Sandhill Crane Nest - One Day After First Colt Hatches

  • Egads! Yesterday I was able to video the first egg hatching from a Sandhill Crane Nest. Overnight .45 inches of rain fell, then it rained/sleeted/snowed throughout the area today adding another .88 inches. To add misery, the air temperature dropped to 34F degrees during the heavy precip. event. This was a tough day for the Sandhill Cranes. Not only did they have to contend with unseasonably cold temperatures, they had to deal with rising flood waters. As you can see in these two segments, the waters continued to rise throughout the day. The second egg has a pip in it, but has yet to hatch. Will the nest survive the night? Hard to know for sure.

This is what we should be using internet for, I think that the way the big bird juggles the chick and egg, so funny when she puts baby flat on its back then lies down on egg and chick, thanks for bringing this to Scotland, one amused-and amazed at same time 💕

I can't believe no one else is commented on that Crane's parenting! Between 0:40 and 0:41 that mom (or dad) steps on the baby's neck and keeps her foot like that for almost 10 seconds before lifting it whereupon the young Crane leaps up with so much force it flops on its back and mom (or dad as it may be) plunks down on top of the bellied up little Crane without giving it a chance to right itself! Finally finally at 5:05 the parent bird manages to settle down so the egg is directly underneath her body and the baby is tucked under her wing and stays like that so must have sensed the arrangement was now proper. Glad baby didn't die in the process!

Wikipedia - The average weight of the larger males is 4.57 kg (10.1 lb), while the average weight of females is 4.02 kg (8.9 lb), with a range of 2.7 to 6.7 kg (6.0 to 14.8 lb) across the subspecies. Sandhill cranes have red foreheads, white cheeks and long, dark, pointed bills.

Wonderfully well shot video! I don't know much about cranes, but that seems a VERY risky place to build a nest, with newborn chicks tumbling around the way they do it must result in chicks rolling off the nest into the water. Are crane chicks able to swim right after birth like ducklings and cygnets are?
