  • The third of five videos from a fabulous birding trip to Ecuador in late May and June 2016. For this part of the trip we were guided by Jonas Nilsson and visited various elevations down the east slope of the Andes, including time spent at Guango Lodge, Baeza, San Isidro Lodge, Guacamayos and Jonas's own Wildsumaco Lodge.

Wonderful video. Well filmed, no irritating background music, naming of the birds and not least a good narrator

Guango (pronounced Gwahn-go) is truly a wonderful place. Great hummingbirds, including guaranteed Swordbilled. I love seeing the male Collared Inca sitting in a shady spot with that bright white throat or when it fights another humor at a feeder and spreads its white tail. The Tyrian Metaltail has a brilliant purple underside to the tail, but it is hard to see without properly placed flashes. Then there are the two bullies, the coronets. Food is great, as this lodge is owned by the Bustamantes, who also own Cabanas San Isidro, and Carmen is a fabulous cook.

Great job! I will be staying at the three lodges you featured here. You also showed a zoo near San Isidro but no much footage- is it worth going to?

A strange little place but yes it’s worth visiting, the woodland areas in particular.

It is Andrew. A visit to both slopes and the Amazon is one of the great birding trips.

Great videos, i just found your channel yesterday. Did you ever figure out a definitive id on that owl?

As far as I know there has been no definitive decision on the taxonomy of the San Isidro Owl, although it generally seems to be considered a type of Black-banded Owl. That doesn’t seem quite right however so we’ll have to wait for now.
