  • The Profumo affair is the scandal that has everything: sex parties in high places, Soviet agents, political resignations, dramatic court cases, drugs, deaths, cover ups and endless tabloid excitement, all at a critical moment in the Cold War and when, in London, the sixties are beginning to swing.
But after so many years how much is here still to learn about the tangled relationships between John Profumo, Christine Keeler, Stephen Ward, Mandy Rice-Davies and Yevgeny Ivanov? And were other very highly placed men protected by an Inquiry so opaque that key documents are still kept under lock and key and will be for many decades to come?
Our guest Stephen Dorril has written The Secret Worlds of Stephen Ward: Sex, Scandal and Deadly Secrets in the Profumo Affair (with Anthony Summers), and is author of MI6: Fifty years of Special Operations, which remains the definitive account of the UK’s post-war secret intelligence service.

So interesting! As a young child, I remember the raised eyebrows and gasps at the breakfast table when the Profumo scandal hit the front pages. We lived near Cliveden, so it felt that it was all happening on our very doorstep!

he was PP's osteopath...PP had a lot of explaining to do to the queen, when some wanted to frame him(sketch and photo of him)...was the Crown's portrayal of him acceptable? Do you think Lord Snowden was involved with that circle, too?

The only thing I'm shocked about is the cover up. Wonder if ever a device will be invented that will allow us to listen into the past, downloaded from the cosmos? My parents took The Express back then with it's black and white coverage matching what was on our black and white TV. I came nose to nose with Jeremy Thorpe in the 1970s as he was leaving an event in the town where I lived; he turned right into me, no bodyguards around him. He was exquisitely handsome, well dressed, suave, and within a year all his scandal erupted. The whole invention of LSD, it's original use is it's own scandal. Interesting show guys, thank you.

Susie Chang is famous in America for her involvement with John Lennon's blurry drug time in LA during his break up with Yoko Ono--great doc on this. FBI wanted John Lennon out of the US, so if he went out of the country, he couldn't get back in...so he was trapped in NYC

Poor Stephen Ward. He reminds me of George Brummell. They played similar roles, didn't they? And once they were seen as inconvenient instead of useful, they were dismissed. Brummell showed up at his club one evening and he was turned out. It was over. His loan was called in by the Duke of Beaufort and he had to flee to France with nothing.

I was just a thought floating in the ether when this took place but when I first heard of PROFUMO I thought it was a GREAT name for a new perfume. I was always a bit thick!😂
I am absolutely astounded that this isn't talked about a lot more!!!
I'm watching it twice as I find it mind boggling!

another great but depressing episode--bad guys don't always get their due.... and the wrong "guys" pay the price sometimes--as an old lady I should be used to this by now--yet, no.

After listening to the recast of this program, I’ve changed my mind. I was very young at the time and was lead to believe that they both had very successful futures. I guess that it doesn’t pay to be a young woman with no principles. You learn a lot from this program. I was a teenager at that time.

i don't think the party girls to be brought into the social circle were picked as randomly as all that. Ward was friends with horace roye and arthur ferriers who both had similar party set-ups in the decades prior because their work brought them into contact with beautiful women, their models. i think it goes back to 'darwin's dollies' which i can't find anything about but know was a thing - what to do with the result of wild oat sowing by the gentry. someone has been keeping track of these illegitimate family trees for generations now. the boys could be set up in 'trade' of course but the girls could be aligned to be theatre stars if talented, marriage or well kept mistresses and some less than that. a man called 'hooker' was friendly with darwin and that is a word used more often in america - for a prostitute. how did that word become widely used slang? ruth ellis's dad was a (incestuous paedophile) frequent transatlantic traveller as a cellist on a cruise ship so the trafficking potential was there. all the way up to the most recent 'outed' incarnation of it as epstein/maxwell scandal.

I remember the one fact about these English political scandals ( and they seemed to occur continuously). They were all supported by their long suffering wife as opposed to Donald Trump now…….his wife won’t go anywhere near him. ( and why should she ?)
