Without JLo and Christian we would haven't discover the truth how beauty Selena Quintanilla was. Just like Elvis movie, Aretha movie, we need the actress or actor who represent the memory about their life and their music that has given to all of us. JLo and Christian pay the tribute to Selena, not replace or copy Selena.
There actually was a person that was auditioning that did look extremely close to Selena. Her father wanted that woman to play her in the movie, but she had no acting experience whatsoever. J Lo and Christian both did a good job.

She didn’t make Selena look bad. She just looked nothing like her. She presented kind of a different person and it was more like she was trying to play Jlo. Idk but i enjoyed the series and she was a good actress
Is not her fault. She did amazing and is great at acting. Nobody could get close to being the same as Selena. She is the one and only. But the actress receiving hate for not looking or acting the same is kind of ridiculous. Not everything is about looks. Is about the story and its meaning

I think she did a fabulous job portraying Selena and I really think the series goes more info depth of what they went through as family to arrive where they were. The series is to introduce Selena to a whole new generation of people. But I also love the movie Selena as well and J-Lo did an incredible job portraying Selena as well.

It doesn't seem like she really tried to emulate Selena's personality or the way she spoke. It just seems like she's reading lines in her own personality relying totally on the outfits to make people see her as Selena. I don't even think JLo is a very good actress but I know she put in the work on Selena, even living with Selena's actual family to study everything about their lives and who she was and how she acted. I was excited for the series so it's not as if i'm just biased against anything new because I like the movie. I just don't think they did her justice.
Suzette said back then there was no CZcams or Google for actors to look them up and study them. The movie actors had to meet the real people and live with them in order to study them. The family had to show Jennifer home videos and concerts of Selena to educate her. Again none of these videos were available to the public yet at the time. There was no Internet platforms yet for people to see them.
She also said in 2020 Christian has the luxury of just doing a simple Google search on her phone to watch Selena. So essentially Jennifer and Christian studied for Selena the same way! It’s just Jennifer had to watch VHS tapes and Christian had her smart phone 😂
Now for my opinion I feel Christian did capture Selena much more accurately. She got her goofy personality down, how humble she was and how Selena as a teen was not outspoken. She was pretty timid and quite according to her family.. Jennifer Lopez on the other hand was acting like herself in Selena I feel. She didn’t even do the southern accent! Also a lot of the personalities in the movie are inaccurate to the real people and the movie actors met and LIVED with them. Which now to me seems like a direction issue by the movies production. Typical gringo Hollywood making a Latina movie type of move. For example the character of Marcella. Marcella in the movie was that of Hollywood probably directing the actress to be a “spicy Latina”. In the movie she was fiery, demanding, strong and everytime Abraham was angry she met him as his level.. Which is not how Marcella is in real life at all. The series portrayed her much more accurately. She was an observer type. She was very selective with her words and every time Abraham was angry she was the ice that cooled him down. She was the voice of reason but never demanding or in your face about what she had to say. This is just one of many things I noticed the series got right vs the movie. Which goes to show you don’t need to meet the real people to get an accurate portrayal. Suzette probably learned that from doing the movie

The plot of the series was good. But the acting and wigs were actually offensive. Christina barely even tried to lips ink correctly or dance like her. She looks nothing like her she doesn’t even tried to get Selena’s Tex mex accent.

And to make it known Jlo was known in Hollywood while Selena wasn’t, they chose Jlo for the movie due to acting and dancing skills resembling Selena but also they needed an known actress to spark interest for the film. After Jlo got recognized as first Latina to get paid 1 mill for a role and Selena name got popular afterwards

I heard selena's dad said jlo wasn't the first option because there was this fangirl of selena who audition for the role she got selena's performing skills and mannerism she look so much like selena too it was so uncanny you would've thought she was selena in a blink of an eye but they casted jlo cuz she knows how to act like c'mon we all know what you did there sadly the girl also been murderer by her own boyfriend which is find eerie
