Thank you young lady this was very informative. I was going to give up on alcohol markers as a tool for urban sketching until i saw your lovely work and your suggestions. I am going to just take out the bright unnatural colours (yuk!) and just make a set of matching subtle colours and try to copy one of your sketches. Merci beaucoup 👏

Hello, Cecile! I do have an option for markering in sketchbooks that bleed. Being that one side of each page is being effected no matter what, I suggest drawing on one side of a page, then drawing the next picture on the back side of the next page. When you are done, both bleeding sides should be facing each other. Then adhere the two bleeding sides together. It will create a thicker page, but when you continue the rest of the book this way, you can have images filling what appear to be all the pages.
And, yes, I do use alcohol markers in my urban sketching, but only in sketchbooks because it will fade after a time. Markers were generally meant mainly for temporary work that would be scanned/photographed, but when kept from the light it reduces the time of them changing and fading. I come from the 'old school' of marker rendered layouts (back in the 80s), when markers were only used for an ad layout... not for actual art. Although I always loved working with them (and had my share of "marker highs" from all the fumes-they've certainly changed the composition of them since then!). The markers of 40 years ago also used to transfer onto other pages if a drawing was compressed for a length of time against another paper, as I've witnessed from old layouts I kept in my portfolio. The plastic sleeves show yellowing from the images against them after all these years. Again, being a different composition to the "marker juice" these days, I have yet to see if newer drawings will do that as well over time.
Coming into "semi-retirement" and finally digging into fine arts again, I've been pleasantly surprised to see markers being used in actual art. However, some of my urban sketch works have been commissioned for framing and hanging, so I've had to mimic the look of marker with a flat paintbrush and water color, as marker will not stand up to light. The look ends up very similar!

Thank you for your message. I guess I could glue the pages, that would be a way to use my thiner sketchbooks.

I have not tried using alcohol markers for urban sketching here. It gets extremely hot in the summertime so I would probably use them in the spring 🍃 or autumn 🍂. That new sketchbook sounds like a great idea for alcohol markers. Thanks for sharing this wonderful information! Have a great day!

I just got a small set of Faber Castell Pitt Artist Dual pens. They are India ink and don’t bleed through.

Any kind of cartridge or other heavy paper is going to drain your markers dry in no time and bleed through. When I was an advertising visualiser/storyboard artist we used to use cheap layout pads. Bleed-proof layout pads obvs solve the bleed through problem but they also produce much more vivid colours. We also used regular layout pads with a sheet of tracing paper behind to prevent bleed.

Thank you! And yes Clairefontaine is poorly distributed in the US, it's a shame as they have really good products.
