Sounds like the investigation involved teasing out a lot of disparate information and weaving it into one cohesive set of evidence that lead to their suspect. Impressive but time consuming work no doubt.
Because they kill themselves to not have to admit that liberals are violent. It goes against their "Church going Conservative Christians are the real violent people in this country" narrative.

Alternatively, they had a brief involvement and he couldn't take the rejection which threw him in a rage to want to kill her with multiple gun shots. The 15 or so multiple shots tells me it was deeply personal but it will be interesting to find out his motive.
