bowl is not in it... 😅
Great camera work Ronald
Thank you Andrew! I'll pass it on to Lies.
Nice one. I love the relaxed vibe you guys have.
1 guy and 1 gal Ruben... just sayin' :-)
That’s cool, Ronald!
Thank you Rick!
Fun watch!
The “Drying of the Pits” got You a Subscriber 😂
Hahaha! That's a weird reason for subscribing... 😀
I wish my wife enjoyed watching me work on the lathe half as much as yours does 😂. Beautiful work.
My wife actually never watches me turning... the lady you hear (Lies) is not my wife...🙂
@@ronaldkanne oops lol. I guess there is no hope in my case.
Nicely turned. Nicely produced, except I don't much care for the music. I like hearing your commentary and the sound of the lathe is music enough. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
Wow. Very unique approach.
thank you Mark
Very cool. I made a large square platter recently, took a lot of concentration and tool control to do the wings, but a great learning experience. Thanks for sharing Ronald.
That’s the most informative and entertaining and useful 25 minutes I’ve had in a very long time …. Thank You!
That is very kind of you to say calabogie! Thanks
Well done
Een leuke leerzame video.
Dank je wel.
Always enjoy yalls videos.
What a unique concept. I want to try it. Thanks for sharing
Just found your channel, Subscription button smacked.
Nice, very nice. Another project to add to my list.
Looking forward to 2nd June
Me too!
Great video, liked the commentary
I will pass it on to Lies, Gary! 👍
Kool project
Just found you! I like your show. 👍
Amazing, keep it going! Thank you
Ronald I’ve just found your channel, matey your a joy to watch I’ve subbed and can’t wait to catch up on your videos. I cant believe you only have 5.7 subscribers so far the whole production comes across as if you have been doing videos for years ❤
Beautiful!! I gotta try that!! Thanks for sharing. 👍🏽
Superb enjoyed that !
Hi, great video and not seen this done before, I'll give it a try, good to try somthing new. Just before watching this I had my dinner, tasted great with salt from salt shaker I turned from your design/video. Keep up the great work.
Thanks Nick, for your kind words!
Lovely work
This was excellent!
Thank you Billy!
Enjoy watching your relaxed, easy going and skillful turning style. BRD
It may not be precise by your standard but I think it looks GREAT. 😀😀. Jim's wood ahop.
Very nicely explained. Beautiful bowl 👍👍👍👍
Thank you Jack!
Absolutely love it I am going to have a go at the square bowl
Good Luck!
Love your format keeped my attention all the way to the end with out my attention waving as in some other videos will be using your channel to help me with my turning as I've recently got give an old lathe.
Thank you Pat! That's a great compliment!
Great video. I have not seen this technique before. I will definitely be making this one. Thank you.
And? done one already?
Like your work
Thank you!
Wow , geweldig !!
Dank je Ria...
Full disclosure, I don't even own a lathe yet, but I'm hoping some of my machinist experience comes through. When you punched the center to drill for the screw you used a Brad tip drill bit. The Brad tip may have been off a bit as it was not fully engaged in the wood. Also the outside edge of the drill bit could cause some ' walking'. If using a Brad tip, I would use it to it's full Capacity and not punch a hole.
Love your work. First time view. Thanks
Like the presentation style really cool.
Good job
Thank you!
Leuke video en mooie techniek! Ga ik stiekem ook eens proberen...🙂
Mooi! succes Bas!
Hi Ronald, just found and subscribed to your channel. What a refreshing approach you have to wood turning. Ideas are innovative and videos are informative. I'll certainly be copying this idea if that's OK. Thank you.
Sure! Go ahead Bryan!
Awesome! Would've liked to see a finish on there, tho. Always the most rewarding part, isn't it?
but i'd use no visible oil then. So you don't see a finish... :-) dehoutdraaierij.nl/shop/afwerken/no-visible-oil/
@@ronaldkanne Touché :D
Que hermoso trabajo
Vivo en Colombia soy de Colombia y tengo un pequeño torno artesanal soy fanático de esa técnica
Great video Ronald! What kind of wood did you use, ash?
Tnx Corien, the wood is called Kiefer, German Pine I think Pinus sylvestris if you want to do a search... Smells like the Ikea... :-)
What a great doube act! Not only a good instructional video but also very entertaining. Who should get the greatest accolade? The one in front of the camera or the one behind?
The one behind... the bowl is in her kitchen now...🙂
Nicely done. Tom Fronapfel
everything about this video is first class. What kind of wood is that?
Thank you Andy! I don't know the woodspecies... it is some sort of ceder/conifer..
I really enjoyed the video. Like others, I will have to try it. In the states, a lot of people will put a paper bag between the glue pieces for easy separation. Don't know if that would be good for you or not. I also subscribed to your channel.
Thank you for subscribing Joseph!
Hi Joseph, a piece of paper will do the job as wel. You can spilt it wth a chisel then. I glued it up the day before so I knew for 100% sure that it would not split while turning. Because I have a bandsaw it is no problem for me to divide the piece in two but, more important, Lies is much of the time in the "wood flying zone" with her camera...
Hello Ronald, I love your videos. Very instructive and fun to watch.
What is your "large thing"?
Is a forestry caliper?
Thank you David! It is a forestry caliper indeed..
@@ronaldkanne I'm on a mission to make a set of these. I very rarely buy turning stock, but may have to as it would require kiln dried wood. I've found a shop on Etsy that sells 6x6x3 inch kiln dried blanks. And I ordered an inexpensive big thing!
@@depropst go for it! 👍
I have learned lots from this video. I think part of the key is the long jaw calipers. Where did you get these from? Does the block of wood have to be a cube before turning?
Hi Cheryl, you can get these long calipers in a shop for forestry.... (They measure trees with it...)
Thank you for the information. I love the extra added conversation between you and your wife.
Hello, I think I just found a new turning channel to add to my favorites! Nice Robust lathe also. How to you like it?
Hi David. Very happy with the Robust. Especially the tilt away, as i do a lot of hollowing...
Hi. great workflow. Do you have experience with a paper glue up for this bowl? Is it strong enough that things not fly apparat?
Hi Gunther, yes. You can do this with the paper glue up methode as well...
Grtz
muito bom mesmo um abraço parabéns e mais um inscrito naf naf nenem
I imagine it would be much more difficult to make it square on the inside as well (in the same sense as it is square on the outside). How would one even do that apart from using a cnc?
Where did you get that hose for the dust collector ?
I sell these... search for loc-line. I'm sure the're sold in your neighbourhood to...
Ronald what were the starting dimensions of each bowl blank ?
Hi Cecil, the dimensions were app. 15 x 15 x 8 cm that is 5/8 x 5/8 x 3 1/16 inch... Are you going to make one? Good!
excuse me... 6 x 6 x 3 1/16 inch
@@ronaldkanne Thanks.. i will attempt to turn a square bowl..
🥰
Interesting music?
I loved your presentation . What timber did you use , red pine , spruce , fir ? What does it look like with finish ? I wear a nice pair of wrap around , bi - focal safety glasses . An old industrial arts professor told our class that steel bits can be removed be the Trauma doctors with a magnet , but wood shards require a knife and forceps , be safe , and may the grain be with you
Thank you Gary. I will remember the professors words, but i won't start working with metal because of the easier to remove shards...🙂... i don't know the exact type of wood unfortunately...
No face shield?
Oh yes, I have several... and wear them often..
been there done that
I prefer it to be square inside too - not round.
How do you do that on a lathe?
"...the sound..."
What about the sound? Nice? 🙂
@@ronaldkanne "the sound" when you first turn on the lathe 1:35 to 1:42. I bookmarked your video...but I will make a smaller bowl first, in case I screw up. Ronald: thanks for the inspiration!
bamm 1k
Ah "Lies", you photographer. Yep, you and your "Big Thing" (calipers, I assume?)
Hi. I just subscribed. CU L8R
Thank you very much!
I made it with Woodglut plans!
Beautiful piece's. I got myself a lathe but nowhere to set up shop. We have a shop room in our building but the landlords won't let us use it. We all live on a budget and they're charging us for parking gardening and large items that we put in the huge garbage bin. So I am thinking that these so called christian landlords haven't figured out how much to charge for the use of the workshop. I got it because they were talking about opening it up and I wanted to start making walking sticks.
Hey George, I hope for you that you'll have a place to turn soon! All.the best!
Looks like a rectangle not a square.
COMB YOUR HAIR!!!
Hi Wilton, Thank you for sympathizing so deeply with my hairstyle. I immediately admit that combing my hair hasn't really been at the top of my priority list for the last 35 years. I clearly put less effort into it than, for example, making a video. In order not to test your peace of mind too much in the coming days, I can also report that 3 days after we recorded the video I went to the hairdresser again. The hair has been washed a number of times since, but unfortunately still not combed. Sorry... :-)
Great video, liked the commentary
