I had a total ankle replacement a year ago, I broke my ankle in the 70's, it was a severe brake, in a cast for 18 weeks, healed well until arthritis settled in a number of years later!! I was unable to walk in the grass, or snow it had to be on a even surface!! The pain was quite severe and was unable to walk correctly, I even loss my calf muscle!! After surgery I'm now able to walk on any types of surfaces, I get pain when I'm on my feet for long periods, I keep trying different types of shoes, dosen't help much, but if I walk bare footed I have no pain, going to have a talk with my surgeon!!!!

Due to a structural deformity (tibia meeting talus at the wrong angle) I had a TAR 4 weeks ago on my right ankle. Fortunately, I had Dr. Schuberth (Kaiser, San Francisco) who's done a ton of these and has a high success rate (in the 90's). After being non-weight bearing for 2 weeks, I got a weight bearing cast and slowly began putting weight on it. One month later, I can walk! It's stiff, and my gait will take some work, but, I can walk! Incidentally, mine is the Paragon 28. I do need to have the other one replaced as well.

Very painfull and difficult so far after the first 4 months. They cut the nerve becasue the blade went too far and damage my tandon. Also, during the surgery shattered the modial Malleolus. The x-ray after 3 months shows that. Now! I have so much pain and swellings. So this surgery is not that easy and you should be preperd for it. My implant brand name was " Hintermann Series H3 TAR" wich have a age front of Tibia where exatly you big toe's nerves traped under this age to of tibia. I see so many comments here which they don't have much cloue like me before surgery. Do not do this surgery except there is no other option left. This is my opinion after 4 months. Please if someone already down this before me with the same brand, leave me a reply. My doctor said I would never get motion like my other ankle. why all this risks are being told after the surgery. Do you home work and learn about whtn is the brand of the implant and go to that webesite and see what are the risk of nerve damage or fractures and everything else.

Any surgery is a gamble, and results will vary from patient to patient. I have had two ankle surgeries in the last year, and fusion/replacement are possible down the road, but my surgeon has already made me well aware it's a last ditch effort when you go down that road. Unless your ankle is so bad and causing extreme pain and basically preventing you from walking, then yes it makes sense to do TAR. Theres mo way a foot and ankle specialist should be telling you it's the best option and things will get way better... it's basically for pain relief so you can do things like walk for 30 mins without major discomfort. You're sacrificing overall mobility in your ankle to reduce pain basically. So that's why I'm gunna need to be in some agonizing cant function pain before going for the next step
