I grew up with my dad and I used feel guilty a lot because all the others kids on the block / apt didn’t have one. And you can feel that energy as a kid. I felt like I got hated on sometimes for having him or when he used to purchase me things and all the other kids just struggling. We struggled too in LA. Drug addictions and gang violence, poverty. That’s all we knew. I’m just happy he was there for me and taught me how to express my creativity and to think for myself. I just lost him last year. Life will never be the same. 🙏🏾

I got completely screwed on the lunches, two parents so didn't qualify for the free meals yet we were broke af so I had oxygen and disappointment for breakfast and lunch every day.

Thats how they pit the middle class and the class below the poverty line against each other. More income didn't mean you were rich, it just meant you could afford most of your own expenses. I had a two parent household as well and we didn't qualify and I used to be mad at the kids with less. The government needs to re-assess who gets free lunch. Because single moms have it bad and they need help, but the working/middle class is often one paycheck away from the same predicament... I wanted lunchables in a character lunchbox lol but I got a peanut butter sandwich in a balled up paper bag and the water fountain to quench my thirst instead 😂

That "safe neighborhood", nothing bad was really going to happen......you might get molested but there were 10 of us and you can't catch us all...... had me crying because I grew up in THAT neighborhood, with two parents!
After being woken up at 6:30......The first one who got done with ALL their Chores.....Started walking to gather the rest of the kids...... Once everyone was gathered it was 8-12 kids.....depending who couldn't come outside because they were on punishment!
The one child that did get molested.....is the one who didn't stay away from The Creepy Dudes House....The house where the Creepy Dude was always trying to get kids inside his house, by giving away king sized candy bars and having something to show them! The house your parentS told you to stay away from!

I try to tell people, my dad worked and my mom was home EVERYDAY, i never had the opportunity to do anything mischievous LMAO. As a 35 year old Black man...this is so relatable. All my friends grew up in the hood with no Father. Seemed like their lives were so much more fun. Hated it...today I'm so proud and glad my Father was there. It was 4 of us kids and we all have degrees and stable. Most of my friends are struggling.
It was the complete opposite with me. I was an only child and had a two parent household growing up but my pops was broke af and was one of the meanest depressing bastards I’ve ever known. Only thing I learned from dude is how to take a beating and to stay in my room when that fool got home from his piece of sh*t job and mad at the world because he grew up to be an average nobody.
Never learned anything from that piece of sh*t. Happiest day of my life when I finally moved out when I turned 17 before one of us ended up killing the other. Stayed with my granny til I could afford my own place and never looked back.
Having a positive motivational father in the house is important but a lot of fathers out here ain’t sh*t and are probably better off not being there.
Shit there are a lot of mothers that aren’t shit either.

My dad would take me on his snowplow jobs at the mall and other business centers. He would plow the parking lots and I would chip and salt the sidewalks. We would start all this around 4am, which means 2am wake up... And when I asked for payment, he would point to my clothes and ask how dinner was, then tell me I was "earning breakfast so hurry up." Also I was allowed out till the street lights too but I also had "If I call you and you don't hear me, you're too far." That shit sucked extra hard, big ass angry man snatching you out of your fantasy land, pissed cuz you were close and dazed, just not listening for him... No fucking joke.
