  • The Quietdale mansion was designed and built over 160 years ago by my great great great grandparents, William and Caroline Robinson. The plantation house and slave quarters survived the Civil War and beyond, although time has taken its toll on this historic treasure. Many cherished structures of the Civil War era survived the because Huntsville capitulated so early to Union forces.
William Robinson died of a stroke at age 43, just days before construction was to begin. Caroline persevered (with 5 children!) and the house was completed in 1854. Most of the skilled laborers and craftsmen on the job were the slaves themselves, for William taught them well. Hopefully, he treated them well, too. Caroline never remarried and continued to live at Quietdale until her death in 1885.
The slave quarters are positioned at a right angle just behind the main house. During the space race of the 1960's, housing was so tight from large numbers of NASA personnel moving to Huntsville, the slave quarters were converted into apartments for a time.

I have been researching my family history. I am the great great granddaughter of Benjamin Moore, a slave that worked for your great, great, great grandparents, William and Caroline Robinson. Caroline sent my great great grandfather to the Civil War because she did not want to send any of her sons. I know she had 5 children. Two of the sons never married. The Robinsons own several plantations in the south. Records show that they owned at least 93 slaves and they leased numerous other slaves to work at other plantations. Ben's parents were slaves as well. There names were Archie and Letta or {Lettie} Moore as she is affectionately known to my family. I would like to know if your family have any records, letters, family bibles, or stories that may have been passed down. Ben never learned to read or write. He lived to be 98 years of age. This means he not only survived slavery, reconstruction, Jim Crow, etc.; he manage to marry and had 11 children with one woman, his wife, Isabelle Lee. He lived to own his on farm and raised his family on that farm in Tennessee. There are 2 stories about how Ben got to Tennessee. Some say he had beaten a white man that was abusing his mother and ran away to escape the men who wish to punish him. Some say his father told him to run North. I believe there is a bit of truth in both explanations. Ben is buried at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Bradley County, Tennessee. Many of my family members are also buried there. A memorial service was done in recent years by the 900 Chapter Daughters of the Confederacy. There is documentation that he was sent to the Civil War and his assignment of service was as a cook. I noticed that you did not leave a name. Posterboyz, if you are his real descendant, please respond accordingly. I would like very much to hear from you. Sincerely, L. Ware( email ledonnaw1@yahoo.com)
